I have a 2003 Passat V-6 with about 110,000. It runs great but randomly it won't start. It cranks and turns over fine but don't seem to be firing. If I try over and over enough times it starts. I replaced the coil pack with an aftermarket one. It ran better than ever and started every time for about two weeks then went back to random no start. . I was asked if I had a VCDS to scan it. I didn't so I ordered one. It gives me these codes...

P3081-35-00

17801 Ignition Coil Power Output 1
P1393-35-00 Electrical Malfunction

17802 Ignition Coil Power Output 2
P1394-35-00 Electrical Malfunction

17803 Ignition Coil Power Output 3

Where do I start? Temp sender? Another coil pack??

Greetings and Welcome and thanks for the information, but......, You need to post a complete and unedited Auto-Scan. Please see the Blue tool bar at the top of this page "How-To" , click on it and a pull down menu will display, choose How to post a Auto-Scan. I would. But I suspect there's also an issue with the ignition circuitry for bank 1 of your engine that will need to be addressed.

i would suspect a bad grounding point ? I'm not sure if on this engine the grounding point is connected to all six packs...perhaps there is 1 ground point for a bank and another for bank 2 ?
You also need to check your number 2 lambda sensor ..either is burned or have bad wiring/connector problem.

If you think the engine temp sender is the bad boy, you can unplug it and try to start if u see any change.

I have been struggling trying to install the new temp sensor since Sunday. I don't know what I'm doing wrong....I cannot get it down far enough for the clip to grab it. I haven't had a car for days now.

I suspect shit quality coil or loose ground for coil. Were the wires checked going to the plugs?? IIRC this engine does not have COP unless I am mistaken. I would be checking wires to plugs, ground for coil and of course suspect very low quality coil being the issue.

Check the basic's first doesn't have to be a vw coil but I would get one from a reputable vendor not from amazon.
