Hello. Have an 03 Audi A4 and keep getting error code for implausible engine speed sensor. Put in a new Bosch one and works for a bit but then starts revvibg and then sets the code off again. Once the code goes back on. The car normally just cranks and won’t start. I can leave it sit for a while and then will start but same error comes back again. Testes the sensor by itself and thought it should it have some resistance but this one doesn’t . What are the chances or being a bad sensor? Any help would be great.

We need you to post an Auto-Scan so we can see exactly what's being reported and how your A4 is equipped & configured.

The above is essentially illegible since you passed it through some software (I have no idea what) that stripped all the white space and newlines.

check wires at plug , is the Bosch genuine or is it counterfeit Bosch ? It could be also a bad camshaft sensor which gives bad readings when it gets hot. What's your rpm value in real time when the car doesn't start ? can you see values ? 200-300 rpms ?

Did you change the sensor in the block or the sensor on the cylinder head. Your sensor G28 is located on the block. Was a factory part installed? or china copy?? There are many known Bosch counterfeits known to exist. Does the tach move when cranking?? If tach moves I suspect crank sensor is good, but that all depends on quality of sensor and whether its a original unit and not some chinesium garbage.

I think it might be a wiring issue but I will try again tomorrow for sure. It seems to be an authentic Bosch part as it stamped with Bosch info and part number and came in Bosch box. But I’m guessing that could all be faked. I bought it from Amazon but I guess anyone could sell fake parts and make them look authentic. I guess there is no way to guarantee thats it’s not fake part no matter who the seller is.

If you get your parts from a reputable source like a dealership, or authorzied vendor or reseller there is no way its a fake. Everything else most likely chinese shit. That being said anything purchased from amazon for rock bottom prices is most likely chinese shit. That being said, I would get a factory part or start tracing wiring if you think its a wiring issue however chinese shit never works not when it comes to sensors and important bits to keep these cars running.

Sensor should have a resistance value when checking.

I just realized this is a AVK convertible. Sensor should be on the transmission housing IIRC. between pins 1 and 3 you should have no more than 1.5ohms.

P0321Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Range/Performance
Check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28-.
Comparison of counted teeth and number of teeth +/- 1 tooth---0.1 Sec
2 DCY

Use only gold-plated terminals when servicing terminals in the electrical harness connector of the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28-.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
Multimeter.
Test requirements
The Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) - J220- fuses OK.
Battery voltage at least 12.5 volts.
All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster, switched off.
Vehicles with automatic transmission, shift selector lever into position “P” or “N”.
A/C switched off.
Ground (GND) connections between engine/transmission/chassis OK.
Ignition switched off.
Test procedure
Perform a preliminary check to verify the customers complaint.
Start diagnosis
The Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- detects RPM and reference marks. Without an engine speed signal, the engine will not start. If the engine speed signal fails while the engine is running, the engine will stop immediately.
Function test
Connect the scan tool.
Switch the ignition on.
Using the scan tool, check the engine speed:
Diagnostic textSpecified value
Engine rotations per minute (RPM)Idle speed

End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
If the specified value was not obtained:
Checking internal resistance
Disconnect the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- electrical harness connector .
Using a multimeter, check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- terminals 2 to 3 for resistance.
Specified value: 0.7 to 1000 kO
Check Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- terminals 1 to 2 and 1 to 3 for short circuits.
Specified value: 8 (infinity)
If any of the specified values are not obtained:
Replace the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- . Refer to Fuel Injection and Ignition Repair Manual
If the specified values are obtained:
Checking wiring
If the manufacturers test box is being used, perform the following step.
Install the Adapter Cable (121-pin) -VAG1598/31-. Refer to Fuel Injection and Ignition Repair Manual
If the manufacturers test box is not being used, perform the following step.
Remove the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. Refer to .
M24-0431
Using a Multimeter, check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- electrical harness connector terminals to the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- electrical harness connector T121 terminals for resistance.

382

Specified value: 1.5 O Max.
If the specification was not obtained:
Check the wiring for an open circuit, short circuit to each other, Battery (+), and Ground (GND).
Check the electrical harness connector for damage, corrosion, loose or broken terminals.
If necessary, repair the faulty wiring connection.
If no malfunction is detected in the wiring:
Remove the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- and check the sensor wheel for proper seating, damage and run-out. Refer to Fuel Injection and Ignition Repair Manual
If the sensor wheel is OK:
Erase the DTC memory.
Perform a road test to verify repair.
If the DTC does not return:
Repair complete, Generate readiness code.
End diagnosis.
If the DTC does return and no malfunction is detected in the wiring and the voltage supply was not OK:
Replace the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.
Assembly is performed in the reverse of the removal.
Final procedures
After the repair work, the following work steps must be performed in the following sequence:
1 -Check the DTC memory.
2 -If necessary, erase the DTC memory.
3 -If the DTC memory was erased, generate readiness code.
End diagnosis.

I guess I should not be surprised the Chinese make exact fakes with everything looking the same including the packaging and the name on the part itself.

Ok. Thanks for the info. Does it always have to be Bosch parts? I see Delphi and facet have sensors for this car for sale in germanautoparts.com
