2014 Audi A5 Engine will not start

Drove 60 minutes on the freeway with no issues, at the first stop light engine shake at idle. Drove another 10 minutes and any speed above idle was smooth, idle continued to shake. Turn off engine and now will not start.

Not sure how to read this diagnostic, any advice on if this an indicator of something specific would be appreciated.

Pop all of your spark plugs out after a crank and see if they are wet with fuel. You may have an injector starting to leak or stick open.

I removed the spark plugs before any testing or attempt to start the engine. The car was parked for 2 days. Plugs show rich mixture.



Installed the spark plugs and crank engine, just a minor amount of fuel on two plugs.



Removed and clean spark plugs with brake cleaner and cleared fault codes, engine still will not start, starter cranks and engine does not fire. The last engine fault code was "Cylinder Disabling P130A", is there a reset for this fault or another test with VCDS to determine why it wont start?



Compression is 105 for each cylinder but my gauge is old. I'll test again with a new pressure gauge. Looking at the Bosch gauge unless someone has a better suggestion.

Car has been sitting for a month, family issue, now I need to troubleshoot the engine.

"P130A Cylinder Disabling" has turned off the fuel system. That makes it difficult to troubleshoot the fuel system. "P130A cannot be cleared until the failed component is replaced." Is there a troubleshooting procedure for this error? I would prefer troubleshooting vs replacing parts to figure out what's broken.

Tested ignition and spark is good. High pressure fuel pump tested good although it's a real basic test. Smell of fuel in the oil is not really there although my sense of smell is not the best. I viewed all cylinders with an endoscope, lots of carbon buildup there. Cam phase timing channel, not sure how to test that with engine not running. Timing chain is new so no stretch.

Starter cranks engine for 20 seconds, removed plugs and no fuel in any cylinder.

I ran Ross's fuel pressure test (

Is this a valid test for testing fuel pressure? I don't have a fuel pressure gauge and not sure if it would be a valid test if P130A disables fuel supply.

Is there any other test with VCDS that can be done to troubleshoot the engine for my error codes

"Cylinder 3 & 4 misfire"?

Silly question, but when cranking, does the rpm counter move at all, just look at instr panel when crancking?
Can you tell when chain was replaced, was it in this conjunction the failure arrived?
Any chance you can check crank and cam correlation?

You're referring to "Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position" to get cam/crank phase?
How do I get that when engine does not run?

105 is low compression. Fuel washed cylinder?
Compression test was on a cold engine. I'll test again once the engine is running with a new meter. All 4 cylinders were 105 (±2).
When I removed spark plugs 2 days after the engine stopped running, there was a small amount of fuel in all cylinders. Removed plugs a month later and no fuel.

RPM gauge does not move when cranking engine, stays at 0 RPM.
Timing chain and all relevant parts were replaced 2/2022.
I can check crank and cam at tdc and visual inspect the tensioner after all VCDS testing is done.
Tested camshaft phase position after replacing the timing chain and 6 months later, approx. -1.5.

If the tach isn't moving safe to say its not seeing a signal from the crank position sensor. Perhaps you have a sensor issue or a ecm issue.

While watching RPM's (engine speed) on a scanner crank for a good 30 sec's does scanner show engine RPM speed?

Cold engine or not 105 is low compression. Don't think it will ever run that low.

You have symptoms of failed cranshaft sensor, as mentioned above by others as well, a no crankshaft sensor signal will give a no start.
I recon if you replace sensor, the engine will start, buy an oem one, don’t go cheap.
I would first just check the voltage to sensor, and ground, but most likely sensor defective.
Don’t know your skills, but there are methods of giving the ecu a «fake/made» signal at sensor plug, and if your tachometer/Rpm in dash and/or via correct channel in VCDS shows an rpm, then the issue is sensor, not ECU, given you have tested positive for sensor voltage and ground.

Some models have a pickup sensor that generate its own voltage, typically if sensor only has 2wires, I am not quite sure, but think this is the case for your crank sensor in your car, but others can verify or correct me. A Hall type sensor has 3 wires, where one is voltage to sensor, one is sensor (and signal) ground and finally signal wire.
So cranking engine should give a small output reading in your multimeeter. Reading/checking wiring diagram will tell this, be aware of risk of short circuits when doing this. During cranking, signal should read 100-200mV, if I am not wrong (using the scope signal is much higher).
A Hall sensor is a digital sensor, and better observed with scope.

Crank/cam correlation test, using a 2 ch scope, you should have a rapid series of short to ground and a square waveform, just as the square rises (just after end at the end of a bottom square), there shall be a spacing in the rapid wave form. (Spaces is «missing/lack» of thoots).

Replaced the crankshaft position sensor, engine still does not run. Crankshaft position sensor has 3 wires: Gray/black -12v, Gray/yellow +5v and green signal. I didn't test sensor signal output because I replaced the sensor and it had power.

Compression tested 140 psi (cold) with a new gauge.

What would be the next step to troubleshoot 0 rpm's when cranking engine? Any way to test ECU with VCDS?

But how do you know that the signal is making its way to the ECM? You have to start testing, not just throwing parts. If you don’t have an oscilloscope, unplug the ECM and test the green wire between ECM plug-coupler and the sensor plug. Wiggle the harness to see if the resistance changes.

In VCDS, select the advanced measuring value for RPM and see if you get a reading with everything connected.

Does the tach move with new crank sensor installed? If not you need to trace wiring from sensor to ecm. To determine if you have a broken wire or possibly high resistance however I suspect you would have faults for that sensor.

Do you have part number from the sensor and where was the sensor sourced from?

Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position ide channel. With engine not running ecm should still give you the last value it stored.

Still plenty of unknowns, there can be many issues why the engine doesn't run, could be a timing issue, could be fueling or lack of fuel supply or a tuck fuel injector, could be lots of fuel in the sump possibly creating some mechanical issues due to the oil being thinned out too much. But this is really simple shit.

Check fuel supply.
Check if you have spark.
Compression you have you said 105 then 140. Even with 105psi the engine should run anything above 90psi the cylinder should still be ok.

You are either missing fuel, spark or engine is out of time.

110 compression is low. Now you got 140 (how long you crank over to get there?) sorry to tell you but 140 is still low.
If you have 12V on 1 wire I would assume that wire is good. Same for 5V wire. Test signal wire between sensor and ECU.
I don't understand why you won't answer basic question?
Where did you buy sensor?
What was the cost of Sensor?
Camshaft adaptation?
