Yes, English speakers have a hard time with pronouncing it the way a German would. If they try, the results are terribly inconsistent. Hence Sam's comment:

Do you have a personal favorite

For English speakers, I tell them to pretend it's spelled "Oovay". They can pronounce that with consistency.

Note that my name does not have an umlaut over the 'U'. It's not really the 'U' they have so much a problem with, but the inflection, the fact that the 'w' is pronounced more like a 'v' and the trailing 'e'.

German is extremely phonetic. English, not so much.

For English speakers, the U-with-umlaut is about as difficult as the 'th' sound is for ze Germans.

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"'s in the languag is disgrasful, and they should go away.

By the 4th yar, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" wiz "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer…

When I lived in Michigan close to 15 years ago, it was a rare treat to get Yeungling beer. So, every chance I got when I was out of state, I'd at least buy a case to take back with me. Sometimes friends/acquaintances would share when they did the same. But, in retrospect, it was probably more that, while yes, it is a pretty decent beer, it was more the effect that I couldn't regularly get some that makes your brand want it that little bit more... because it wasn't easy to get.

It's solid, easy-drinking beer. I haven't had any since moving to the West Coast, though I'm sure if I really wanted to, I could get my hands on some.

So many other microbrews to try out with new and different things, though!

Of course, now my brain is like "you know, you really haven't had that in a long time, maybe it's time to refresh your memory on it, go find some!" heh

Yet that was slightly different to the way Bruce pronounced it when I met him in Birmingham a few years ago. I heard more ‘Oo-vah’. That may be because I’m a Geordie - and that’s a different language in itself

Because of my accent, if I tried to say ‘Oovay’ it would probably come out as ‘Oovee’ with a definite ‘Oooh’ rather than an ‘Uhh’. Haha I’m so sorry Uwe.

I always embrace the way people pronounce Christopher. Whether it’s ‘Crease’ as my Greek friend calls me - or my American in-laws; whose daughters really emphasise the ‘furr’ at the end.

And then there’s our @Dana. I would pronounce it as ‘Darna’ but I think Americans would say more ‘Day-na’

Here’s a bit of the Geordie tongue. Although he’s teaching her ‘Gan’, we always say Gannin’. As in, I’m gannin’ yem. (I’m going home):

I have listened to the Germans pronounce Uwe's name and when they say it, it is more of OOO-vah.. then it is OOO-vay... The "e" sound as Uwe indicated is one which Americans really struggle for there is no sound in our language like it. I try to swallow the "ah" so its not an "ah" either. Maybe a "uh" would be more appropriate phoenetically?

You-vay I've heard... Wrong! EWE - You... Wrong! As Uwe wrote, the most consistent way to pronounce it is Ooo-Vay.

I've never been yelled at for mispronouncing my brother's name. So, I guess I am ok? Or he just ignores the source?
