When you go to do the Auto-Scan, you have to select the type of vehicle from a list. With newer VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicles that use the CAN Gateway for diagnostics, you can simply select the Auto-detect (CAN only) from the top of the list. Older generation K-Line diagnostics can be found in the drop down menu. You can also type in the 7th and 8th digits of the VIN in the "Search" box and that will really narrow down your listing.

If you have an older K-Line car, it is also possible to get your car to be listed right under Auto-detect (CAN only) listing. Say for example you wanted your 2002 Audi A8 to be listed just below the Auto-detect (CAN only). To do this, we need to open the AutoScan.txt file, locate and copy the line of data for the 2002 A8 and then add that information to the MyAutoScan.txt file.

From the the first screen of VCDS, click on the tiny VCDS icon in the top left corner and then select "Open VCDS Folder".

Now locate the "AutoScan.txt file and open it in Notepad.

With the AutoScan.txt file opened, I locate the line for the the 2002 Audi A8, highlight the data and copy it.

Once you have the data copied, go back into the Auto-Scan screen of VCDS and click on the link for MyAutoScan.TXT file.

This will open the MyAutoScan.txt file in Notepad. Locate the line that has "; 01,My Car,01,03,15". Now just below this line paste in the data that you copied and you should get something like this:

Now save the updated version of the MyAutoScan.txt file. Now in Auto-Scan function of VCDS, whatever data you just saved to the MyAutoScan.txt file will show up just below the Auto-detect (CAN only) listing.
