Audi A6 C7 4G 02850 J770 fault code

On my Audi A7 A6 C7 I received an error some time back saying "ACC and braking guard not available" and "audi side assist system fault" After checking with vcds a long time ago we found out that the part that needs to be changed is 02850 J770 slave module in the left side rear bumper. I know the code for the slave module, but seems like the reason we cant get the code to appear is because it has no signal/communication with the master. I've also read that when changing the slave module, you will be left with error 005 instead of 004, which is probably when you have to calibrate the slave module with the master to make it work, do you think it matters if I purchase a used or completely new module?

Have you checked the wiring and connections? "No Signal/Communication" is a pretty clear indication of what the issue is - your car can't talk to that replacement module. Maybe it doesn't have power or ground, maybe the data line(s) aren't connected properly, or maybe your replacement module is no good. Only way to be sure is to break out a multimeter, get the wiring diagram (that's a clickable link...), and start probing.

And yes, it definitely matters that you bought a used module. You have no idea what condition that module was in prior to your purchase, and I have my doubts that the seller offered a warranty on it.

Me and my friend decided to disable the module yesterday and found some interesting things, and I think we found the problem there tbh. If you look at the imgur link, there is 4 images showing you how it looks inside, and it doesn't look good at all, from what we saw before opening it, it was already a tiny bit open around the edges which is shown in 1 of the images. I assume this is the reason for the fault code, not to say, it could be issues with the wiring system also, but will have to look at replacing this module first, then see what happens. I also talked to a guy who works at Norbit, who works with things like this, and he might be able to repair it, but will have to see what he says when I show him the module.

You are very right regarding an used module, we probably have no idea what condition it is, but if it seems to be closed on the edges, it should be fine inside I assume? It actually has a 3 month warranty, its pretty big market here in Norway at least, that covers all the scrap companies on a website that offers warranty and other things. But in terms of a replacement module, what do you recommend? Because buying a used or new, it seems the price is pretty much the same, this is due to Norway being expensive, can get a used slave module for 130-200EUR, but it's also an option to purchase a new for 150EUR at AUTODOC. My only concern is doing the wrong thing, because what I've learned from posting on some audi facebook groups and talking to some mechanics that screws a lot of VW, is that I will either need to get 1 module and calibrate it, or I'll need to buy a set of 2 used modules from same car and then it shouldn't be needed to calibrate at all, just remove the fault code. Another person said there is a component lock on used modules too, which requires you to visit audi workshop I think, but the other person who told me to buy 2 used or calibrate 1, said that this is wrong, there is no component lock on these modules, but he said its component lock on the radars in the front, none of them have mentioned me buying a new one yet. Perhaps it requires a lot more work due to the fact its never been in a car? This makes me very confused and I'm stuck with not knowing what to do.

Highly appreciate any intel on this if you know, or anyone else who reads this!

That is one crunchy looking module! :eek:

I wouldn't trust AUTODOC to sell a genuine part, especially if it's similar to used part prices. Definitely check with the dealer for a new one, or at least try to find one from a reputable parts supplier.

A relatively quick Google search says the "D" revision part has been discontinued, superseded by an "M" revision. 4G0907568M I have no idea if it's compatible with your "D" revision master module or if you'd have to replace the master as well, but I highly recommend a new part instead of continuing to roll the dice on used. You will probably have to deal with component protection either way, so be prepared to visit the dealer once you get a functioning module installed.

I am not sure what experience you have with AUTODOC, but they don't sell non-original parts when it says "hella" as a manufacturer, but they buy them in very large quantities to get them cheap, they wouldn't have been able to run a business for a long time if they had sold non-volatile branded parts. I can always ask the dealer, but Audi dealership is also known to be one of the most expensive branded dealership, especially in Norway. One example is getting 2x injectors was somewhere around 5500EUR, meanwhile getting 2 at AUTODOC was around 900EUR. I did read on a forum that someone got a set of these j769 & j770 and it was insanely expensive, but I'll look into it and make a decision soon.

That I have no idea about, but I am able to purchase both the master and slave D version as new and used. I could call the dealership and ask them what they think, but one problem I find with dealership, at least Audi, and that's with experience from many friends, is that their service is pretty lame, they rarely want to help, unless you get an appointment. I have experienced this a few time myself, that day I called a different dealership and ended up talking with a very nice guy who was very helpful, but I never got his name, so will be hard to locate him again. Most of the times they don't even want to give you an estimated price either, I'm sure there is other branded dealerships out there that do the same, but so far I haven't had much good experience with them sadly.

I did mention in the last message that the reason for AUTODOC pricing being around the same as a used part, is because Norwegian pricing is extremely high in comparison to other EU countries, specially Germany and Poland. It's the same for most other parts, a car scrap in Norway will take about the same price for a used injector, headlight or anything else you want, as a new one would cost at AUTODOC etc.

Tomorrow I will give the module to a guy I know who might be able to repair it, if he can't, I will call the dealership and see what progress I can make from a phone call with them.

I appreciate the informative answers, it is nice to finally get further with this, because this happened 1.5 years ago, and first now, I've managed to get pretty far and hopefully I'll have it fixed soon, I miss my ACC :cry:

I have no experience with them, I'm just gun-shy about web stores that appear to sell Chinese Replacement Auto Parts (thanks @Uwe for that acronym :D). If you trust them, then go for it. The worst thing that can happen in most cases is you waste your time pulling it back out and sending it back for a refund.

Happy to help. I'd also be going nuts without my ACC, my drives tend to be long due to stop-and-go traffic. ACC makes that a much more pleasant experience (at least, as pleasant as endless traffic jams can be...)

