I think this app is doing something nefarious according to the regs.............maybe it's time to call CARB and the EPA........?
Instructing people to erase OBD2 codes just to see is unlawful & without being done by proper procedure.

The person that comes in shooting their mouth off, I tell them no thanks do it yourself.........
I'm insulted how this advertisement has grouped us professional shops.........

The New Device That Mechanics Don't Want You Knowing (prevents $1,000s in costly auto repairs)

July 03, 2017

We've all been there. Driving down the road, jamming to your favorite tunes when you hear a loud 'DING DING DING'. Your check engine light starts flashing. You think "well that can't be good". You pull over and call the local mechanic.
Yep, we've all been there. It's not a good feeling when you have to take your car into the shop. Especially if you don't fully trust the mechanic shop.

mechanic1.jpg

Your first feeling might consist of a knot in your stomach while thinking of how much the repair will cost you. But the second feeling (and maybe the worst feeling) is the anger building up wondering if the mechanic is going to take advantage of you.
You know, that feeling when the mechanic comes over to you to let you know that the check engine light came on because a crucial (and very expensive) part is going bad and it's vital that you fix it now. But how do you know that he's telling the truth?
It's no fun getting an auto repair bill that's 10x higher than you thought it would be. But it's definitely no fun to feel like you are being ripped off and taken advantage of by a mechanic who's telling you to replace unnecessary parts. But for vehicle owners who's vehicle was made after 1996, there is hope...
Clever New Device Diagnoses Your Car

Two engineers based out of Atlanta, GA were tired of seeing their friends and family get taken advantage of at auto shops, so they decided to do something about it. They created FIXD, the new affordable device that plugs into your car’s OBD (on-board diagnostics) port – the very same port that mechanics use to figure out what’s wrong with your car.
EVERY car built in 1996 or later is required to have this port.
This new device will instantly diagnose your car’s problems for you and translate them into simple, easy-to-understand terms – and much more! Meaning, the next time a mechanic is trying to pull one over on you, you can call them on it!
THE BEST PART: If and when that ‘Check Engine Light’ comes on, FIXD tells you exactly what’s causing it in a way anyone can understand! No more looking up codes or taking it to the dreaded auto shop only to be given a list of unnecessary repairs – never again!
You can also turn off the check engine light right from the FIXD app if the problem is not serious or if you want to see if it will reoccur. How cool is that?!
Millions of drivers across the country are vulnerable to being ripped off by mechanics, and sadly, many feel that they have no other option than to buy whatever the mechanic recommends. The good news is that this breakthrough device is now available in the U.S. so vehicle owners can learn exactly what's wrong with their car using just their smartphone. Get FIXD here >>
How FIXD Works

Using FIXD is extremely simple.
  1. Plug the small sensor into the OBD (on-board diagnostics) port of your car. (It’s the same port that mechanics hook their code reader to, located under your steering wheel usually)
  2. The sensor connects via Bluetooth to the FIXD App on your smartphone, where you can easily see a quick scan of all your car’s systems and any problems found.
  3. FIXD shows you what’s wrong and how severe the problem is... in simple, easy-to-understand terms so you know what’s going on.
how-fixd-works.jpg

If it’s something simple like a loose gas cap, FIXD can turn off your check engine light right from the app. This function is also helpful if you want to turn off the warning light to see if the error pops back up (sometimes a computer glitch will trip false errors).
If it’s a real problem that needs attention, this device arms you with the knowledge you need when talking to your mechanic. I guarantee you’ll be treated differently when you come in knowing what you’re talking about. That kind of confidence saves you money.
Where Can I Get FIXD?

FIXD is running a special promotion right now where you can get two FIXDs for $88 (they are great gifts for your kids or family members!). Select your state below to start your order. Select Your State:

really? plenty of posts here suggesting clearing codes 'just to see if they come back'.

It technically is illegal here, that is why auto-stores that sell parts in CA are not allowed to even hook up anymore.

In NY if you are not a registered repair shop and hook up and reset the codes you can be fined if doing it for someone else.

So the guy doing it for themselves is one thing but if you are instructing people to do it and are not looking at the car as a licensed tech......... that's illegal.
This new device will instantly diagnose your car’s problems for you
BULLSHIT!

That's false advertising......because a scanner doesn't diagnose a car nor does VCDS........ it is used in conjunction with the repair manual & tests to diagnose the car.

https://www.arb.ca.gov/regact/obdii06/19682clean.pdf

I'm just annoyed at the way the advertisement slams repair shops into a category as being scumbags..........

