In VCDS, select the advanced measuring value for RPM and see if you get a reading with everything connected.

Advance Measuring Values (with crankshaft position sensor connected):
Engine RPM: 204/min
Crankshaft speed (RPM): 205.5/min
Camshaft RPM: 102/min
Fault code: None

Disconnect crankshaft position sensor connector and re-test
Engine RPM: 0/min
Crankshaft speed (RPM): 205.5/min
Camshaft RPM: 102/min
1 Fault code: Engine RPM PO322

Engine rpm is consistent in Advance Measuring Values at 200/min when cranking engine. At the same time (or any other time) 0 RPM in dash gauge. If no signal to dash gauge could this be an Engine Control Module issue and are there any ECM tests?

Do you have part number from the sensor and where was the sensor sourced from?

For sensors and most engine parts, I only use OEM supplier, if available, OEM if not. The replacement part was Bosch 0 261 210 383, purchased from Pelican parts. I only purchase from automotive parts stores, no third party Amazon sellers. The sensor I removed was Bosch, manufacture date 9/8/13 so likely the original sensor.

If you look at the original fault codes, they all occurred when engine temperature was 205°. Since I could not test the sensor at operating temperature, I decided to replace it since it's a $25 part and because of the issue noted above with ECM and 0 dash gauge RPM's.

I tested green wire from CPS to ECM, no issues. Inside the ECM housing was clean and looked new.

Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position ide channel. With engine not running ecm should still give you the last value it stored.

Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position 0.00, ECM did not retain this value. Camshaft tensioner is at 3 notches. If there is a failure for timing chain to skip a tooth when tensioner is at 3 notches then I'll do further testing.

Still plenty of unknowns, there can be many issues why the engine doesn't run, could be a timing issue, could be fueling or lack of fuel supply or a tuck fuel injector, could be lots of fuel in the sump possibly creating some mechanical issues due to the oil being thinned out too much.

Tested ignition and confirmed spark.

VCDS show fuel pressure from the fuel rail pressure test. When I inspected cylinders with an endoscope a while back, all were dry after cranking engine. Cylinder Disabling P130A fault code shuts off fuel injectors until root cause of misfires is fixed. There were 2 fault codes for 2 cylinders running rich so it would have to be 2 stuck fuel injectors which seems unlikely. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge and could get one to test fuel pressure if fuel rail pressure test reading is not trusted.

Oil fill level from VCDS is 70mm. The oil sample I removed wasn't thinned and felt like oil with 3,000 miles.

200 RPMS when cranking is too low should be showing 400rpms roughly. Something does not add up, If you have spark, fuel and correct timing engine should start. I would check mechanical timing at this point.

Agree with EuroX, low rpm.

Just to get things sorted, step by step.
Crank, no start X
Fuel present X
Rpm shown in cluster and Vcds X allthough low
Compression checked, maybe a little low but same on all X

Condition of fuel filter?

* Have you tested the spark, special tool for testing spark jump distance. (yes/no)
* Have you checked/measured crancking amp (yes/no)
* Low press (feeding pump) fuel pump running/working (yes/no)
* Wiring harness checked to/from: ecu to cop, ecu sensors ECU to injectors (yes/no)
* Have you done a cylinder leak test? (Yes/no)
* Checked ground and power directly with test lamp, NOT multimeter and/or scope, this time, this for testing circuits under load. Highly important test, very very often underrated. (Yes/no)
* Measure CR pressure with external gauge (yes/no)
* 12v to ECU checked (yes/no)
* 5v from ECU and 5V into sensors checked (yes/no)

Timing checked?

RPM is 0 in cluster.

RPM is 210 in VCDS Advance Measuring Values > Engine RPM

I ran analog gauge output test for RPM gauge and tested OK.

I would assume if no RPM while cranking on dash that it needs a crank position sensor or there is an issue with wiring for that sensor. Engine needs 3 things to run. All have been mentioned numerous times. I would recommend checking those 3 things mentioned.

Time to backprobe crank sensor at sensor and at ECU, scope time, jiihaa.
Your low rpm, any chance you are miss interpeting one of the camshaft sensors as a crankshaft signal?

The crankshaft sensor is new and wiring has been checked. The signal gets to Engine Control Module, VCDS reads: Advance Measuring Value > Engine RPM 214/min

The image shows Engine RPM while cranking engine. It remains at this setting as long as the engine is cranking.

Camshaft RPM is half crankshaft RPM so camshaft sensor has a correct value.

