2017 VW Jetta - Engine misfires on all cylinders :(

Engine: 1.4 TSI / Engine family EA211 / Engine variant CZTA

The car started having random misfires on all cylinders (about 2-5 misfires per cylinder every 5 minutes).

I noticed these items when using VCDS. I am not sure if they are relevant:
  1. VCDS reports “Leakage air” of 1.8kg/hr
  2. I tried performing a "fuel pressure test". The fuel pressure at idle was 12.6 MPa. About 20 minutes after turning off the engine, the fuel pressure maxed at 16.4 MPa.
    Per my understanding, the fuel pressure was expected to double?
  3. Long term fuel trim is +7% at idle. It drops to zero at higher RPMs

I also tried the following tests:
  1. There are no error codes present other than "Engine misfire on cylinder 1". The car got a blinking engine light as a result of that.
  2. Checked timing chain stretch adjustment: it's less than 2degrees
  3. I checked "Camshaft phase position" it was less than 1degree
  4. Tried cleaning VVT camshaft solenoids. They seem to work fine.
  5. Checked battery voltage (12.7V engine off / 13.7V idling)
I also tried the following "repairs" with no success:
  1. Replaced Spark Plugs
  2. Replaced air filter
  3. Cleaned MAF
  4. Replaced oil & filter (5W40)
  5. Tried "italian tuneup": Driving the car at 3-4k RPMs for 30 minutes

First things first you claim you have a mil on and misfires on cylinder 1 yet your log shows zero codes and readiness is set. Please post a valid log.

Oh, good catch!

The above is the latest auto-scan log for my car.
The reason why we can't see MIL nor the DTC codes is that I have reset the codes before running the scan.
I have attempted some of the listed repairs. Then I reset the codes and road tested the car to see if a code will come back.

The code nor MIL didn't come back. However, if I monitor for engine misfires via "Advanced Measuring Values" I can still see that misfires are present.
If I start the car and let it run for 5 minutes, I'll find about 2-5 misfires on each cylinder.

Anyway - there is not enough info here to help you

At least with a DTC set there is Freeze Frame Data which is valuable

I still don't see any log with misfire codes in it. Please post new auto scan.

Did you also go through the whole test sequence to set Readiness? Or is this ECU "tuned" with software that lies?

Hmm. I didn't do any modifications to my ECU. Is that a known bug you are talking about?

No, some tuners do that intentionally, in an effort to make it easier to pass emissions inspections. However, some emissions test software knows about this trick.

Hi! Thanks for your input so far!
I was driving the car today and it started shaking for a few seconds.
Sure enough, it triggered another misfire DTC code.

Finally, I am including a report with appropriate freeze frame.

Please swap coils between cylinder 1 and 4 clear faults and test drive. See if misfire follows coil and now sets misfire on cyl #4, if so replace coil.

Wow! You were right! I've swapped coils 1 & 3 and the misfire immediately moved to #3,
Thank you EuroX! You guys here are legends!

I've replaced the faulty coil with a new one and I can immediately feel the difference. The engine feels so much more calm, no shaking.



FYI, there is a spring inside of each coil which is supposed to push against the spark plug in order to maintain a good contact.
It was hard to put the new coil inside. The spring was giving me so much resistance that the coil just wanted to jump out.
However, the spring on the old coil was actually giving me zero resistance. It felt like the spring is non-existent.

I wonder if this is the root cause of the issue. The contact between the coil and the spark plug was weak due to the worn out spring.

If you cleared codes before you fixed the fault in my arena - You would end up where you are !!

I come from a sort of but not quite a Military background - Similar !! Suffice to say that if I cleared a code prior to fix - I shudder to think as a grown man how I would answer my supervisor !!
