i received a post card today from VW that says my car needs a software update to improve the TPMS.
VW TPMS Recall 45J6 (US)
link to TSB --> Volkswagen TSB 45J6
description: "In a test environment, in rare cases, the tire pressure monitoring system may not detect an air pressure loss in the time specified in the NHTSA FMVSS No, 138 “Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems” test procedure if it occurs simultaneously at the same rate in all four tires. A sudden loss of pressure in all four tires at the same time that goes undetected as required by regulations increases the risk of a crash."
corrective action: "Update the TPMS software."

i scheduled for 31MAR2023 and will report how it goes.

blame that on firestone and ford. Firestone and Ford tire controversy

according to this document --> (Chronology for Volkswagen Recall Codes 45J6, 45J7, 45J8 TPMS Noncompliance) it has been known for almost 3 years and in review by NHTSA for over 2 years before published as a recall in OCT2022.

my opinion.... coming from a time before TPMS, i don't think this is too much of a concern and would personally agree with VW's claim of "inconsequential non-compliance" in this instance.
the indirect TPMS system in the car has worked for me to identify a slow leak in a punctured tire. and hopefully i'm aware enough to notice if all four tires are going out at the same time.

I'm not sure I understand the logic. That mess that didn't involve a sudden loss of pressure in all four tires. It was due to Ford specifying a stupidly low pressure to begin with, likely compounded by owners not even maintaining that, and of course a crappy tire design.

This was due to someone failing to do a visual inspection of the tires before driving the van, which had been sitting unused for quite some time.

Clearly if you're fleeing the police and go over a set of stop sticks you need the TPMS system to alert you that you have destroyed all 4 tires and should peacefully pull over and wait to be arrested :)

In such a case it should be no problem for the iTPMS to alert you, because the pressure goes to zero very fast in all 4 tires;)

There are recalls (Audi) 45J7, and (VW) 45J6 and 45J8, because of the iTPMS problem for:
  • 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan LWB
  • 2019 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen
  • 2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
  • 2019 Volkswagen Golf R
  • 2020-2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
  • 2021 Volkswagen Atlas FL
  • 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta
  • 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
  • 2019-2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI
  • 2019-2020 Volkswagen Atlas
  • 2019-2020 Volkswagen Golf A7
  • 2019 Audi Q3
  • 2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet
Description of the cause:
The brake control unit hardware was changed, but the related module software was not adapted to the change. This may lead to a small deviation in the calculation of the current tire pressure.

affected seems ABS with SW-Version 0108 for HW 35 & 82 :
  • 5Q0614517DS (HW: 5Q0 614 517 BN)
  • 5Q0614517DT (HW: 5Q0 614 517 BP)
  • 5Q0614517EB (HW: 5Q0 614 517 BR)
  • 5Q0614517EC (HW: 5Q0 614 517 BS)
I found no info, but maybe they update to the newer SW:0191.

It would be interessting to know if the SW-Version 0107 for this HW produced at the same time that's not used for NAR is also effected.

for example 2019 Tiguan:
Code:
Part No SW: 5Q0 614 517 EE HW: 5Q0 614 517 BN
Component: ESC H35 0107
