I just finished up replacing the cam chain tensioner/adjuster on the passenger side (with cylinder 1,2,3) on my 99Audi A6 c5 2.8 30v AHA avant

How can I check timing with VCDS before turning the car on?

Also I want to prime the fuel system and do a throttle body adaptation since I also removed intake manifold and throttle body to look at my valves which all seemed in good condition. I scraped a minimal amount of carbon from them but the valves looked straight. This model has the drive by cable throttle.

I tried entering 035 in the engine section but I am a little lost on where to get better directions for using this.

Hi and welcome.

I rather doubt that a 1999 ECU has the ability to check cam timing, but please post an Auto-Scan so people can see exactly what ECU this car has.

Apologies I told myself to remember to post the auto scan and it completely slipped my mind. Also this scan was taken prior to my repairs as I havent done another scan yet.

Thank you for the welcome and the info about my ECU. Yeah I realize its an old car now basically historic haha. Ok well as soon as you think its ok to try and start up from being taken apart that far let me know. I am looking forward to firing her up and getting her out of my friends garage who has so patiently let me keep inside while I work. Potentially just a fuel prime and a throttle body adaptation and I should be good to start it? Ive read about throttle body adaptations by keeping the key to on position for 3 minutes. Though id like to be sure I have primed it correctly so I can rule out that as any issues if I have a less than perfect process when I turn her over.

That car has chain only to run second camshaft, Main thing is Timing belt.
Now did you count 16 pins from one mark to other mark , this is most important when you installing cam chain?
Pay tension on right side of picture which pin you start , I have seen people start counting straight up from cam mark and end up with 15 pins and car will have long crank and get DTC for Camshaft sensor .

As I expected -- very much old-school. No cam timing data to be had from that ECU.

My deepest apologies for such a late reply that is not usually like me but I was inconvenienced with a possible destroyed engine although thankfully not! I ended up running a test on VCDS that tested my fuel injectors and a few other parts and I heard my fuel pump turn on. I know I probably shouldnt have been messing around pressing buttons without clear guidance but I figured since I could hear the fueld pump turn on and prime everything I was ok. I quickly skipped through the rest of the testing procedure and figured I was good to go and thats when the nightmare began.

Im sure it was unrelated to the injector testing but I went to start the car and it started instantly which I felt was a good sign as I had both valve covers off and the intake manifold off and throttle body apart for a couple weeks. One second after starting an extremely loud knock sound occurred and I quickly shut the car off. I ended up trying again once more while filming so I have a video if anyone wants me to post it. A couple people guessed I had rod knock which i looked up and wrongfully believed I did as well.

I decided coincidence is just a word used when you cant see levers and pulleys and since one CCT had failed the other is likely to have failed as well. I pulled it and replaced the drivers side this time Bank2 and went to start to the car and things were good. All good. Lifters were a little loud at first but went away in a second which had a sound that gave me a fright but I knew was much quieter that what I heard when CCT failed and wow that sure was scary.

This probably the best diagram to use as reference that I have seen so thank you very much. And actually im not sure what happened but I did end up with a link less on top that was noticed when I went to lock cams with cam lock bar. The cam washer was pointing about 30 degrees or so of center which i had never had happen to me so I pried off the valve cover and was able to get it right and then everything went normal when i buttoned her up.

I posted my question on an Audi forum but if anyone here has any experience or advice on replacement tensioners to use i am on the market. I have cheap chinese ones in there right now but i dont want to drive it much if at all until i get something better. I think i paid 40 bucks each for those and im not willing to spend the 1000 plus dollars for OEM. I have budgeted 500 dollars for the whole kit including gaskets so any recomendations would be really helpful as there is no shortage of alternate manufacturer options.
