From how I have seen it form in transverse and longitudinal installations I have the feeling it is something to do with the shape and cooling of the sump. The sludge forms on the shallow rear area which isn't always covered with oit and on the transverse engines it forms on the sides above the oil level. The number of 1.8T's in the transverse application vastly outnumbered the longitudinal which seemed to have a disproportionate failure rate. The VEP Diesel 3B Passat was the last of the great VW's and would easily do half a million if cared for, the AFN engine is a legend. The PD engines signaled the end of the best and when the 3C came out in 06, what a pile of shit that was!
