Hello to everyone. I am about to do a little project, swapping half MFD to full MFD in VW Golf MK5 2005. I know this cannot be done with VCDS, but I have other tools for that. The only donor tacho I can get now (and I did not buy it yet, because I am not sure if it will work) is from the car with DSG transmission, but my car is equipped with manual transmission. In the lower part of the donor tacho (picture 2.jpg from the web) is the DSG gear shift indicator. Is there any way to get rid of it to look like in picture 1.jpg? I attached VCDS log from the car with current (half MFD).

Thanks for your help!

Primoz

Standard procedure would be to determine if that cluster was (ever) equipped with manual transmissions. In earlier days, automatic transmission models had instrument clusters with different firmware/parametrization. If that can be ruled out, coding is the next step but I am reasonably certain back in those days, it was a different cluster for manual transmission models.

Thanks for your answer... is there any way to find out if the tacho was intended for automatic/manual transmission on the sticker on the backside? I found some of them on the scrapyard, where noone declares if it comes from the car with manual or automatic transmission. And the second question, let's assume both automatic and manual transmission tacho's have the same firmware. What is the proper way to code out the gear shif indicator? Thanks!

Regards

I've not yet seen a MK5 cluster that can't do both (at least for the Immo4A versions). I've swapped clusters in my cars and have used auto versions in my manual car - the gear indicator doesn't show once everything is matched and coded etc. I can't recall if the cluster actually needs coding for the indicator/trans type - I'm somewhat sure it uses what's coded in the gateway and only shows the display when the gateway is coded for auto. It certainly wasn't difficult.

8 = km/h (9 = MPH)
5 = low version (6 = mid, 7 = high)
1 = generation: I think there are LIN differences? regarding multifunction steering wheel capabilty and other changes that can affect compatibility. 4 and up are Immo4C, I can't recall 3 - I think it 4C, but not sure right now.

You do have to make sure the part numbers are compatible for other issues. Your 1K0 920 851 B would be best replaced with a 1K0 920 871 *, making sure you have a diesel rev counter and suitable spedometer range, which is determined by the letter... but the letter for one part number may be totally different to another part number, even though it's the same specs, i.e. Suffix "B" may be a diesel, 220km/h for one part number, but a petrol 260km/h for a different numbered part...

I suspect you could also "move up" to a slightly newer 1K0 920 872 *, but you will NOT be able to easily use an 874 version and I think not an 873 either (the 4 uses Immo4C and I'm pretty sure the 3 is too. Your cluster is 4A).

When you're extracting the SKC from you old cluster, DO NOT be tempted to fiddle with anything else - you want to make sure you have a functional cluster before you run a risk of bricking the only one that works.

I have a shelf in my Barn with 5 or 6 clusters that all function in my car :D But also one that is 100% bricked :facepalm:

Yes, Mk5 tachos are the same for both manual and automatic gearboxes. So the display of the gear selector is probably a coding matter.

There is no LIN in the tacho :) 0-2 is immo4a and 3-4 is immo4c. One can match a immo4c cluster to a immo4a vehicle - back in '14 I had a forum member do a full MFD red cluster upgrade to my 2004 Mk5 and it worked. Obviously this was done using other specialized tools.

@NZDubNurd, thank you very much for your detailed explanation! May I write you a pm?
