Hi all,
A generic question. Does anyone know where the black mask, that sits under the car in Areaview, comes from?
Is it the 6C module (it’s not the dataset) or 5F? Or somewhere else?

In this instance it’s a Passat B8.

Thanks

Mike

General VW/Audi Repair

For questions about repairs that do not involve a scan tool.

I would interpret that title as being directed toward "nuts and bolts" mechanical repairs. Modules/data/coding are clearly not that, hence the Auto-Scan.

Monitor this section, as it may get moved (???).

I had the thread moved. 👍🏼
As a generic question, does anyone have an understanding of this part of the Areaview system?

Hi, I don’t have a scan. It’s a general question which would be relevant to all models with Areaview. I’m just trying to see if anyone is familiar through experience, of the Areaview ‘mask’.

In the mean time, try to find someone with a Legitimate VCDS and Auto-scan your car (with these modules) ; the scan does not count against their (the owners) VIN count so no concern there. The scan is typically needed so someone here can look up the channels in it and see what can be done/seen/altered. That is best.

I suppose you could also search on this forum for someone with a vehicle as close as possible to your configuration (same MY, same SW, same HW...... same module etc.) and view their Auto-Scan and then link that info to your thread / question.

Be patient, as someone will comment or advise.

Hi. I posted in this section as a scan isn’t required. It’s just a generic question. Feel free to delete if not allowed.
There's very rarely a generic answer to a generic question as VW regularly make changes to electronics hardware and software which changes their behaviour and interactions, hence why we always need an Auto-Scan to offer meaningful advice.

Hi
Whilst I do agree in Principal, for this system I think it can be covered by a general understanding.

Having researched looking at other scans, two cars can have the same 6C module, coding and dataset, but have different masks.

Is the mask part of the vehicle graphics files in 5F of does it come from somewhere else like the BCM

A retrofit, for example, on a facelift car (albeit with discovermedia) has a much smaller mask.

So could be coming from the discover pro for example.

I just wondered if anyone in here had any experience of this.

@Mookistar

The answer does not change just because you will it to do so. No one can give you any specific technical information without knowing how your car is configured. As @PetrolDave said, VW changes their software all the time, even sometimes within the same model year and the same apparent hardware. We cannot and will not speculate on what may or may not be the source of your masking without the specifics of your car's hardware and software configuration.

Perhaps I’m not being clear. I’m not after specific advice. If I was asking how many legs a horse had I wouldn’t need to tell you the horses name or colour.
All I’m asking here is if anyone with an understanding of the Areaview system in general, and knows where it pulls the data for that mask from. I’m not asking where it pulls mine from specifically.

If no one has that experience of messing with this system and has come across the parameters or whatever impacts that box, fantastic. I’m not asking anyone to help me diagnose, just looking for a like minded soul who’s been down the same rabbit hole.

If that means I get no answers that’s cool

Thank you

Mike, this is a forum for vcds users (mostly). Please purchase a genuine one and who knows, maybe you will find what you’re after. (Be smart - read between the lines)

Understood. If anyone does know feel free to chip in. A scan won’t help so I’ll leave this for now.

BINGO!

Folks like that don't hang out here (not that that is a bad thing, it is just not how this membership operates ; "its all business, and that is what most folks come here for......answers), oh, there are some threads on here where the posts are 10-15 long and then finally at about the 20 count it surfaces that some information was withheld or not disclosed originally and the initial thread post could have been answered in 2 or 3 replies. (hence the up front Auto-Scan , even if you don't own the legit. VCDS - although most do) .

So wait... are you not posting a scan because of principle, or because you want help\input without having to actually be part of the "community".....
Asking for a friend....

I said at the opening. I don’t have a scan. if anything the community was exactly what I was looking to be part of, looking for insight and speculation as opposed to cold hard data.

As stefdds says, perhaps this isnt the place for that. No worries.

This community exists to offer support only for VCDS customers. That support is dependent on members owning VCDS, and posting a scan of the particular vehicle said member needs help with. Ross Tech run the community for their customers, and it's their rules.

If you can find a local person or garage who'll do a scan for you and you then post it here, that gives your particular query some credence and allows some understanding of how your issue might be addressed.
