Is this indicative of a chain on it's way out or might it be related to Lambda sensors? (06 Passat 3.2 V6 (VR6))

Is this error code indicative of a failing chain, or might it just be the sensor (and/or any correlation to the lambda errors)...

Car is a 06 Passat V6, roughly 255000km, always had short oil change intervals (roughly 10K km inbetween) with castrol oil.

At 255,000 km I would consider that quite likely.

Ok, thanks ( is there test I could/should do to verify that it's not caused by failing sensor or other things before doing such a big job ?).

Thanks again.

You can wait for others to chime in, but I believe the limit is (+/-) 2 to 3 degrees.

I think the factory says more like 4 or 5, but that's kind of like diesel injector deviations; factory limits well beyond the point where things are no longer "right".

At 7-8 degrees, this engine almost certainly has a mechanical problem with the chains, guides, or tensioner(s).

Ok, guess that means a bit of a job for me in the near future (hope it lasts until I get it positioned up on the lift (not currently using it) :)

Any other things one should do at the same time when doing chains/guide/tensioners on these, and is there anything else I should investigate before doing this job ?.

Hoping to be able to do it with the engine still in the car

I'm pretty sure the chains and such are on the "back" of the engine -- i.e. on the side with the transmission bolted to it. So the engine and transmission must be split and one or the other has to come out.

I suggest referring to a proper repair manual, and/or find some videos on Youtube.

Both chains, guides, intermediate gear and the bolt for it.

The intermediate gear sometimes wears, but they're fairly cheap and easier to have on hand, unless you're happy to order parts part way through.

The FSI versions of the VR6 seem more prone to the bolt coming loose or failing too.

Oh, and with the AWD, it's probably faster/easier to remove the front of the car and slide the assembly out that way. The front of the car only takes about .5 to 1 hour to remove, compared to trying to remove the trans and angle drive from the back of the engine, the rear driveshaft and the trans is up against the chassis rail...

hmm, ok, wouldn't I have to remove the gearbox anyway ? (including the disconnecting of the driveshaft going to the back?), Have a 2-pot lift in the garage so would at least have access to and able to lower the gearbox down, but never had it of on this car before (or a 4 wd for that matter), so if it's easier to remove front I might opt for that.

Also any idea if the cam-lock plate is the same on these engines as the older 12V VR6 or other size of "spacing"?

With intermediate gears you mean the 2 gears that's inside in between the 2 chains ? (if so I guess the 2 gears on the top normally doesn't have to be changed out ?).

Is there any books that have a complete procedure for this engine (I have the Bentley manual for the VW Corrado VR6, but been a while since I looked in that, and unsure if the procedure is the same for the 3.2)

Yeah, the driveshafts come off anyway, but it the engines coming out, you only have to disconnect them and leave them tied out of the way.
If the trans is coming out, they need the front axles removed, and the rear driveshaft is still stuck in the vicinity of the angle drive - annoying!

I changed the angle drive with the engine and trans in place, on my VR6 Touran, and it was fairly painful, but much simpler than the whole trans.

You can give it a go on your lift - if you get half way through, and change you mind, you can lower it down, remove the front and pull the assembly anyway.

Yes, the smaller half of the intermediate gear has been known to wear on earlier VR6's - it doesn't have many teeth, so the wear seems accelerated. It looks to be about US$50 - I think yours might still have the 2 piece design - replace the bolt though, and I think a small amount of thread-lock is worthwhile. The other gears are all much larger and don't seem to suffer wear.

Mine didn't look too bad, but I did the chains because the engine was out already (4 cylinder to VR6 swap) and had about 150,000kms. I did the gear, because I'd ordered it with the kit anyway :-)

I'l try to have a look at this once it up on the lift again, was hoping to not having to touch the AC, but I guess that might be able to still be attached to the car even if the engine comes out.

Any tips of online shops that have good quality parts that sell the "complete" kit's with the intermediate gears and bolts ?

Thanks again.

I disconnected the compressor from the engine and swung it and the condenser off to the side.

I often use Spareto.com

But get a decent brand - I think I used INA for mine, but the gear is possibly dealer only??? So might be easier to get all from ECS or FCP etc? They can do genuine and aftermarket. The parts aren't terribly expensive (But I rarely use the Dealers here in NZ, because they're FAR more expensive than BMW parts... nearly on par with Toyota's extortionate pricing!)

Yea, I'l have a look around, and same up here in Norway when it comes to dealer prices (on most parts anyway), normally tend to use FEBI/Bilstein parts, but I'l see what is available.

I guess the gears I need to replace then is the: Nr 7, and Nr 6

I see some parts have 2 different versions any idea what the diff is ? (and how to tell/match the numbers in from parts program when it by example says either " >> 3C-7-120 000* " or " F 3C-7-120 001 >>*"

" >> 3C-7-120 000* " or " F 3C-7-120 001 >>*"

means either up to that chassis number and the second one is From that chassis number. So your 3CZ6P179758 fits into the first category (assuming it's still the original engine). yours in 2006 model year and the change was made in the 2007 model year.

7 is the one that can wear, later motors had 6 and 7 combined as one piece (but costs quite a lot). Don't know if they wear less? Decide if it's suitably priced and if you want to order it before hand. I'd expect the bolt to be cheap, so I'd 100% do that!

17 might be an option too - I don't know if these engines wear the cam for the high pressure pump??? the early 2.0 FSI's can (my wifes did!)

Any idea what the difference is between the "new" and "old" version: (new version says reinforced), and if both would fit ?

Not sure that there are diffrences... they both reference the same VW part number...

Maybe one is crappier than the other?

Personally, I'd be looking for a more "mainstream" OE-type manufacturer of parts, like INA or similar.
