G85 will not reset - Mk5 VW GTI w/DSG

Hi,

I have two faults showing 1. Steering wheel sensor defective and 2. Wheel sensor calibration not set. The steering wheel symbol is on and the ESP light (skidding car) is on too. I purchased a new steering wheel angle sensor and did the reset protocol and it has not worked. I have tried everything I can find on the internet several times over. One thing I want to try is to see if the WSS system (which is not throwing a code) is somehow intermittent but I do not know how to do that.

I am out of ideas. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick replyy No and yes. The steering wheel and skid symbols have been there awhile. A prior mechanic had failed to put in the key release solenoid on the ignition cylinder. I replaced that and got the code reset. The prior owner - my son - reports that the steering wheel and skid symbols have been on a while. I replaced the wheel angle sensor (G85) because VCDS threw a defective code. I read elsewhere here that I might need to transfer a code from the old G85?

I have tried all manner of efforts to reset the calibration.

Just to be clear: Was the scan you posted above done the replacement steering angle sensor already installed, or was it done with the old one still in there?

So you still have "Steering Angle Sensor -- Defective" in the ABS despite having replaced the sensor...?

What happens if you clear faults directly in the ABS module?

I don't suppose you have an older scan from before the replacement? Look in your scans sub-folder.

The first scan was the old one before the replacement I believe. The one I just sent is the new. I have tried numerous times to clear all faults, faultts in ABS, faults in Steering assist and they always pop back up. I am beginning to wonder if I got a faulty new sensor? I have checked and double-checked all the wiring steering wheel area. I even took the wheel off again and reset everything carefully after checking all the pins on the circuit board and connectorsd.

I figured out where the old scans were and here is the first one after I purchased VCDS.

I see here the steering angle tests okay. Perhaps I damaged something?

The one above is October 8, 22. In it I am getting no fault in 03-ABS but on October 13, 2022 long before I replced the steering wheel sensor I started getting the ABS code too.

Not just ABS, but the steering rack at address 44 too.

Are you getting any readings from it at all? Take a look at MVB 007 in the steering rack and MVB 004 in the ABS with the front wheels pointed dead ahead and the steering wheel centered. What value have you got? Turn the steering wheel some in each direction. What happens to the value?

Steering rack = MVB 007 - o.oo deg. - 0.0*.\/s - Calibration OK - Initialization Not ok

No change turning steering wheel.

ABS MVB 004 = 0.00 deg - lateral flucuates - rotation fluctuates - then N/A in last window.

Turning steering wheel does nothing.

When I repaired the lock cylinder putting in the keylock solenoid, the whole unit - circuit board, etc,, fell to the floor of the car. Seemed okay.

When you received the steering angle sensor, was it locked with the red disposable tab?
I had an issue where it was delivered to me without (used part though) and it was actually not set to the middle when I installed it.
I eventually counted the revolutions, found the middle and reinstalled the part and that enabled me to clear the fault.

I am back from traveling and want to dive back in. I did each of the things recommended above and got no value changes. It is as if it just does not see it. I did order a second new steering wheel angle sensor but am loath to take everything all apart unless I am convinced it has to be because of a defective unit. Thoughts and thanks!

Check if you mount correctly the steering angle sensor.
Put the wheels in the center position and then remove the steering wheel. Now check the steering angle sensor value and it should be near 0, if it's not rotate the steering clock spring until you get value near 0, then assemble steering wheel again.
After this it should let to calibrate G85.
