Car: 2016 Audi S7 4.0L V8 (4G)

Couple weeks ago on a cold morning a minute into the drive the EPC light came up, limiting car RPM to 4000. Pulled over and restarted car and the EPC light was gone. No power loss or anything noted other than the light.
A few days later, again 1-2 minutes into the drive the EPC light came back again. Pulled over and restarted, light went away but came back again soon after along with the check engine light. Into the drive the EPC light went away as well as the RPM restriction. CEL stayed however.

Auto-scan produced a P0021 error code (Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)) which is for the Bank 2 intake camshaft. I removed the Camshaft Variable Timing Solenoid and cleaned it as best I could through those screens. I did notice some faint red specks of something on it almost like it was small particles of the O-ring, however the O-ring is a black color so I'm not sure what that could've been. It looked very clean otherwise. Checked the resistance which measured 8.2 Ohms (if I remember correctly). Tried to bench test, but was difficult with such a small electrical connector. When I did get the leads on it wouldn't actuate, but could be because I was using 9v instead of 12v? Will test it again next time I have it out because I have a suspicion it will be coming out again...
Also used the VCDS logging to compare the intake cam signals and timing to see if anything stuck out as a blaring issue. I assume that the difference between the two banks would need to be much more than 1 degree for it to through an EPC/CEL.

Put it back into the car and has been fine for the past 2 weeks. Today on another cold day the EPC light came back on. This time after the engine was already up to operating temp so that somewhat ruled out my concerns about oil viscosity. Restart car, EPC came back again and then the CEL. Same error code after the scan.

My question: is replacing the camshaft solenoid the best next step or am I completely off base thinking that this component is the problem? Could it be the camshaft position sensor? Issue is intermittent, so I don't think my timing is off or is ECU related. It is very tricky to remove these so I don't really want to swap it with the other bank to test because chances are I'll break something else! lol. Tight spacing under the hood... I have ordered a new one, but if that doesn't fix the problem I want to at least have this thread started with other possible causes/solutions or anyone who's dealt with this in the past.

Might not be related, but not sure why the intake air temp is showing 42C when it was -11C outside?

not sure why the intake air temp is showing 42C when it was -11C outside?
This is a turbo-charged engine, right? What the ECU needs to know to do its job correctly is the temperature of the air going into the engine. The temperature of the air ahead of the turbos and intercooler is much less relevant.

Thus I would suppose that temperature is measured after the turbos and after the intercooler. And even if the turbos aren't doing much compressing at 1220 RPM, they're still hot and the air passing through them will pick up some of that heat.

Ohm spec for the camshaft adjuster valves is 12 to 20Ω at 20C... so technically, replace it. But before you do that, 0n bank 2, swap the intake and exhaust adjuster valves around and see if the code moves from intake to exhaust cam. If so, great, replace the valve. If not... :banghead:

It was probably 0C or lower in the garage when I did the Ohm test. Could be why it was ~8Ω. Wish I knew to bring it inside to warm up before testing it.

The bank 2 exhaust adjuster valve is the hardest to get to. I would probably be better off swapping it with the other bank instead to do that test.

I am starting to get really worried that it will end up not being the adjuster... only other thing I could think of would be that the VVT cam gear sprocket itself could be sticking or something. If it turns out to be, best case the symptom goes away in warmer weather and doesn't come back (maybe some oil flushes or something as well?). Worst case, I bet the entire engine has to come out in order to remove the gear.

I used to have a business winding coils..

I highly doubt you would see the coil change 4 ohms in 12C temp diff.. My guess is the lower resistance measured is because some of the turns have been shorted and if that be true, the induced magnetic field operating the solenoid would be reduced and perhaps changing the distance or the strength of the pull.

Your reading leads me to think that solenoid is not to spec.

I don't recall the specific temperature coefficient of copper wire - I'm sure I could look it up. Even super fine wire, I would not expect a 12C temp difference to reduce the value by 4 ohms. I'm not saying it is not possible but I am skeptical.

Given that it is hard to get to it - I get why you really want to be sure about it.

Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better about replacing it. Gives me hope!

I'll be replacing it shortly and will report back in a few weeks if no codes reappear. Helpful for anyone else who comes across the P0021 or the code for the other bank or exhaust solenoid.