If no signal output from ECM for RPM gauge could this be an ECM failure? Looking at the VCDS scan, only 2 cylinders had fault codes for misfire. After those fault codes were recorded, I drove 45 minutes on the freeway with no issues. When I got off the freeway I drove for 10 minutes on streets, the engine was shaking at idle and was fine at any RPM above idle. Last code recorded was P130A Cylinder Disabling, that happened when I turned the engine off.

What was the CKP voltage measured at ECU?

Disconnect CKP, disconnect corresponding plug at ECU, use a multimeter, set to resistance, measure between each end of signal wire, then between each end og 5v feed wire. Reading between 0,01-1,5 ohms should be ok. Now measure one end and a proper ground (engine/battery negative/ground pin). Reading should be OL or infinity. If ok check between other end and good ground, result should be as above. If less than OL/infinity, first suspision is wire shorted to ground somewhere, find weakpoint and fix, this can be tricky to find, but puncture holes in plastic tube or iso tape is a good tell tale. Also discolour in wiring.

If you feel you inow ehat you are doing, this can be worth a try.
You need to have a circuit tester, like an older test light, not a voltmeter, try this, between sensor 5v and ground, now the circuit is loaded, and bad wiring would affect voltage to sensor and therefor light intencity from from bulb, compare to CMP 5v circuit, if bulb light seems weaker this is cause for consern, a voltmeter would not be as affected, and therefore not a valid test for CKP beeing fed with enough «juice»

If everything has been tested above, having ckp plug disconnected, and using backprobes or any
suitable means, try to bypass sensor original loomb. Ensure not to making any short circuits, find good ground and have a wire from here to sensor ground. Same with 5voltage wire, tap into a good 5volt ref and to CKP. Finally one from CKP to ECU, crank engine and observe tacho in cluster.

There have been a few cases where new sensor failed.

Just curious if you drove the vehicle with a flashing CEL for 45minutes? How was the wiring checked? what is the resistance on the wires? What sort of values in terms of voltage did you have on pins 1,2 and 3?

If you have verified and are sure you have fuel and spark time to check the timing.

How can you have spark and fuel, with no engine rpm i dash. If you are sure you have both present, you need to check timing thourougly, as mentioned by several many times over. Cause if timing is correct, spark and fuel (eith correct pressure) is present, you need to consider comms, ECU and faulty instrument cluster. Not heard this is common problem.

This is why all 3 thing need to be verified if you ask me. If no rpm on dash usually no spark is present. As mentioned previously all 3 things need to be checked.

I cranked the engine for 30 seconds and pumped the accelerator pedal, eventually the engine would try to start. When the engine would try to start the tack would move. Re-inspect the plugs and cylinders again, two were dry. The fuel injectors had intermittent issues.

Replace fuel injectors (Bosch) and cleanup carbon buildup.

Engine starts, idle is smooth and runs fine down the road.

Still has a problem, takes 10 seconds to start when cold or warm. When crank immediately after turn off warm engine, it starts after a few seconds. Prior to this issue, engine would start instantly, no hesitation.

First error code P2188 after the new fuel injectors installed, no check engine light. After driving a few miles, park, drive again, error code P0172 and then the check engine light came on. Using more fuel than it should and slight smell of fuel from the exhaust.

Also should mention, there is a slight noise at idle from the rear of the engine near the high pressure fuel pump. It had this issue before the engine failed. I planned on removing the pump and cam follower to inspect the parts at next service.

Change engine oil and no fuel in the oil.

I really appreciate all the input, here's some follow-up to questions for the record:

If the tach isn't moving safe to say its not seeing a signal from the crank position sensor.
Crank position sensor circuit is working, something else caused the tach not to move (0 RPM) when the engine was cranking.

Just curious if you drove the vehicle with a flashing CEL for 45minutes? How was the wiring checked? what is the resistance on the wires? What sort of values in terms of voltage did you have on pins 1,2 and 3?
No check engine light came on. It's on now and does not flash.

-12v and +5v was checked with a volt meter at the crankshaft position sensor connectors. The third (signal) wire was checked from sensor connector to ECM connector, I used both elements of an 1157 tail/brake light bulb to load the circuit and test if wire or connectors were faulty.

You can also check cam phase timing channel
Now that the engine starts, camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position -2.07

200 RPMS when cranking is too low should be showing 400rpms roughly.
Checked crankshaft speed (RPM) at start again with engine warm, 255/min. Engine has 83,000 miles and will get a starter rebuild soon.
