Hi there, so I have a car which drove fine....was parked for a week or two but prior to today, it started fine. Anyway i put in a battery which didn't charger properly which gave me a clue the battery was bad. Anyhow, me thinking it was worth a try with a battery booster attached, I tried to turn the car on and it cranked a little however smoke came from the battery side of the engine compartment. Now I don't know where the smoke came from specifically as I was sat in the car. After this the car stopped cranking.

After this I put in another battery from a working car, it now doesn't crank. Ignition comes on, steering lock is off. Everything has plenty of power. Now bearing in mind it used to start just fine until i put a dodgy battery in causing the car to no longer crank. I am thinking it is an electrical issue. I did a continuity test on all the fuses and listened to the relays for clicks. I then removed the air filter and hooked up a multimeter to see if the starter motor is getting any power. The readings are as followed:

(ignition off) red lead on positive terminal battery, black lead on thick black cable to starter motor or near there: 11.72V
battery with ignition on 12.3V
battery with ignition off 12.45V
(ignition off) red lead on thick starter motor cable that comes from the positive terminal battery, black lead on negative terminal battery: 12.43V
(ignition on) red lead on thick starter motor cable that comes from the positive terminal battery, black lead on negative terminal battery: 12.21V

Terminal 30 on power supply on vcds shows 12.2V with ignition on

How can I further diagnose this problem? I have a working VW with same CR diesel engine, I will compare voltage stats on starter to see if they are the same. Although I have voltage readings, only thing I have noticed is drop in voltage with ignition on. The first reading of 11.72V, I'm unsure of where that black cable is coming from. I gave the starter a few light taps but I'm confident starter is mechanically fine unless it has been electronically damaged. Is the ECU damaged, the power supply that sits next to the battery that has all the terminals going to it? VCDS can't seem to find any major faults that I'm noticing, but perhaps you will.

I mean this circuit is very simple. Turn and hold the key in the crank position and have someone check if the starter is getting the signal at solenoid. If starter is getting signal at the solenoid then its safe to start starter is fucked unless you don't have a good chassis ground. I would assume smoke was from the shitty aux coolant pump that always pukes coolant into the engine wiring harness.

Hmm....okay so this car doesn't have a key, it's a fob and so I'd imagine crank position is with fob all the way in which turns ignition on. After doing this how do I check for signal, using multimeter checking for voltage? How much should the signal be? Am I checking the thick red cable that is attached to solenoid or terminal 50 connector?

I have checked a few videos on YouTube testing starter motor. Have become more familiar but not not 100% sure how you're asking me to test it.

Quick and easy look.. go to 09-08-015.2. Terminal 50 is the activation for the starter, so you can verify the car is wanting to kick the starter over. If the Terminal 50 is flipping to ON, then a closer look at the starter as per Ziddy's post is a good starting point.

But if Terminal 50 isn't flipping, then then we are missing something and need to back pedal a bit.

Yes as Jef mentioned terminal 50 at starter. I would make sure you are getting signal at solenoid. If you are not then trace the wire backwards. If you are getting a signal then starter is no good, unless you have poor chassis ground.

Ok guys, so what i know so terminal 50 is the signal that runs from multiple areas that all connect once ignition is on. From alarm and clutch pedal to the starter motor. I will check if this is working. If this is working I want to hook the cables from battery to starter and then cause starter to turn. If it doesn't turn then starter or solenoid is bad. I will also check for drop in battery voltage to check the connections and leads.

From the outside the starter motor doesn't look promising, the solenoid section is all rusty looking. What I can't understand is starter turned yesterday very briefly. But anyhow I'll check the starter so we can tick this off whether it works or not.

This was a decent guide

The factory alarm has no effect on starter engagement. The clutch pedal is indirectly involved - if the ECU recognizes the clutch being pressed, then it is probably not the cause.

This guide might give a good idea on the mechanical side but the electrics are a bit more complicated on the PQ46 platform than the Mk4.

When you press the key in for starter, are there any relay clicks to be heard from underneath the engine bay fusebox? If there are, the two starter relays are operating and you should probably focus on the starter itself being bad.

Ok guys, so I hooked up positive and negative batteries to the starter motor positive side on the solenoid and negative on the body. Further more I removed the Terminal 50 connector and plugged another lead to positive battery to the connector. The idea was to direct power the starter motor to see if it works, it didn't spin.

09-08-015.2 I checked this as Jef said, terminal 50 is flipping on as I push the fob in beyond ignition position. However you have to hold the fob in for it to remain on so it is a two person job. After this I wanted to see the voltage coming from terminal 50. So I put multimeter on with negative on battery, positive on terminal 50 and someone else pushing key fob in to put the fob in crank position. Checking vcds to see terminal 50 is on, voltage on multimeter was in the m voltage range, very low.

So now I'm baffled, terminal 50 should be pushing out 12v and it isn't. Starter motor won't turn when direct power is applied including to terminal 50. I don't know which one is the issue now. What I can do is check another vw cr car and compare the voltage on that.

As for the relay clicks. When I put key in I checked each individual relay that is under the steering wheel, they all clicked. There is one relay in engine bay marked 100 I swapped that over from another car and didn't make a difference.

I guess what I can do on terminal 50 is a continuity test once terminal 50 is on via fob being pushed in to crank position to see if power is being supplied.

Well is the start dont spin jumping it then I would say it needs a starter. If you have have signal at the starter that will be a separate but related issue.

Wow you learn something everyday. I didn't know there were relays inside the fuse box that sits next to the battery in the engine bay. Watching YouTube you have to remove the battery tray and a relay box slides out of the fuse box. I'll check it tomorrow now.

Please notice the appropriate relays are in the engine bay, in an additional relay carrier underneath the front side of the engine bay fusebox. Not under the dashboard.
