so what's the procedure for changing your cluster and do you need a diesel cluster

If you use a petrol one, you won't be using much of the rev counter.

Sounds like you don't need one anyway.

Yes you need TDI cluster if need to be replace.Also cluster is not plug and play , it needs to be programed.
But in your case since noting was change in communication you have other module that causing this problem.

What you need to do start disconnecting other modules and see can you communicate with rest of them.
Next I would do is disconnected ABS , and see can you communicate with rest of the modules.

is there an app for module for the abs or do you just unplug the pump

disconnected ABS still no communication to engine, but I did find out why I had no rear brakes after changing calipers and brake lines. Their where 2 nails put in the brake lines at the master cylinder.