I will soon be going to DMV court in front of the magistrate & to help set a precedent on this stuff for illegal repair shops.

Looking forward to it!

...because a scanner doesn't diagnose a car...

You are most indeed correct in saying that the scan tool does not diagnose the car. The diagnostics are self-generated by on-board computers, hence the term On-Board Diagnostics (OBD). :) The scan tool just allows humans to read what the car is trying to tell them.

If you want to go after cheaters, there is more than one diesel tuner selling a box that stays plugged into the OBD port with the sole purpose of automatically clearing MILs thrown because of disabled emissions devices like EGR and particulate filters. Now THAT is slimy.....

You mean like tuners setting readiness flags to always ready gas or diesel? :p

or

Like when tuners alter the use of the VIN # further implying a conformity & to activate their nefarious unlawful code that is without conformity of exemption?

So much for off road use clause.............

They fixed the Rock up nice over the past few years.
About an hour to main event.

Glad to see that SLime Rock Park is doing something with the money they screwed my club out of.

My no-buy list:

1) SLime Rock Park

2) Anything from/in the state of Ohio

3) Walmart, and any other Walton family business

What did we do this time?

My favorite "Cannonball Run" movie quote, from the drivers meeting before the race started:

"Of course you know certain skeptics note that perhaps 10,000 of the nations's most elite highway patrolmen are out there waiting for us after we start, but let's stay positively: Think of the fact that there's not one state in the 50 that has the death penalty for speeding... although I'm not so sure about Ohio." -Brock Yates

Let's just say that there's a reason why Cincinnati Microwave (creator of the famous Escort radar detector) was located in Ohio and not another state.

Ever since they extorted $60 out of my wallet on the side of the road back in 1990 (when I was seriously doing 63 MPH in a 65 zone), the only business that they have seen from me is dropping steaming deuces in Ohio Turnpike rest areas. Heck, I've driven through Ontario (Canada, eh) three times just to avoid even having to lay a tire in that state when going to Michigan.....

I know Ohio has that reputation, but in my experience, there's another state that's worse. In 2001, my son and I did a 7500 mile loop of the country. On the way back, much of the route was on I80. We saw more cops in the 165 miles through Ill-noise than on the entire rest of the trip put together.

We saw more cops in the 165 miles [I-80] through Ill-noise than on the entire rest of the trip put together.

I have crossed Illinois on I-70 at least six times in the past, and do not recall seeing a large number of police cars. Four of those crossings were as a sitting duck, since I was towing my tiny 500 pound race tire trailer behind the car and it made me subject to the (at the time) Illinois 55 MPH truck/trailer speed limit instead of the 65 MPH automobile speed limit. Once you realize that you are going 10 MPH faster than the cars passing you if ticketed, you can sit back and enjoy the brief 2.5 hours that it takes to cross the Land of Lincoln (LOL) playing by their silly (at the time) rules.

Virginia would have been the nearest competitor to Ohio in terms of overzealous enforcement, and trying to make up time on I-95 lost in Washington, DC traffic back in the 1990's was a risky proposition. Keep in mind that radar detectors are illegal in Virginia and Connecticut. My recent drives down I-81 have been uneventful, and it appears that their state police have taken chill pills for the most part.

Arizona was supposedly the only state that could hold a candle to Ohio's bad reputation, and I do not even recall seeing a police car in the five times that I set tire in their wasteland of a state. Then again, a fair percentage of I-15 through Arizona (lies, damn lies, and statistics) has self-enforcing speed limits.....

Art,

I guess it varies depending on the route across a particular state. I.e. what happens on I70 may not reflect what happens on I80.

I regularly drive a lot of miles in VA, but on I81, not on I95. Speed enforcement there is not particularly onerous. In fact, there's a couple of signs like this:

Guess what the speed limit is there?

Yep. 70.

So the sign effectively says: "If you're no doing at least the speed limit, stay in the right-most lane!"

That was a screen capture from Google Maps. Yes, the desert southwest USA (which includes Phoenix and Las Vegas) has some pretty nice terrain and weather. The reason why I used Google for a picture is because I live 2,200 miles away from that location as the crow flies. If the same crow flew that distance plus another 800 miles in the opposite direction, it would be landing in Ireland to put the distance into perspective.....
