Hello All,

New VCDS family member here :).

I've a query on new battery registration process in VCDS using HEX-NET for my 2015 Audi Q5. I've experienced this in VCDS while trying to register new battery (EverStart AGM H8):

I don't see Address 61 - Battery regulation listed under installed addresses. Please see the image below.
[/img]https://imgur.com/iKQDyac[/img]

I did try to go to Address 19-CAN Gateway to see if I can click/toggle on Address 61 to make it visible under installed addresses. I don't see address 61 there either. I can only see 61-Battery Regulation under Drive train tab. [/img]https://imgur.com/5zo0siy[/img]

I can't use this, as when I try to access it, VCDS will time out. So, I did further dowsing and found there is a possibility of battery registration being slave to CAN gateway and that needs a different process to register the battery. Link to my read is http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Battery_Replacement. Following this article and some other articles from the past stating to trick the module by changing just one digit in battery serial number for a battery without peculiar codes like original battery that came with my car. I just changed one number in the battery serial number for battery registration. After step one of this registration, I checked measuring block groups for 017, 018, 019 and 020 and values look sensible, all may not be correct as original battery had less Ah, CCA, and reserve capacity. [/img]https://imgur.com/domUJQy[/img] [/img]https://imgur.com/p5LpLFy[/img]

Now, for the next step to manually change the values in Adaptation-10 how do I proceed? I don't see Adaptation-10 in CAN gateway, what I've in VCDS for my car is Long Adaptation-0A and options under Long Adaptation-0A are not similar to what adaptation videos states to change battery's technical details for correct charging and maintenance by ECM. [/img]https://imgur.com/6Wm4SPM[/img]

Here is the entire post link , just in case.

What is the process to be followed for the second part of battery registration?

Regards,
rps

There are 2 versions of battery management on VAG vehicles:

- a standalone BMS at address #61

- a slave of the CAN gateway at address #19 (which does NOT appear as address #61).

If you post an Auto-Scan full and unedited (not just a screen shot) we will be able to confirm which version you have, and advise how to proceed.

Thanks Mari,

I've watched this video 10-12 times if not less just to make sure I don't miss anything. I spent about three hours checking all options in almost entire VCDS software that will provide the option for next three things to edit/update for the new battery i.e. last part in this video under Adaptation 10 for UDS protocol. Protocol on my VCDS 19-CAN gateway is CAN and not UDS, visible in the respective image above. I get the option to edit the battery information/replacement as shown in the middle of the video under Long Adaptation 0A for CAN protocol under 19-CAN Gateway.

In this video above, in the last part they switched to UDS version for updating rest of information (3 things battery size, manufacturer and serial number) and didn't show how a CAN gateway person is going to update the three parameters. That's what I'm after. Thanks again.

Regards,
rps

Thanks Dave,

Battery management version visible for my car in VCDS is second one

- a slave of the CAN gateway at address #19 (which does NOT appear as address #61). I've shared the images above confirming this.

After updating the battery information/replacement section under Long Adaptation 0A with CAN protocol for NON-UDS version as shown in the middle of the video above shared by Mari, I would like to learn how can I update the three things 1)battery size, 2)manufacturer and 3)serial number for CAN protocol of 19-CAN gateway. Most important is the battery size, rest are just numbers and I will assume won't make much of a difference to ECM.

The three things above are shown in the video for UDS version and not CAN protocol version. In UDS protocol, Adaptation-10 will be visible under 19-CAN Gateway but for CAN protocol Long Adaptatio-0A is available which doesn't have the option to edit anything but battery information/replacement. I'm wondering for CAN protocol in 19-CAN gateway, is it even possible to update the three things in VCDS?

rps

Please post an Auto-Scan so we can see exactly how your vehicle is quipped and configured.

OK, so the battery data can be found and updated in Adaptation channel 004 of 19-CAN Gateway.

