I was not very careful selecting my latest used car.

My 5N Tiguan has the 5N1 909 144 R rack, which was manufactured by VW itself (APA BS) and not ZF. This doesn't work so well with OpenPiot I know now. Right now it's nagging me about the J759 camera missing, even if I add that cam it will stop steering after 6 minutes, so it's sub-optimal.

Instead adding a used camera, I thought about "just" swapping the steering rack to a 1K0 909 144 R. They come with B6 Passat and Golf 6.

Sebastian put it nicely: ZF and APA are not considered to be interchangable, though I have seen it done.

So I would like to do it as well.

Do you think it's going to work?? Are they mechanically identical?

Bonus question: Can I just replace the motor and logic? (That would be the cheapest solution since getting those racks in Brazil is very expensive, the motor I can probably bring in my luggage.)

Any vehicle using openpilot without factory Lane Assist will have an intermittent DTC in the rack for no-comms/missing-message, because openpilot isn't always running. It shouldn't have any effect visible to the driver. Don't replace your EPS just for that.

The six minute timer is annoying, especially if you don't have a rack that can have it patched out, but I have a software-only mitigation in openpilot that seems to work reasonably well. It's on my to-do list to clean up and upstream to comma.
