I am wondering if an issue I have is possibly caused by the battery voltage being too low. I have fitted a new genuine VAG battery but the fault I have with the boot motors does not occur when the battery is freshly charged or on on a trickle charger.

does not occur when the battery is freshly charged, or on a trickle charger. Is there any way to adjust the voltage at which the battery is maintained, or is that simply down to the battery chemistry?

Did you code in the new battery correctly?

What is this "fault with the boot motors"? Perhaps I'm blind, but I don't see such a fault there.

The car has no control over the battery's voltage when the engine isn't running. Do you perhaps have an excessive draw with the car shut down? How low does the battery voltage drop and over what period of time does this happen?

Sorry, oh great one, I didn't know I had to code the battery. I am just a stupid retired aeronautical engineer that is used to being told what to do by the makers! As you said, there is no fault code. Bentley had the car for about a month to sort this problem. They replaced the boot motors, boot seal and god knows what else - gave me a F off huge bill and didn't sort it as two days later it was the same. Scenario - Car is fully charged - Press button - boot opens. Wait two days -boot unlocks but doesn't open. I have tried everything I can think of. Although the analyser shows no fault, I think the issue may lay in the boot opening control unit. I have sourced a new one, but although it accepted the codes, it reports that there are no basic settings. This evening I stumbled upon something relating to basic setting in VCDS, but can't locate that as yet. Perhaps if I could reset the basic settings in the module, I may be able to move forward. I have been into the Basic Settings menu - set opening boot lid angle, but it doesn't respond with the new module, though the old one does respond and reports Completed Satisfactorily. Ideas?

Yeah, you should. 19-CAN Gateway has Adaptation Channels for Serial Number, Manufacturer, and Size (in Amp-Hours). In fact, it seems to have this for two batteries, but I don't know whether your car actually has two?

What I find a bit strange is that there I don't see a channel for battery type or technology. EFF vs. AGM and so on.

In any case, coding the battery tells the car that you've installed a new one, and getting the characteristics right (particularly the size) will influence how it charges while the engine is running.

Have you got a volt meter? How much has the battery voltage dropped by then?

Thanks Uve. I wii code the batteries. I have every kind of meter but I don’t believe the voltage is dropping excessively. Returning to the module, any idea as to why the new module says “No basic settings”? When I open up the drop down menu in Basic Settings and select “Set lid opening angle“ or something like that, the boot fails to respond to the open button and the module doesn’t respond further and reports “No basic settings”. The old module does go through the setting procedure and reports success. I am confused.

You need to keep the car on a maintenance charger.

Make sure you lock the car when you leave it to help conserve the battery for as long as possible.

Two days is a little short, but the boot lock is one of the first things to shut down as the voltage drops.
Check for current drain by removing fuses.
What type battery did you fit? AGM?

To be honest, they are a real pain in the arse. Can you hear the motor trying but does not lift it? Starts to lift it but then locks itself again?

Stiff hinges are the auto boot open's biggest downfall. Lack of lubrication by main dealers / Bentley. Make sure all the hinge pivots are rust free and well lubricated. This can mean opening and closing the boot many times. 50 or more some times. And going re-visiting it a few days in a row. (Do the bonnet ones as well) A lithium spray grease works well.

Believe it or not, this is now resolved. By way of history, the car first started exhibiting this problem about four years ago. It went into the local Bentley dealer and was there for two weeks! They said they had had great difficulty in finding the fault and had, in the end, replaced both boot motors, the lift struts and the boot seal and reset the boot module - and it was now fine.

Or so it seemed for a few days, when I came to open the boot, after the car had been unused for a couple of days. As I was able to open the boot after a couple of presses, I lived with it, until it became a real issue again.

When the car had been sitting for a few days, it would not open unless the button was pressed a number of times. After that, it would seem OK for a while. Thinking it could be a voltage issue, I left the trickle charger connected and then the boot works. Remove the trickle charger and it would fail, as before. Confused!! I fitted a new genuine VAG battery and, as I had acquired a VCDS, reset the boot settings.

When the boot failed to operate, it would issue a fault code for the opening module. I managed to buy a new boot opening module, but was unable to get it to accept basic settings, even after the coding had been copied across. So I refitted the old one.

Then I sat down and thought "What would I have done if presented with this problem, before it went into Bentley?" I waited till the car was well and truly cold and had been sitting without the charger, for some days. I put some very light upward pressure under the lid and pressed the the badge button. The boot worked just fine. I repeated this the next morning. Again, it worked.

So - ignoring the "fact" that the lift struts had been replaced by the dealer, I located some replacements from a company in Germany that manufactures struts for VAG. They were less than a quarter of the Bentley price, so worth the risk.

The boot now works first time, every time. So did Bentley actually replace the struts? I will probably never know. But at least I now have a fully functioning Boot. The fact that the boot would open when on the trickle charger for a few hours was probably down to the added boost given to the motors by the additional voltage? But I'm unsure about that, as starting the engine before trying the boot didn't seem to help.

Thanks to everyone who tried to assist me with this. But sometimes, it may be wiser to think what we would have done before we had all the electronic gizmos!
