G'day,
New to posting but old reader of others probs for proactive reasons.
Touareg v10 7l 2003 117k: throwing dtc 001598-001 (voltage upper limit exceeded) on address 34 only, already checked fuses, relays, relevant grounds to the circuit, alternator and voltage regulator, DFM and L volts and j197 inside and out; all good. New oem compressor fitted (working), no other oem or aftermarket electricals added. Nowhere on the car can I find an 18+v reading, thought I'd found a spike at one point, but turned out to be a dmm battery about to see its last days. Any and all advice gratefully accepted. Scan below is from yesterday on a fully charged battery with charger attached and includes measuring block readings at end.

Hi and welcome.

Have you looked at MVB 001 in the module itself? It shows what it perceives the voltage (on both terminals 15 and 30) there. Physical reality is that it cannot be higher than actual battery / alternator voltage. If it shows higher than that, something is wrong with the voltage sensing circuit in the module.

Hi Uwe and thanks for the reply/welcome,
I'll do MVB 001 tomorrow, but your analysis the module might be toast is possibly good; the vehicle was parked parallel to 60+klik winds for a week or more and j197 worked overtime to keep the car level.
I'm just trying to avoid the vw cashcow syndrome; if it don't work buy a new (vw) one; this car has not seen or experienced a dealership, vw tech or indie tech in 17 years, I'd like to keep that in tact.
Cheers

Hi Uwe,
Showing the same Vs as the original scan, pulled the pcb again to try and workout where the stepdown circuit on the board is; needle in a haystack comes to mind sans printed circuit diagram. I'll try spoofing it with a couple of Buck converters 12v to 5v and see what pops up.
cheers

slight edit, only need to try one buck on pin4 which is the term30 side.

Partial success (the MIL now shows suspension settings and changes with input at selector, but fails with dtc after minutes still 01598 of 18.36v). Unsure which chip or voltage regulator ic is reporting overvoltage of exactly 6v or which chip is terminal 30 and which is terminal 15, assuming terminal 30 is lefthand side chip (it's the closest to the j197 terminal 30 pin in) as you look down at it. Anyone know which pin is RESET pin on xc505503vp8 0k50e (the chips used on the board) I'll try and peg it to ground, charge the board and force the reset... hopefully. Or even better a pinout diagram. Can only assume the board suffered a brown-out at some point and disrupted the
firmware or regulator ic circuit. Cannot desolder chip as the pins terminate at the board not through. Looking at the board it's also possible that it has one or more voltage regulators soldered through so will test and see if they are reporting erroneous voltages to the circuit and try to see if replaceable.

I rather doubt that the problem here is a voltage regulator. Terminal 30 is simply un-switched system (battery) voltage. This is likely fed into a simple resistor divider and from there to an A2D pin on the microcontroller running this module. If one of the resistors in the divider goes out of spec or has a bad solder connection, then the voltage reading will be off.

Makes for an interesting afternoon; thinking back to when I fitted the new compressor, it fired up normally for a minute then reverted to its fault state so could well be a resistor at the root of the prob because the mcu is reporting actual state of the system. If it is, don't see a way of repairing as soldering grains of rice is not one of my fortés, but finding it will kill an hour or two; help if I could find a pcb schematic/diagram but my research has turned up nothing from ate, hella or sachs

ok, got two parellel surface mounted diodes in a cluster of components (unknown, same size as rock salt and grains of rice) just after the relay one that has continuity both ends and 12.66v at both ends. Assuming it's shot. Hard to follow where it feeds as some of the pcb has conformal coating which hides the component reference and others you need an electron microscope to read. Will try mouser for the equivalent piece... more fun than buying another j197 and cheaper!

RESOLVED. While taking voltages on the board I unintentionally shorted out the board from the first NEC relay to the first group of diodes. After some messsing around I was able to solder in a bridge to replace the shorted out area, tested the board and no immediate probs but was still reverting to fault after a couple of minutes. Removed board from circuit overnight. This morning the suspension had lifted car to basic setting, how remains a mystery as j197 was out of circuit, but have to assume the short caused shock reset and when I tested the board with engine running the day before the MIL fault was a remnant, and it was charging the resevoir with the MIL showing. Prior to yesterday the resevoir was flagging 0bar, will scan later today and send vcds scan. Probably not the best way to resolve the fault, but hey it's working!
