This thread is going to be a bit of a "work in progress". The goal is to educate new users, to give them a foundation of knowledge to build upon.

New to using VCDS or VCDS-Lite?

How to post your Auto-Scan on the forum!!!!

Setting realistic expectations
VCDS mainly does two things, sends a request and shows the response. I'll admit this is a paper thin veneer over the complex things going on in the background, but pretty much everything you do with VCDS is to send a request and then get a response back from the control module. VCDS, or the factory scan tool, can not force changes to happen, only request them.

What kind of request you can send and what kind of responses you get back is based on how this given control module was designed to behave under these current operating conditions. In other words, if you send a request that is not supported by the control module, your request will be ignored or rejected. Of flip side, you send a legitimate request to the control module, but the car is currently on fire, the control module again may ignore or reject the request under those current operating conditions.

It is common for cars with the same sheet metal to have different versions of control modules. Thus, you will find information online for a car that looks like your car, but that doesn't mean that information always applies to your car. Everything you can do with VCDS is based on how is this control module designed to behave under these current operating conditions.

VCDS requires a successful port test!
When VCDS is first installed or updated to a newer version, you will be required to have a successful Port Test. VCDS is looking for 3 things for the test to be successful:
  1. The HEX interface is found by VCDS.
  2. The firmware in the HEX interface is up to date.
  3. The HEX device is plugged up to a car.
Steps 1 and 2 can be done without being with the car. We have short videos for HEX-NET and HEX-V2 owners on how to do the firmware update:
Once the firmware update is complete, you are no longer required to have an active internet connection and can do another Port Test once plugged up to the car.

If using the HEX-NET wireless, please verify HEX-NET and computer are using the same wifi after you've done the firmware update.

work in progress....

New to the Ross-Tech forum?
per Bruce's request

What is the Ross-Tech forum?
The Ross-Tech web forum is a free resource for our registered customers to get vehicle support from the greatest variety of different people, in a place where answers will be searchable in the future as well.

What kind of support can I get here?
There are 3 main types of support we offer:
  1. Car Repair Support - sh*t broke yo, let see what we can do to help
  2. Tweaks - changing settings of the car to enable or disable functions with dealer level scan tool
  3. Retrofits - Installing non factory installed hardware

What are some rules I should be aware of here?
  • Be nice. You can be snarky, but you must be nice about it.
  • When asking for assistance, you must include a complete Auto-Scan.
  • As per the International Civil Aviation Organization recommendation of 1951, English is the default language. The English version of VCDS must be used for posting Auto-Scans.
  • When you solve your issue, please follow up and let everyone know what fixed the issue.
  • Please do not be like Ned Flander's parents:
:)

Technical information:
  • Note that the general public can not login to the wiki site, only Ross-Tech employees can login.
  • If you can't find answers in the wiki, then post your questions here in the forum.

Official Factory Repair Information:
  • erWin is a subscription based service.
  • 3 day package is cheaper than "the Bentley Repair Manual".
  • Bentley Repair Manuals stop at 2009.... so :(
  • Print to PDF all the info for your VIN! PDFs last longer than 3 days!
  • Ross-Tech has no official working relation with any erWin service.
Edit : July 2024 - The Australian market may be prohibited from technical information via the erWin services due to safety concerns.

Minimum computer requirements:

I would personally suggest (as September 2022) recommend Windows 10 and newer. Ross-Tech doesn't do anything to prevent VCDS from running on older operating systems, but at some point, an old computer is an old computer. XP users.... looking at you.

Antivirus Software:
If you are using McAfee or Norton products, my professional (and personal) advice:

Please remove any software from McAfee or Norton from your computer. We see them cause issues on a weekly basis with new customers. The free anti virus protection that come with Windows works good and I'm not aware it causing any issues with VCDS.

Suggested computer tweaks:
Some power saving settings on Windows computers can cause issues in that they can put the USB port or Wifi into stand-by modes. This can cause communication issues for VCDS. I suggest you alter settings for the wifi and USB:

Search Windows for the Power Options. Most likely you will get a result for Power & Sleep. Click on Additional Power Settings and this will open up the Choose or customize a power plan window. Whatever plan is selected, click on the link for Change plan settings. Now click on the Change advanced power settings link and you should get a window like this:

  • Wireless Adapter Settings - Power Saving Mode: set those to Maximum Performance
  • USB Settings - USB Selective suspend setting: set those to Disabled.
Virtual PCs (Mac users):
Not supported. You are welcome to give it a try, but if you run into issues, contact the vendor of virtual software you are using.

My computer died!
The full (non-Lite!) VCDS software is not locked down to single computer. You are welcome to download and install VCDS onto another Windows computer that meets the minimum requirements.

Windows 10 and 11 users with legacy USB interfaces:
  • HEX+CAN
  • HEX-USB
  • Micro-CAN
  • KII-USB
  • KEY-USB
On some Windows 10 and 11 computers, the required USB driver for these discontinued interfaces will not be allowed to load. It is possible the "Memory integrity" setting is enabled and will need to be disabled.

Check this:
Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Security -> Device Security -> Core Isolation. Is "Memory integrity" turned on? If so, turn it off. You may need to reboot the computer after this change is made.

The discontinued legacy interfaces will not work with ARM based Windows 11.