The format for that channel is:

NNNNNNNNNNN XXX ZZZZZZZZZZ
N = Battery Part Number (11 Digits)
X = Battery Vendor (3 Digits)
Battery Serial Number (10 Digits)

What's in that channel currently? What are the specs of the battery you're installing? Most important is the Amp-Hour capacity, and a cursory web-search for 'EverStart AGM H8' doesn't turn it up for me.

Hi Uwe,

I have CAN protocol for 19-CAN Gateway so Adaptation-10 is not available for me. This is available for UDS protocol.

I've completed the battery information/replacement step-1 for battery registration as per the Ross-Tech battery registration video (also shared above by Mari) in the channel 04 of Long Adaptation-0A of 19-CAN Gateway (with CAN protocol) by changing serial number by just one as 341125P1VS from 341125P0VS, rest all details untouched. Here is the original battery info.

New Battery installed is EverStart AGM H8 which doesn't have BEM code like original Varta battery in the car. New Battery has 900CCA, 160 reserve capacity and 95 Ah while old Varta battery had 75Ah and 800 CCA.

MMI in the car isn't coming up for over two-three months, except like twice maybe, possibly due to battery not being charged sufficiently, doesn't matter how many times I drove on highway for an hour in a week. When I did optical bus scan, it came momentarily and then turned off again.

Regards,
rps

Yep, existing battery coding is for a part number with 75 Ah.

So I would try 000915105AH as the new part number. That should tell your Gateway that you've got a 95 Ah battery. I don't think Vendor and serial number have any functional effect, but I'd look for a serial number on your new battery and try to use it in the serial number field.

Many Thanks Uwe,

So, merely changing first two digits and adding "A" before last alphabet H in the part number will fix and tell ECM correct Ah for battery? If that will work, you just made my day.

If that works then there won't be any need to worry about second step of battery registration for manually changing battery size and other two as shown in the last part of video for UDS protocol.

How would I know if battery Ah has been accepted correctly and charging functionality has been changed as needed for the battery? One thing I would guess is MMI will come online permanently, maybe I'm wrong. Scanning channels 017,018,019 & 020 in Measuring Blocks -08 of 19-Can gateway, should I see something peculiar?

Inserting a character in the part number may shove everything else over. You may need to delete a blank space after the part number to get the Vendor code and Serial number back into their correct positions.

I'm not certain. I've not had a car with that exact Gateway setup. Check (and record?) what's in those MVBs before you change the battery part number, and check again afterward.

Thanks Uwe,

Sounds like a plan on measuring blocks values.

Got battery type "not OK" and size changed from 10 to 7 in channel 017 for measuring blocks. Kept all same except the first 10 characters 000915105AH JCB 341125P0VS. Will add photo, if needed, and once on PC.

Images for measuring blocks before and after battery information/replacement change are attached.

So "actual/available" battery capacity has increased. I'm guessing that's not the "rated" capacity, but what the battery management is willing to use based on the rating. Lead-acid batteries should never be fully discharged because doing so degrades them quite a lot. I'm not sure what to make of the Battery Size field. TBH, the method this Gateway uses to "code" a new battery sucks. Newer ones let you specify the exact battery type (Flooded / EFB / AGM, etc) and size in Ah.

50Ah to 70Ah increase? Engine was running in idle maybe its the charging. Rated capacity is 95Ah as I shared yesterday.

I was wondering what decides gateway protocol will be UDS or CAN? If I can get UDS protocol in VCDS on gateway then I will be able to code adaptation-10 instead of Long Adaptation-0A, just a thought. :)

The hardware and firmware in the module.
Cheers Dave!

We won't be able to update the firmware as that has to be done through Audi Server. So, we got to work with what we got, hahaha

Reviving an old one here, in hopes anyone may know the answer.
Recently replaced the battery on our 2011 Q5 3.2 Prestige and now need to enter the new info via 19-CAN Gateway, like rps above.
When I am on that screen I can see the old info and can enter new info but the SAVE button never lights up (ie. I'm unable to save).
I'm not changing the total # of characters or anything, just replacing the old part # with the new one.
No DTCs except for SAI ones that come and go. Nothing battery/electronics related.
Would a screenshot or such be helpful?
Grateful,
Corey
