Hello

I have a Key-Com interface that I have been successfully using with a 3rd-party USB/RS232 adaptor for my 2003 Passat and my USB windows 7 laptop for a number of years. No problems.

I recently leant the unit and USB/RS232 converter to a friend. He couldn't get the unit to work with his 2002 Golf GT Tdi using a USB Windows 7 laptop and got the following error message (see screen-dump below). We thought that the problem may be that the USB/RS232 converter needed drivers (I can't remember if I installed these on my own USB-laptop when I first bought the converter. The make of the converter isn't marked on it and I can't find any driver installation disk for the cable knocking around in my drawer) so we tried buying a new USB/RS232 converter (made by FTDI with the recommended FT232R chip) and tried it with the drivers that were supplied with it using his PC. It still didn't work. We have made the recommended changes to the virtual com port and latency as shown on the Ross-Tech FAQ:

My friend has tried the whole exercise on a different laptop (Windows 8) and still can't get it to recognise the Key-Com. My friend doesn't have a lap-top with a com port, so we can't test the functionality of the Key-Com without the USB/RS232 converter cable(s).

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks

Rob

With a USB converter on a KEY-COM, you can't select USB as the port in VCDS. Look in Device Manager, figure out what COM port number the virtual COM port created by the converter is on, and use that COM port in VCDS.

Thanks Uwe. We'll give that a try and let you know how we get on.
