Hello all, I have strange issue that I cannot seem to get any good help on. This is a 2009 Audi A6 3.0T V-6 that is in really pretty good shape, minus one major problem.... it's always dead. After a day or two, the voltage on the battery will drop as low as 9V requiring a charge (after climbing into the trunk to pop the damn latch.)

This issue has been happening for over 6 months now and I have thrown everything, including the kitchen sink at it. Below is a laundry list of things that we have tried to resolve the issue. Any further suggestions would be very welcomed at this point.
  • New battery installed and configured
  • Tested each fuse with a multimeter for unusual voltage
  • Removed the battery from the keyfob during a series long tests, after reading that someone found theirs was randomly checking in overnight
  • Tested voltage with multimeter connected in series with the battery overnight
  • Discovered that the Navigation DVD receiver in the trunk always has a red LED indicator on even after it appears to have gone into deep sleep. Therefore, we have tested it for days without that fuse and the problem continues
  • Left it with our local Audi dealer for 3 months and they found zero issues that could be the culprit. They had a few hunches and some suggestions to fix it but nothing ever has.
  • The last thing the dealer tried was replacing the heater control unit. They said they had no scientific proof why that might help, but it 100% fixed two other Audi's of this generation, with this similar elusive problem.
I have not pulled a recent auto-scan since getting it back from the shop, but prior to that, the only issue reported was that of the HomeLink garage door opener was not working.

I am about to run this car into the nearest lake if I cannot come up something that keeps it from dyeing ever couple days.

Thoughts?

Auto scan please. Also is there any aftermarket equipment installed in the vehicle like dash cam, or any sort of retrofit?? Also does this vehicle have a sunroof?? is the bluetooth working??

Thank you. I will run a new auto scan tomorrow AM and post it. I believe it is completely stock with nothing retro fitted, but I have only owned about 8 months. It does have a sun roof that seems to work just fine. And the Bluetooth connects to my iPhone for hands free calling ok.

I think Auto scan if your best bet. I still can't believe a audi dealer cannot figure this simple issue out. Its gonna be time to perform a draw test and start pulling fuses.

As an electrical guy, if this were mine to resolve, I would use a clamp on ammeter to monitor current in the vehicle flowing from the positive terminal. Yep we want to see it all!

I would start by removing every fuse. The ammeter should show 0 draw. If it doesn't then you have a short somewhere that needs to be found.

Then I would begin adding fuses and powering control modules one at a time. Each time I did this, I would let the vehicle sit to be sure the module went to sleep. Eventually, I would expect to find a module that draws significant current and does not shut down. That would then tell me the module I need to go investigate.

Mind, I know that doing things this way will confuse the crap out of all the electronics in the car. It will take a lot of work to get everything back on line and calibrated. But frankly, unless the autoscan points to a module that needs investigating, I don't think there is another way to go at this. Parasitic draws are never easy to resolve.

That's my 2 cents.. its worth what you pay! ;)

Open all the doors hood and trunk and latch all the latches. Let it go to sleep and watch the multi meter or whatever your using to measure draw. Then start pulling fuses one by one and watch for the draw to disappear. A draw of 0.030ma is acceptable on these cars.

All above great suggestions! Here is another.

I had a relay stuck and I actually found it somewhat by accident: it was very warm all the time! So, there are many ways to test Relays, but a couple of quick ways is temperature , either with a instrument or try by touch (if it's closed and drawing, it will be nice and warm!) . Place a battery charger on the car and have a look , and touch, be sure all accessories are off. You may even be able to feel it humming. Two days, or so is quite a draw (for that battery).

Here is another weird one I once had: check all the 12V outlets "cigarette lighters" etc. and be sure a coin, staple, paper clip is not in the socket! :D

A FLIR camera is always a great tool to test or look for possible issues. However not cheap for the average consumer, however handy for a number of things and In my opinion something every homeowner should have either way.

I had this on a 2007 Audi A4, siren dead internal battery and still drawing power to recharged it.
Once I disconnected the siren the power drain ceased.
Souriau, thank you. Did you disconnect the siren horn itself under the hood or is there a fuse? I don't remember seeing one for the latter.

You can buy a small tester made by Sealey tools and possibly others that has probes you use to touch the 2 point on the fuse without having to remove the fuse itself and then wake the module back up when its reinserted. Really useful tool. Displays shows current draw across the fuse.

I think I finally have something tangible to troubleshoot now. After letting the car sit with everything powered down (the doors, trunk and hood open, but all latched) for 3 hours, I tested each fuse.

I found in the passenger-side top-black fuse panel that #10 (10A) still registered 6mV and #12 (5A) was at 10mV. From my calculations using the matrix in the video, that totals about a 2A draw.

Both #10 and #12 are listed as Communication on the inside of the fuse compartment. But Google says #10 is Communication/MMI.

I am thinking about trying the loopback trick on the Sirius receiver next but I will have to get one ordered.

I might suggest consulting a proper wiring diagram for your specific car to determine exactly what gets power from those fuses.

Sounds like this tool is a volt meter that does the Ohm's Law arithmetic for you?

Attached is a voltage drop chart calculator when using a DVOM to find a draw, chart comes in handy you can find out how much draw you have based on Mv readings taken with the DVOM. Comes in handy when you don't have a amp clamp. As far as your draw goes, I don't think that's your issue. According to what I see those fuses are always powered by terminal 30(aka always hot). I think you need to look else where, there is a few fuse panels in this vehicle including in the trunk and 2 ebox panels under the hood as well. Attached is also what the fuses power but as you can see it looks like 1 fuse is a higher value than listed perhaps there's something there if correct fuse is installed and the fuse pops perhaps you have a bad module?? J794 is the 5F module, these are notorious for going bad as well as staying on if anything is spilled on E380 aka mmi control buttons. If those buttons are sticking expect a draw as the 5F will never go to sleep. The other fuse shows dvd player and cd changer depending on equipment, chances are you have cd changer in glovebox, this is only on most bus iirc so could be related and not going to sleep but again terminal 30 is always powered. I would put the right fuse in, inspect the mmi buttons or possibly unplug and retest. If nothing is found you need to search further.

I suspect possibly something with the MMI system causing a draw but anything is possible. I have seen satellite radio modules cause as draw even amps as well which is common but again anything is possible, hell I've seen a telephone module filled with water in the drivers floor depending on model year cause a draw as well.

Eurox, I do have a AC/DC amp clamp. It has been really handy.

Thank you so much for all the great ideas. I will get that fuse corrected ASAP.

Regarding the head unit of mmi, there are 2 buttons that are super sticky.

Sounds like I have some work to do today. I will post back soon. Thanks again.
