Hi,

I have recently purchased VCDS HEXV2 to use on my VW TDI 100-5 Marine engine which is the 2.5 TDI which is engine code BCU, on research its a similar engine as in the T4s or LT35s.

I have 2 questions I have done my best to read up previous questions but haven't found an answer in laymens terms

I have tried to get the TDI timing button up but with no luck I am definitely looking in the right place after watching several videos but its just not there.

Am I missing something is this engine supported to do the TDI timing?

I also have 'label file:REDIR FAIL!

Is this linked and is there anything I can do or try?

Any help or guidance will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome.

Please do:
[Select]
[01-Engine]
[Fault Codes]
[Copy Codes]
and paste the results here. It doesn't matter if there are no fault codes, this will get us the complete ECU ID info.

Engine code for this should be BCU. TDI Timing Checker has an entry for it:
2.5l R5 TDI AHD (05/1998>) + ANF/ANG/ANH/BCT/BCU/BCV (Marine)

So it should be supported.

I have tried to get the TDI timing button up but with no luck I am definitely looking in the right place after watching several videos but its just not there.
Hmm.. I wonder of there's something in this that is precluding the button from being enabled?

Are you sure you're in Basic Settings, in Group 000? Can we get a screen-shot of that please?

Since this is a 2.5L R5, the timing requirement does not change with fuel temperature, so it's easy enough to check it manually. Get the engine warmed up. Put it in Basic Settings, Group 000. Look at field 9. This is the fuel temperature. The value there needs to be between 90 and 210 to for the timing check to be valid. Assuming it is, look at field 2. That's the injection timing (without any dynamic correction because you're in Basic Settings. The value there needs to be between 38 and 67. If so, your base timing is in the acceptable range. If the value there is out of that range, then it needs to be adjusted mechanically (presumably at the pump pulley).

The REDIR FAIL! is because the label file for that engine only exists in German and has never been translated to English.

Hi again, managed to get on the boat, PSA image of the print screen you was after, but from what you have said all looks good? Just not the timing button that I have seen others use online?

Thanks again, you are helping me out loads this sort of thing is not easy on a boat.

Field 9 is 145. That's between 90 and 210, so temp is acceptable.
But field 2 is at 68, when it should be between 38 and 67. So your base timing is just a tiny bit off. I'm not sure whether it's worth adjusting.

Just not the timing button that I have seen others use online?
Right, and it's still not clear exactly why. Can you give us a screen-shot of the Open Controller screen, where all the ECU info is?

Hi, managed to get to the boat to get you the Open Controller Screen as requested.

I also adjusted the timing a tad to get it within range.

Am I right in thinking that field 2 is what would be shown on the graph if the button was available?

Thanks again for your time.

Yes, the location of the crosshairs would be determined by fields 2 (vertical) and 9 (horizontal), and I'm still scratching my head wondering why it isn't.

Correction this is the latest figure with the timing adjustment.

OK so if field 2 and 9 is good im pretty content but if you work out the reason for no timing button that would be good.

All the best.

@FrogmanRN Thanks for the feedback. That function should work in next VCDS version. It is rather unlikely that you will need to revisit TDI Timing anytime soon but it couldn't hurt to check that function after the next major VCDS update since we don't receive a lot of Marine feedback.

Best,
Dana

Excellent. That's clearly within spec now. In fact, it's well centered in the acceptable range.
