VW sporadic oil pressure red light flash

Anything else to blame for sporadic oil pressure red light than bad/ clogged balance shaft? I opened the oil pan found some remaining sealant and little plastic. Is it a sign of bad balance shafts?

I did timing chain and cylinder head rebuilt work but never opened and inspect the balance shafts.

Could it be the balance shaft tensioner I did not replace? The oil warning sensor is clean and no oil in the connector. mann oil filter and 5w30 full synthetic oil in there.
It usually happens after the car driven for long with AC specially and when you slow down and stop then try to accelerate again.
One more thing, the top of the engine feels super super hot, but there is no overheating and coolant level is at right level. No engine light on nor error code when scanning with ross tech cable

The car is a 2012 vw eos cbfa engine

Don't know about your engine but my first port of call for low oil pressure warning would be to check the pressure sensor is working correctly - wouldn't be the first time one failed and a lot easier/cheaper than any engine work.

If that checks out then measure the actual pressure.

I agree with your approach. I inspected the switch no sign of failure. Yesterday injector stopped so I cannot run tests atm, but for sure I will do actual pressure check and switch replacement when i get injector installed

I do not agree on 'they are not all the same' specially when it comes to 2012 all have CBFA engine, but I will get you the scan anyway as soon as I can. Cheers

... but they may not all have the same hardware and software versions of the ECUs - and that is probably even more important to know than the hardware type of the physical engine.

It feels like - no scan no help

I am with you on sealant remain, check oil pump clogs. I took off the oil pan, the screen was not dirty but the bottom of the pane had sealant remaining. Oil seems moving up, but top if the engine gets super hot ( no ober heat). I am afraid the oil not getting to bottom quick hence there is low pressure when the oil pump push oil up again. Agre on this?

I removed the oil cap when the engine was running, lots of oil came out. It felt like it was a pool of oil tye top of the engine. If this is the issue, do you think there is passage I can clean after removing the cylinder head?

I do not have the gauge but i purchased oil pressure switch. already in the post. I will replace that since its easier. Another question, should I change the balance shaft tensioner too? I did not replace that when I did the timing chain work. Finally, any reason the top part of the engine gets super warm + when I removed the cap it seemed there were lots of oil on the top part still ( could it be the drainage clogged, oil does not go down hence low pressure)?

I have not. Oil level is correct, no smoke from the tail pipe and crank very well . I do not think the cylinders are having issue.do you?

Check the pressure with the proper VW tool https://vw.snapon.com/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?itemid=2050123 or make own or get a basic gauge from one of the big box auto parts store and use that.

Homemade one is just oil pressure gauge with fittings to be able to connect Vw sensor/switch. Just need to run a clamped on ground wire to gauge set and connect harness plug or jump wire/s to sensor/switch. Vw oil pressure fitting are M10 x1.0 so keep that in mind when you build or buy a basic gauge.

Hi there,

Thank you for posting the Auto-Scan!

If you wish to properly diagnose the concern, you will need to invest in the proper tools.

Just like you have invested in the Ross-Tech VCDS tool, a good quality oil pressure gauge is needed to check and be able to tell us what oil pressure you have and to see if it is within specifications.

With that said, here is my 'Low oil pressure' check list:
- Verify the correct oil and filter (oil weight, type and quality and quantity)
- Verify the oil pressure switch, wiring and connections are correct.
- Check oil pressure

If oil pressure is too low, check the oil pump pick-up screen.

If screen is okay, the factory repair manual will tell you you will need to replace the oil pump as the next step.

You can try that if you want, however I would want to wait first and check some other things before I throw good money into a questionable engine.

When the oil pan is down when checking the oil screen, I will also consider checking the crankshaft bearing clearances, just to make sure you are not looking at some major engine work. See the Official Factory Repair Information on how to perform these checks.

If the bearings clearances and the bearings/crank looks okay, then maybe you need an oil pump. You can remove it and inspect that too.

The reason why I suggest the above is because I have seen when replacing balance shafts and the little screens, it did not fix the oil pressure concerns on this type of engine. Owner did not want to spend any more money and ran thicker oil, 10w40 mix ed with 20w50. and that actually helped!

As far as balance shafts, the little screens can get dirty and cause concerns, the only way you can tell is by removing them and inspecting them. And oh, by the way... yeah, more special tools needed!


I stopped keeping track of how much I have spent buying tools, it is a never ending process, especially if you fix your own vehicles and stuff.


Let us know the oil pressure readings are!

oil pressure must be between 2.0 and 4.5 bar (29 to 65.26