So the coil might be looking a bit crispy like this coil... and there is something else wrong in that photo, 5 points to whoever spots it first.

Update: Put the new valve actuator part in yesterday. Before I did I tested the resistance at 8.2Ω at room temp. Tested the old part at room temp which was ~7.9Ω.
If the fault code doesn't come back it could be because there was something clogging up the valve or it was starting to go electrically on the inside. Will report back if all is good.... or bad.

Dirty bad oil, how often do you change oil? Sticky VVT, contaminated channels, defect valve can cause this.
Can also be timing jumped a tooth, check in accordance with manual, to be sure.

Well it seems I should've triple checked before starting the work, but it appears that I mixed up the intake and exhaust cams even though I thought I was being super careful not to. I REALLY wish I mixed up the engine banks because Bank 1 is SO much easier to work on and access compared to Bank 2.

The bank 2 intake cam valve solenoid is buried under the coil pack harness.... so this is going to be a huge PITA to swap in.

Chain side is facing the rear of the car, so bank 2 is on the right hand side when facing the engine. Intake cam on the bottom right. Everything is in the way including the coolant tank. :banghead:

With the brand new OEM camshaft adjuster I have still received the EPC warning light and when checking the codes it's still a P0021. I even tried to blow out the oil passage ways with compressed air and outlined by Audi: Audi Technical Update - 1.0 TFSI Camshaft Diagnosis

My next step will be to try an engine flush and oil change in hopes that it clears or unsticks whatever is causing the issue. Otherwise I may be trying to access the camshaft timing chain while the engine is still in the car to see if the chain guide has disintegrated looks like it can be done while in the car based off of this: Audi Technical Service Bulletin to me though it is not necessary to remove the front bumper and cooling fan housing..... unless of course you have to in order to turn the crank.

I used VCDS to look at the Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1&2: phase position - in order to see if there is a mechanical issue. Bank 1 phase position was 2.83° and Bank 2 was 0.79° at idle. Is that a large discrepancy between banks? Luckily I have not experienced any misfires, rough idle, engine chain noise, loss of power or fuel mileage. It seems entirely electronic at this point.

Any suggestions where to go next?

Your off a little over 2 degrees, don't know what is acceptable, but you are certainly not out a tooth. count the teeth, divide 360 by it and that is a tooth.

My guess do the oil change, hope for the best. Mentioned small red specs, and screens. Don't know how many screens are on this motor. And the red specs, maybe silicone from a repair, just talking out loud here.

Funny that the 2 degrees is off on the opposite bank that is throwing the code.

Appreciate the feedback on the oil and possible silicone. At first I thought maybe it was bits of the chain guide, but they should be rigid and not sure how they would make it up into the oil passages for the camshafts. Silicone makes sense if it is. After attempting to blow compressed air down through the hole I am starting to get the EPC more frequently, but it goes off more quickly. Before I went 500km without getting the EPC, but now after putting the new solenoid I am getting the light again. Oil change and time will tell....

I know in doing dianostices with a scope they always say," WHAT DOES A GOOD ONE LOOK LIKE'? That is why it is always nice to capture data on a known good runnin unit.
Maybe some input from other players as I have none.

Audi Technical Update - 1.0 TFSI Camshaft Diagnosisa

After reading this, I'm thinking there is still some parts of an adjuster floating around in the system, probably at a screen again. My comment on silicon probably off, as adjuster are orange/yellow. If changing oil, tear open the oil filter and see what you find. 2egrees not a jumped tooth but adjustment not allowed to get back to zero, JMO.

Update: Don't want to jinx it, but 650kms later and still no EPC or CEL since doing the engine flush and oil change. It has been a lot warmer out too, so not sure if that is playing a part as well? When I did the flush, I took the car around the block slow so that the timing would advance which would allow the detergent to pass through those oil passages and into the camshaft adjuster. Technically should've used two cans of the Liqui-moly flush since the V8 oil capacity is 8.7L, but the one can and idle for 15 mins seems to have done the trick. Found nothing in the oil filter as well. Oil looked good and it still had lots of mileage left in it before it was due for the next oil change. Went with a different oil weight as well which is thinner at higher temps. Perhaps that helped as well?

I was prepared to have to remove the camshaft adjuster while the engine was still in the car to replace it. So fingers crossed it never comes to that!
