As some of you may recall, I was whining late last year about lower than desired AC output, but due to the inexplicable CP events that I have seen during the last 5 years of owning the vehicle, I was distracted, and didn't for a second expect a problem, so no diagnostics took place.
(see previous discussion - Component Protection - Potential Controller Software\Firmware issue )

Now that we are finally getting some warmth in my neck of the woods, it's evident that there's a more substantial issue with the system.
Bottom line is, my AC compressor doesn't kick in.

I have also physically checked with my hand on the compressor when the AC button is cycled on and off that it doesn't engage.
Right now, my speculation is that the N280 valve in the compressor is stuck.... this is based on the compressor not kicking in, the pressure not dropping, the evaporator temp not changing, and obviously the AC output not being any colder than ambient temps.

Output test was ran and passed on the rad coolant fan, so that's not an issue.
Output test of the compressor activation was refused by the controller.


I'm done poking around this for tonight, so if anyone wants to throw out some ideas, I'm eager to read them.

Huh.... so apparently, while "going to school" regarding modern automotive A/C repair/maintenance/procedures, there appears to be some "drier" filter in these condensers.... :eek:
Need to do some digging around, to try to figure out what kind of a "life expectancy" these have....

Once the system is opened. Moisture comes in and saturates the silica or whatever is inside them. If filter gets blocked, it becomes very cold.

The only humidity sensor I can think of is the one at the base of the inside rear view mirror that's combined with the rain sensor..... I need to do some digging here.

Yeah, IDE01471-ENG98502 looks like bogus data (i.e. no sensor installed) to me.

It sounds like the compressor (or the N280 inside it) is faulty but I agree with this:

If filter gets blocked, it becomes very cold.

Most obstructions would present as an increase in high side pressure after compressor activation, reduction on the low side gauge, cold air may (or may not) start to blow and then the pressures would equalize followed by ambient air temps at the vents.

However, in some instance severe restrictions at the receiver/dryer or in-line orifice tube can act like a faulty compressor. After you have evacuated the system and applied a vacuum you find a section of line cold and sweating (wet from condensation) after 15 - 20 minutes. That type of behavior is not right at all but it happens when the recovery equipment was unable to get all of the refrigerant out due to the restriction.

I would not obsess over restriction possibility that as long as there wasn't ever any leak stop installed and the oil doesn't show signs of metal when you have it evacuated but it is a good idea to replace the dryer any time the system is opened up for compressor replacement. Since 7P0 898 191 was Dropped: 1 Jul 2014 and the Supersession is 7P0 898 191 A my guess is they had problems with those.

It's so weird that the compressor doesn't turn on, but the controller also refuses to run an output test on it..... This really makes it seem like there's some measurement or reading that causes the controller to block things.from happening.

Since there isn't an active compressor shut-down I think the old-school light bulb test may be best. I used the Bosch connector fuel injector Noid light for this but the same can be done using a standard light bulb. Peter makes reference to that here and most 168 / 194 bulbs can be modified to slip into those connectors.

Speaking of Output Tests, the next version of VCDS has an entirely re-worked SOT function for UDS protocol modules. For that reason you may want to wait a day or two and then grab the latest Release from this location so you can repeat testing:

I've been trying to find an opportunity to get to the N280 connector to put a meter on it, but its in a super awkward placement and I really don't want to pull the PS pump just to gain access to it. I may have to rip the wheel and wheel liner off in an attempt to access it from the wheel wheel opening since access from above is super limited.

Had a burst of motivation last night as the weather was decent, so I started crawling all over the engine bay for a bit.... got some picks out and struggled to attempt to unlock the N280 connector "by feel"... managed to get it off.
Checked signal with a meter... yup... gets power when A/C is activated.
I couldn't get sufficient access to check resistance on the N280, and hitting the contact pins blindly with the meter leads didn't work so well :banghead:
Checked again with VCDS... yup... it threw codes as I disconnected it and messed around with it.

Now, my new theory is that the N280 is actually stuck or it gets jammed while attempting to open.... this is based on the log that shows pressure barely building and compressor torque changing very little....

What's really awesome about all this is the fact that I am forced to deal with VW clowns now, as I don't have an A/C service station or the required equipment to properly evacuate and recharge the system.... I've already called a few local dealers trying to get them to quote me an evacuation and recharge, but they all refuse, and want me to pay them to diagnose the system prior to anything else.... so this means, I'm going to give them $200 just so that they can tell me that I need a new compressor (when I'm almost certain that I just need a new N280 which they don't sell, but I can source online). Even if I neglect the $200 gift to the dealer, I'm still in a pickle as I need the system evacuated so I can take off the PS pump in order to get sufficient access to the N280 valve to remove it out of the compressor, swap it out, then return to the same clowns to have the system recharged after more than likely having to pay another diagnostic fee first..... or I can just say "shut up and take my money" and let them replace the complete compressor at 10x the actual repair cost. :banghead:

So the way I'm interpreting IDE01288 is that the controller is not allowing the compressor to turn on due to not sensing enough refrigerant present... which also coincides with my theory that the N280 isn't opening up to allow said refrigerant to flow through the compressor, etc.

Why? Pretty much any reasonably equipped independent repair shop should have that, and it's not like they have to be knowledgeable about VWs or T'regs; the A/C system, particularly the refrigerant part of it isn't all that special.

I agree with Uwe and did some clicking around for independent shops in your area. I like the look of the google reviews on a family owned shop called: C S Automotive

I would try to find a place like that to do the evacuation. Since you don't want the system open for longer than necessary I would source the new N280 and have it on hand before having the system evacuated. That may allow you to have it discharged early in the day, return home for parts swapping and perhaps return the same day before the business closes so they can put it under vacuum and then recharge it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already located a shop that's on my "drive home" so I will stop by to check it out and talk to them today.
I think I'm going to roll the dice and simply pay for an evacuation\flush\recharge before I buy the new N280. I know it's risky, but I'm really trying to avoid driving the egg, even for short distances with the system evacuated as in my mind, this would also mean a loss of lubricity......

Interestingly enough, I need to really get in there to clearly see where the N280 is located on my compressor.... looking up the Denso part number that I believe I have, it appears that the N280 might be on the side of the compressor and may (I hope) be possibly removed while the compressor is still bolted up in there (I'm worried the frame rail will be right next to it)