There are lots of fake parts in circulation that are shamelessly made in Asia with no regard for trademarks or country-of-origin labeling. Parts labelled "Bosch", "Hella" and various other brands have all been faked.

Here is another example (fake NGK spark plugs).

I totally agree with you, it's not always easy to know, I myself try to research a bit before buying, I am not a fan of just purchasing the cheapest possible product. Honestly I don't have insanely amount of experience with AUTODOC either, but I do know a lot of people purchase car parts from there, simply because Norwegian pricing is insane, 2 brake discs and 4 brake pads from Bosch would cost me around 800-950EUR from shops here, instead if purchasing from shops like AUTODOC in Norway, it would cost me ish 200EUR, that's also Bosch. Maybe it's fake, but again, I'd need to buy minimum 4x the amount to reach Norwegian prices, which is crazy, and sad.

I appreciate the good info regarding this tho, It's nice to hear this from people who most likely have a lot more experience then me regarding this, I don't rly know that much, I'm just a middle man who appreciates any form of advice and tips in terms of this matter.

Regarding the labelling, isn't it illegal to fake products like Bosch or Hella, and that all legit companies who sell this, needs some sort of branding on them? I believe Bosch uses fingerprint technology to optically capture the natural surface of a original part that they sell.

Of course it is. But try to enforce that in certain Asian countries. You may or may not get any results at all, but even if you do, somebody else will pop up and do the same thing.

So to finish of this topic in the first place, do you guys have any last recommendations? Do you think I should get a slave module and get it calibrated, or perhaps get a slave and a master from the same car? This is supposed to be without calibration, at least from what I've been told so far. Right now I have no idea what the difference would be if I bought a used or new slave alone or a slave and master, I just know that a new one requires activation since it's never been in a car. Honestly I don't care that much about the price for fixing this, unless It's a very big difference. I also get 3 months of warranty on a used part, with that I have a bit of safety if it doesn't work.

Also forgot to mention that I visit a guy who works in a shop where they make circuit boards and he told me after opening my module that its completely dead, several parts of the circuit board was rusted away due to water getting through there, from what he said, the module has been opened before, those who tried to seal it did a poorly job, and doesn't look very fabricated, so that can be a reason for it breaking, or it was already broken and they fixed it, and it broke again because it was poorly sealed, will never know, but was fun and interesting to take a look at it, since I got it done for free!

Most diagnostics-capable modules in your generation of car will trigger component protection. You're likely not going to avoid a visit to the dealer to remove CP no matter which way you go, so I guess take whichever route is least expensive.

A cursory glance shows they only detail out what's locked out under Gen 1. @AudiA6C7's car is Gen 2.

Hello!

After removing the rear bumper and replacing the slave module j769, I then received new fault codes. I used to have
02850 - Control Module 2 for Lane Change Assistance (J770)
004 - No Signal/Communication

And now I received 2 new fault codes which is

02849 - Control Module for Lane Change Assistance (J769)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation

02850 - Control Module 2 for Lane Change Assistance (J770)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation

I feel like progress has been made, since the light on the blind spot mirror was gone before replacing the slave module, but after replacing it now lights up again, after enabling it on in VCDS. But I still have "Audi Side Assist System Fault" and "ACC and Braking Guard not available" Everything else in the mmi menu is working, except for the side assist, that menu is dark, so I'd assume that the side assist is the thing that needs calibration, which is probably the 2 modules in the rear? I called Audi dealership, and they are saying that you need this plate to calibrate the radar in the rear, which will cost me 450 EUR.

What do you think about this, is there possibly any way to calibrate or fix this with vcds, or is Audi the only way to go here? I've already asked a few other workshops if they are able to calibrate this, but seems like the side assist requires special equipment according to Audi.

Then I will have to ask someone with VCDS to do a full scan again, and then send it to me, and I think they are getting tiny bit tired of me asking every week.. Last time I got it checked it was a workshop guy, and he just took his laptop in my car and took it back in to look if he could calibrate it for me, sadly he didn't have the equipment required. My other friend also did a scan same day, just to check if there was a small chance we would make it work by going into adaptation or security access, sadly we didn't get any further and that got me to call Audi dealership, which made me come here.

I will however ask him if he has the scan from last time, if not we'll see what he says. Is it the freeze frame info you are looking for? Or do you require the full scan to see every single detail?

Primarily we need the current data from your 3C Lane Change module to see its current status, but it will help to see what complaints the rest of your car has developed as a result of this repair.

Also, there's a strong possibility you'll need to go to someone with the necessary equipment to do the calibration portion. There are ways to DIY it, but after you invest the necessary time, effort, and funds to get the equipment, modify it to suit your calibration need, and set everything up, you might as well have paid a shop to do it. Stealership is going to be the most expensive option (but they're guaranteed to have the equipment), 3rd party repair such as body shops or "German tech" shops might have the necessary equipment and would likely be cheaper.

Sorry for the delay, have been very busy last couple of days. I have not been able to get anyone with VCDS to help me, but to be fair, it is probably not that much of a point I guess? I've been told that that I will need to go to a workshop that has the equipment to calibrate the side assist radars anyway. I myself don't know any 3rd party repair shops that do this in Norway, I live in a very small town, and I need to drive like 5hrs to get to Oslo, so the question is if its worth the trouble and time to locate one who does it, might write on one of the facebook forums and see if anyone has this equipment and will do it cheap, but if there's no luck there I might as well just do it at Audi for 450EUR.
