I am trying to get my 2003 jetta GLI ready to pass smog, I know that all the monitors are able to get ready except the SAI.
We found out that it was cause the car was running lean due to old 02 sensors so we changed them out and reset the DTCs and now im able to get the SAI to run a test in the basic settings, but whenever i try to use the set readiness it appears blank.
the image i attached shows what happens when i get to the SAI step in the set readiness.

Is the software in the ECU in this car stock or has it been "tuned"?

What happens if you go to Basic Settings group 229 manually?

As far as i know the ECU is stock considering my dad liked to buy parts from VW themselves
I haven't tried to run group 229 since we changed the 02 sensors, thought that was for a different system. But ill try it when I get home

try going into basic settings , Enter group 077 and hit [GO] . You may need to press and hold the brake pedal and gas pedal to initiate the test. Once completed, do the same with group 078.

So i finally got around to this again after being a little discouraged, but running basic settings group 229 produces a lot of fluctuation at first but once its done, field one shows 124.2%,field two shows 6.3%, field three shows 0.0%, and field four shows 00000100

Im still able to run both basic settings group 077 and 078 which starts the SAI test but everytime it ends with "Test Off"

I checked the air valve and had to replace what im pretty sure was a vaccume tube since he old one had holes in it and now i don't know where to go again.

If it isn't tuned I recall Vr6 engine controllers from this era being difficult in regards to SAI when:

* There was a MAF issue.
* The brake pedal wasn't held when groups such as 077 and 078 were enabled.

If there aren't any fuel trim DTCs and the Engine controller is fault-free after 10 - 20 miles of driving I'd repeat Basic Settings 077 and 078 but hold the brake pedal this time. If that doesn't flip the self tests to Test On followed by Sys OK you might need to put more miles on it so see which (if any) faults return naturally. Additionally, two test drives involving cold starts should allow that readiness bit to flip to passed if everything is OK.

It can be very difficult to get the SAI to fire up, I was doing a Skoda Fabia 1.4 TFSI today and it would not fire up no matter what. I worked through the menu backwards and it did...

given your location is in the 90f+ temps, i would also try running the basic settings early in the morning, or late at night when the air temps are a lot cooler.

No the car is still

VCDS is showing that there is a fault code, which was caused by me, but its the throttle adaption which i have fixed but the code is still there, other than that there are no codes even with the car being driven a fair amount. I Haven't thought about holding break pedal down when i run the test so ill probably do that tonight

Bottom of the list upwards
Exactly! When things don't work out as per the official steps you can mix and match. Although this is a 1.8T it is from the same Mk4/B5 era and someone in the comments added the old-school list (i.e. 070, 071, 077, etc) in plain text:

Also, I would clear all of the faults and adapt the TBA to make sure that isn't an actual problem.

If fuel trims/MAF issues are suspect this page should help:

I was doing a Skoda Fabia 1.4 TFSI today and it would not fire up no matter what.

When he picked it up he informed me it had an aftermarket cat fitted a month ago and he had been driving it for two weeks running like a bag of shit, I told him he would be back to have a genuine cat fitted as aftermarket cats fail after 3 misfires! He also told me that the Skoda dealer had told him there was a wiring fault but could not find it, the MAP sensor in question is on top of the inlet manifold under your nose! Dealers, "all the gear but no idea"

I adapted the TBA and it says "sys ok", just the fault code hasn't cleared, would the code being there cause an issue?
This is my dads car and he doesn't like to clear the codes when all the monitors are ready, it just the SAI monitor that isn't ready yet.

Some codes don't clear themselves but need to be manually cleared.

If when you clear codes they don't come back then the cause is not there at that moment, so some driving is usually a good idea to see if they come back in use.
