I recently bought a 2002 Beetle with the 2.0L engine. The man's daughter had it and suddenly it started running very rough. I spoke with the man and he said he had several people come to look at it and all said it had a dead cylinder and he was looking at an expensive repair. Anyway, I ended up buying it and took it home and put my VCDS on it and it said misfire on cyl 4. The counter was counting up about as fast as I've ever seen it. I put on a new coil pack, no change. Changed the #4 plug and wire, no change. I then did a compression check on all the cylinders and they were all 180 psi +-4. So, not a bad cylinder as he was advised. Cylinders 1,2,3 didn't show any misfires at all. I ohmed the control wire from the coil pack back to the computer and it was good. While I was at it I ohmed a couple more the of the wires that controlled the other plugs and they all measure the same resistance. I cleaned all the grounds and no change. So, I figured that the computer must be bad but I happened to have one so I sent it in and had the immobilizer function removed. Got it back today and installed it and no change. The #4 cyl misfire counter was just flying up. However, when I pulled the #4 plug wire loose I started to miss even more. I then pulled each plug wire loose individually and cylinder #2 made no difference. In other words, that was the cylinder causing the problem. I replace the plug wire and now it runs like a top!

Now for the weird part. Why did VCDS show a misfire on cylinder #4 when it was actually cylinder #2? This is the AVH engine and has the Motronic ME7.5 ignition system which is not a wasted spark ignition like the ME5.9.2

Anyone else ever run in to this situation?

Not much of a head scratcher, what's the firing order:
1342 which means the sequence is
1234

That's not how cylinders are referenced in diagnostics though :D Sounds like a bug/copy-paste error in the ECU's firmware. Do you have a VCDS scan showing the misfire?

You're asking the wrong question.

You should be asking: "Why did the ECU report the misfire on cylinder #4 when it was actually cylinder #2?" ;)

PS: Bugs like that were not uncommon on cars of that vintage. TDIs back then were known for reporting failed glow plugs on the wrong cylinders as well.

Yes it is, I have seen it with injector numbering in Ford, PSA and VW.

I'm not following your logic here, can you explain further?

I agree Uwe, sorry about that. Obviously VCDS is just reading back what the ECU puts out....

I just went out this morning and set VCDS to monitor the cylinder 1-4 misfire events. While watching the misfire readout I pulled each plug wire, one at a time, off the plug and this is what showed up on the misfire counter:

Plug # 1 showed a misfire on cylinder #2
Plug # 2 showed a misfire on cylinder #4
Plug # 3 showed a misfire on cylinder #1
Plug # 4 showed a misfire on cylinder #3
