I'm not sure on the eGolf side, or on the switching between car types. But the switching between petrol and diesel doesn't seem to be a concern. When I connected the AID to my car it popped up with diesel appropriate tachometer. At the time the guide I was following was somebody with an all track, and I bought the same part number.

Isn't there an option in ODIS-E that will only let a file be flashed to a module for which it is appropriate? I feel like I had to untick that "check box" in order to flash different firmware to my sound actor module.

I suppose I could probably open the ODX in notepad or something in see what's in there, maybe that will tell me before I spend 8 hours bricking my cluster 😂

For the tachometer, it's the tube_version..
The Passat cluster does not let me change the version, but the E-golf does, but nothing happens..

I should have been more clear... by "appropriate tachometer" I mean with proper maximum RPM for a diesel. As far as tube version I can change that to various styles (Golf, Alltrack, GTi, Golf R, etc.) via coding.

I have:
Passat 3G0920791C 3195 407 12.12.2017
E-Golf 5G1920795 2170 409 28.03.2017

Think I´ll try the Passat cluster today and see what´s possible..

No DATASET for AID, right?

This is where I saw that flash from A to B...

@downtime Do you suppose that the "Hardware Version" would present a problem? Looking at the link, the hardware part number is the same.

They went Index A 3193 to Index B 4191, so higher Index and SW version.
It might work or it might not. I know some clusters have been upgraded from A to B but it’s not so that all are the same. 3G0/5G1/5F0/5NA, they’re all a bit different.

No dataset in AID. Some passat gte clusters are flashed with normal passat sw and it works fine.

And the cluster needs to be flashed in car or in a bench with all necessary stuff so that immo is not on. Otherwise the flashing does not work.
And in car flash, make sure you have good battery charger connected because the flashing takes several hours.

Gotcha... Except for HW Version (409 for me, 407 in the link) all else looks the same. I'll probably risk it 😂.

Nobody here has any files, I guess

The Golf now has a fully working Passat AID.
The car pic option is Arteon, 2x Passat wagon and Passat sedan (limo)..

The tacho changed by just plugging it in (made the Odis-swap, so it might not just be magic) and @ 100km/h the GPS shows 96km/h.

When I changed display depiction (before connected to car) there were dots, but now it's not. Now in version 2 as I read someplace that's the setting for AID to show map and it works.

Gotcha, the only thing I have is the same one you have... VW_FL_5G1920791B_4191_S.odx.

I do wish I had the .frf version so I could flash from USB/SD... I'm not that concerned with it taking a long time although if fuzzy memory serves I read somewhere it's a bit quicker than ODIS.

It should be a lot faster. Tens of minutes instead of hours what it takes via OBD.

That's not what I want to hear since I have no way to get that version 😂. I even looked around about converting but all I could find is the ability to go from FRF to ODX, not the other way.

@downtime Well, had an impulsive moment and decided what the heck? I'll try and update my dash, what could go wrong

The only example I had was from the previously linked drive2 post, they went Index A 3193 to Index B 4191 (HW Version 407)
A few differences... I'm going from Index A 3197 to Index B 4191 (My dash is HW Version 409)

Anyway... I did it the dumbest way possible. I run a Braille Lithium battery in my car. Have had exactly zero problems with it (granted it does get cold where I live) but it has limited standby power (not that one should make a habit of flashing anything without a tender connected, even without a Lithium battery). Anyway, connected the Lithium battery charger and started the flash. I was periodically checking for the first 2-3 hours. Battery voltage was at 12.9+, the Lithium charger gets the battery to 13.5ish then settles right around 13.

All looked good, aside from the math suggesting the flash would take, you guessed it, about 9 hours. I continue on with my day, eventually deciding to go get lunch. Down to the garage only to see the DRL's are off (and so is everything else in the car). Oh boy! Check the battery, it's at 8.x something. ODIS is unhappy, the charger is unhappy, I'm unhappy. I don't know what happened with the charger, it was not warm/hot to the touch so I don't think it overheated. My best guess is some logic says that after xx amount of time if correct voltage hasn't been achieved there is a problem, and it went to a failsafe mode. I turned it off then back on, it brought the battery up to 12.5 volts within minutes (as expected).

Figure what I'll turn the key ON... AID is blank as expected given the interrupted update, and the unexpectedly the infotainment screen is just showing a date of 01.01.1970

Soooo... disaster having motivated me beyond my laziness, I pull out the dash and connect it to my bench setup. OBVIOUSLY, this is where I should have tried to flash it in the first place, but remember, LAZINESS. Anyway, add 17 to the install list of the gateway that's on my bench. ODIS can't see it, VCDS can't see it, OBDEleven can't see it... cool cool cool. Back into ODIS, uncheck the box (on the option name I can't remember) that lets you flash at your own risk. It jumps to 10% pretty quick (as it did in the car) and then I sweat for several minutes waiting for 11%.

About 5 hours later it's at 90% and I'm feeling okay, I guess. Then it jumps to 100%, gives me the success message and is asking if I want to clear DTC's (as usual). The dash is alive, beeping like mad because there's nothing connected to it except a gateway and BCM. But after all it's complaining I see the Welcome message with my Driving Profile name :D.

Take it to the car, plug it in, car starts up... all is well that ends well... but man alive that was the dumbest way to do something that had a good chance of not working anyway!

As an aside, the "VIEW" button on my Mk8 wheel now works, haha.

^ Yes, the AID flash via CAN is SLOW. But the SD card updates are very very rare to find unless you have access to VAG DSS.

Bench flash by the way does not work if CP is active on the dash. You need to first remove the CP on the car and then when you put it to bench it should NOT trigger the CP as it does not "detect" a VIN change as there's nothing to check it against.

I didn't know that about CP. But it's not a new dash. It has been in my car for the last 30k. It was completely dead when I put it on the bench, not recognized at all but I was able to "force" flash it.

All I had make it to the bench was the dash, BCM, and the gateway of course. So just like you said, there was nothing to trigger CP. Back in the car and working like I never screwed it up in the first place 😂.

Yes, that's why it worked because it was already adapted to your car and the bench alone does not usually trigger CP. Only when you put it to another car or you have a complete bench with engine ECU with different VIN

If there is, no one is telling where :) VW is not very good in providing change logs what have changed in the software. So answer is no
