How to measure timing chain stretch on B8.5 Audi S4 3.0T - User Guide?

Is there a tutorial on how to use the VCDS to check the 3.0T timing chain dimensions and compare to OEM spec (to know if there is change / stretch?)

I am at 114k

Do not know how but have the Ross tech tool

Sorry I don't know but I am wondering if this is being asked b/c of the known rocker arm assy issue the engine has??
If that's the case, is there a retro-fit parts kit to permanently resolve this issue?

I have another car that had a serious issue with catastrophic failure regarding rod bearings and a few other items.
two companies have a combined part assembly that permanently resolves the issue.

This may become a sticky at the end of things given the popularity of that engine in many models.
(I have a 2019 S4 w/ 38Kmi I purchased last year)

You can't add an attachment here, copy-paste is the correct way to do it.
It could have been a bit more legible though, if you had copied it from the Auto-Scan text file (typically C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Scans).

Somewhat surprisingly, I can't find a measuring value for Cam Phase Adaptation (or anything similar) in EV_ECM30TFS021_AU48.

@Eric has a B8.5 S4 with a similar ECU. Maybe he knows something I don't?

First to be clear, there is no "known rocker arm assy issue" on the B8 S4. The 2-pedal B9 peeps should stay in their lane

For chain stretch, I actually looked at this semi-recently on mine:

ENG99898,Camshaft adjustment: inlet phase: bank 2,0.375, °

I don't know what the limit values are supposed to be, but I take comfort in the fact that mine has been at that value since 5429km and was -1.125/0.750 at 4400km. Currently 83000km.

You can either search for ENG103031 and ENG99898 in the search box of the advanced measuring values, or search for "phase" which will get you a list short enough to pick the two ENG needed.

Where do you and/or your team (@Uwe I also welcome your input...) suggest to identify the Audi standards to which a comparative analysis can be made? Nice to know the values, but what to compare it to? There are significant potential costs involved should service be required and I'd like to have facts with which these considerations can be made.

Appreciate what you've posted pertaining to checking the Timing Chain Stretch via the VCDS software. I've run same on my 2013 Q5 TFSI 3.0T B8 and have values "Camshaft adjustment inlet phase" of (Bank 1 = -0.375 / Bank 2 = -1.500)

Thanks for ANY guidance/support you can offer!

I like to see those under 4° however the general rule back in the day was 8°. The thing is 8° to 10° was fault code threshold so the car already had MIL on for cam/crank correlation by the time the numbers were that large.

I took a look through the B8 repair manual docs we have from our last erWin Audi subscription (so this is generalizing all of the A4, A5 and Q5 engines) but they all appear to show 11:

• Permissible deviation < -11.01° CRK

• Or

• Permissible deviation > 11.01° CRK

I don't agree with that at all, because having a MIL-free engine showing 10.5° is going to be short-lived and it may already have intermittent misfires, but 11 may be the official threshold for P0016 / P0017.

If you don't have any repair info for the Q5 a subscription to erWin (on a rainy day when you have time to download all of the repair documents, wiring diagrams, etc.) might not be a bad idea. We have those sites linked here:

Sounds like my values (Bank 1 = -0.375 / Bank 2 = -1.500) are well within specifications (your suggested "4" and NOT the "11" which sounds like chain skip territory - i'd never risk that!)
I'm having a start-up rattle for 1/2 second at most (which pushed me to investigate this matter). I have to replace sealant on upper timing chain covers (leaking) and sounds like convenient time to swap out upper timing chain tensioners and guides in same area. Seeking your advice...would you agree with this strategy? Like to avoid pulling engine for lower timing chain work if at all possible.

Ok thanks for the info. FYI I copy / pasted the data you requested from a .pdf of the auto scan and that was generated by my pc. I didn’t substitute the delivery of data you requested with any less quality did I?

Trying to make more sense of your comment about using a phone vs a real pc…the data uploaded was not altered because of an iPhone. What did you mean by that?

• Permissible deviation > 11.01° CRK

I don't agree with that at all, because having a MIL-free engine showing 10.5° is going to be short-lived and it may already have intermittent misfires, but 11 may be the official threshold for P0016 / P0017.

If you don't have any repair info for the Q5 a subscription to erWin (on a rainy day when you have time to download all of the repair documents, wiring diagrams, etc.) might not be a bad idea. We have those sites linked here:
