Resolved Hello, First time post.

2015 Passat TDI SE, 116K. Car runs fine. I have multiple dash indicators... Steering assist, ERROR: airbag, stabilization control (ESC), TPMS, cruise is inop. Scan says right rear speed sensor has multiple codes. Sensor will be here tomorrow. Been working on cars for 45 years. Former avionics technician on large transport category aircraft. Comfortable with all types electronic test equipment. Survived with a simple OBDII code reader until now. Not familiar with VCDS but I'm guessing it will come with time. I was able to clear everything using the factory setting reset but all the errors and warnings came back. From what I can see, I need an airbag module, abs control module, and cruise control module. abs module looks to be almost impossible to access. Any secret on R&R the abs module greatly appreciated. Difficult to understand how all these electronic modules would fail at once.

Also parts prices for new parts are almost unaffordable. I'd rather not purchase used. I'm good with rebuilt/remanufactured. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Scan below. Thank you. Rich

Hi and welcome.

Why do you think you need an ABS module? All the faults in that module point at the right rear wheel speed sensor. A problem with the wheel speed sensor will trigger a cascade of faults in other module because they all get data from the ABS. Now whether this is actually a bad wheel speed sensor, or a problem with the pulse-ring at the wheel, or even the wheel bearing, is difficult to determine remotely.

Head for Measuring Blocks in the ABS and observe (or log) all four wheel speeds. When driving in a straight line, they should all be the same. My guess is the right rear one will be off from the rest (if it works at all).

There is no "Cruise Control Module". Cruise is all done between the 16-Steering Wheel and 01-Engine. However, it won't work while the ABS is unhappy.

The Airbag module seems to have an issue with the passenger seat occupancy module in the passenger seat. Check the electrical connections to that module before throwing any parts at this.

Difficult to understand how all these electronic modules would fail at once.

Because that's unlikely to be what's going on here.

I was thinking the sensor might be pushing though to the other faults, but was too pessimistic. I did reseat the abs module connecter. Passenger seat airbag light does cycle off and on when occupied. I will reseat connectors. Thank you very much for the reply.

Had this on my MK7 golf. Cluster went haywire and lost all the same systems (less the lane as it's not fitted)

Finally installed the sensor. Took forever to arrive. It park, easuring blocks for the other wheels show zero, right rear fluctuates all over the place. When I drive, it goes to 40 kph and stops. Other 3 reflect the speed of the car. With the fluctuations at idle, would seem to point to wiring, not the bearing or the pulse ring. Although corrosion on the ring could cause readings to fluctuate at idle. Could be some real crap on the ring.

I have had mental health issues solving these..

When it is Right Rear it is always the Bearing / Phase Wheel - and always Right Rear !!! - Rarely the Sensor

It must be a conspiracy as the Ford Fiesta is the Same ?

Thanks Doc. I have fond memories of Skulthorpe Weathersfield and Lakenheath! It was obvious viewing the measuring blocks. I'm giving the pulse/tone ring a try. Although if I have the rear disassembled - I think I'll replace the wheel bearing.

Hello, Replaced the sensor. Tried to find the pulse/tone wheel but was unable. Ordered bearing. Good price at online. New bearing came with a new tone wheel. New bearing installed. Measuring blocks still shows right rear oscillating with a variety of readings, should be zero in park. The other 3 show 0 kph in park. Seems like this could be a wiring or connector issue between the right rear sensor and where ever it goes to the ABS module.

Long delay in repair due to broken laptop. Followed wiring from sensor from wheel well to rear seat. Harness follows beneath the bottom door jambs. Removed trim to passenger front seat. No change when moving harness. Removed the battery and cleaned terminals. Removed battery ground and reconnected. Reading changed to constant 2kph when stopped. After test drive, fluctuations returned. Decided to swap sensor with the left rear. Error swapped sides so new received sensor is faulty. Carparts.com is replacing sensor. Will troubleshoot AIRBAG error next. Will start with reseating airbag component connecters.

Closing this out. The new sensor cleared: airbag, steering assist, abs, tpms warnings. Also cruise control is working. Thanks to all for your replies.
