Have you double checked the wiring is the same between the 2WD and 4WD ABS modules - I find it odd that comms stops with the Haldex when you swap the 4WD module in.

Occasionally, faulty ABS units have been known to take out comms too, but usually with more than just the haldex, from what I recall.

The ABS code doesn't neccesarily mean the ABS coding is wrong either... just that it doesn't match with "something", "somewhere". Kind of like when the link wires don't match the coding - the error code starts with "incorrectly coded" but also says "mechanical failure". There could be some small thing being overlooked.

Re the wiring, I am relatively confident that no wiring changes are needed for my combo of model year and parts. There's a detailed uk-mkivs thread that I found that has a lot of info on the topic.

This is interesting, though: "Occasionally, faulty ABS units have been known to take out comms too, but usually with more than just the haldex, from what I recall."

One thing I didn't mention is that before we installed the 4Motion ABS module and 4Motion G419 sensor, we were able to communicate with the Haldex. This is the first message I got a couple weeks ago before we had to wait for the new G419 sensor. This combo would've been original FWD ABS module and original FWD 2-sensor G419 module.

"I plugged your original ABS module in to test and I have ZERO fault codes. However, AWD still doesn't work. I can however communicate with the AWD module, scan for faults, perform output tests, etc. I can activate the Haldex pump, etc."

The 4Motion ABS module we're using is used. I had a hard time finding one at all. I might be able to buy a new one from a European parts reseller, but it's over $1,000. It could definitely be bad, I guess.

I made the assumption (which may have been incorrect) that since the coding initially shown in VCDS changed from 19-something with my FWD ABS module to 23049 with the 4Motion ABS module installed, then that meant it was communicating. What I mean is, when opening VCDS to code the 4Motion ABS module, it automatically showed 23049 before we ever tried to re-code it. Maybe that didn't mean as much as I thought.

The following message is what I got a couple weeks ago during the very first attempt to run VCDS after installing the 4Motion ABS module. I didn't think too much of this at the time since we hadn't re-coded anything and because we didn't have the correct G419 sensor yet:

"With the ABS module installed that you sent me, the car throws a bunch of fault codes. ESP defective, Steering angle no basic settings, incorrect coding, & AWD no communication. I believe that the ABS module is bad due to the ESP Sensor Unit Defective fault code. With this ABS module installed AWD is not working while driving the car."

However, most of those errors cleared up once we got the new G419 sensor.

I know this data is all over the place. I asked for a followup VCDS log today, but I didn't get one. So, the only log I have is the same one I posted yesterday, which is with the used 4Motion ABS module installed, the new G419 sensor installed and an initial attempt at re-coding:

I may have also been confused because I may have been attributing "no communication" errors to improper coding rather than thinking it might've been a hardware issue.

When we upgraded my car to Climatronic, we also had a lot of "no communication" errors that all went away once we coded the Climatronic module correctly.

Here is today's update. I will post a VCDS log ASAP. I apologize if this may be moving outside the realm of this forum.

They swapped out the Haldex controller, and apparently some things started working. It sounds like they can enable 4Motion using VCDS, but 4Motion won't activate on its own because something thinks the brake switch is activated.

What's weird to me is, we had a pain getting cruise control working back in the fall. It turned out to be the clutch pedal switch, but we replaced the brake pedal switch at the same time due to intermittent communication errors. Cruise control worked for the drive to Denver (where this project is being done,) and I'm 99% sure that it wouldn't have worked with this symptom they're describing. I don't know what would've changed in the meantime, except for the wiring for the Haldex.

Here is the info they sent me. Could this still be a coding issue? I will post updated coding info and a new VCDS log once they send me the info:

Hey a bit of an update today. With the new haldex module installed in the car I am now able to run through all output tests successfully. And the AWD does work correctly when performing the output test. I can drive the car and enable the AWD Clutch and the car will be AWD. However the car is only FWD naturally on its own. I brought my GTI to work today and have been comparing some information. What I found was that the brake switch is always activated in both the ABS module and in the AWD module. It will not deactivate. I do not know why. I have verified that my wiring for the AWD is correct, I verified that I do not have 12 volts at the brake switch when it is not engaged at T8/3 on haldex module, I have verified that I do have 12 volts at T8/3 on haldex module when the brakes are activated. Which tells me that that portion of the brake switch is working. I switched the brake switch from my GTI to your car, no change. Even with the brake switch unplugged, it still reads activated in VCDS. I changed the ABS module back to your original one. Same deal.

I got my car back, so I can now do some of this testing on my own and be more responsive with logs, etc. I am going to take a step back and redo some of the steps. This may be a repeat of some previous info, but I can't be 100% sure what the shop was doing.

Here is a current log file. The state of my car is that it has these parts installed: 4Motion ABS module, 4Motion G419 sensor, Hadlex controller from the donor car.

We re-coded the CAN Gateway and turned off the ignition for 30 seconds. We also re-coded the ABS module. Unfortunately, the ABS module still triggers error codes, including one for "01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded" even though it accepted (and I am 99% sure it is correct) the code of 23049. We also installed a brand new battery because mine may have been on its last legs.

Could I be using the wrong coding of 23049? I had been relying on that because a forum user had sent it to me because it is what worked for his R32. His math was: 18432 + 4096 + 521 = 23049. However, I just re-read this Ross Tech link and the drive-by-wire/cable-throttle numbers aren't listed in the "ABS/EDS/ASR/ESP (All-Wheel-Drive)" section.

Or, is this an ommission on that page for that section?

Also, could using the 128 for rough road suspension be the difference between working or not?

I will be able to experiment with these tomorrow when my car finally returns.

His math was: 18432 + 4096 + 521 = 23049
Usually those numbers we add together are powers of 2 so I'm puzzled by 18432 and 521, but I see they are shown in the wiki?

To make that total needs (16384 + 2048) + 4096 + (512 + 8 + 1) = 23049.

I think they are combinations of bits (powers of two) that have been seen.

I should've probably given more credit to the members who thought the ABS module might be bad, there was a wiring issue, or both.

Has anyone ever heard of an ABS module accepting coding but after a few minutes, triggering another "01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded" error code?

Now that I finally have my car in my hands, I spent about an hour today going through a ton of different VCDS screens. I also tried a number of codes.

In the end, the only two codes that would work were 23049 and 23177. Everything else I tried said out of range. The difference is the "rough road" suspension. These two codes let me code and re-code the ABS module to see if the coding would stick.

If I coded, cleared the codes and immediately re-ran a scan, I'd only get a single error:

01324 - Control Module for All Wheel Drive (J492)
004 - No Signal/Communication

However, after a few minutes, the "01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded" would return.

Here is a log that I got immediately after coding the module with 23177 and then clearing the codes:

I have made some progress. It turns out the Haldex controller was somehow on the wrong CAN-BUS. After fixing this, I can now run out tests in VCDS and the Advanced Measuring Values for both ABS and AWS indicate that they can talk to each other (what were 0's are now 1's) and they can talk to all of the sensors too.

However, I still cannot code this ABS module with a code for an "All-Wheel-Drive" car. It will only accept codes for a "Front-Wheel-Drive" car if we're using this Ross-Tech page as the reference:

Someone mentioned the ECU in an earlier post. If I have gone through the CAN Gateway re-coding process to rebuild the modules list, is there another place where there might be coding for the ECU? Could the ECU think it's a front wheel drive ECU and by changing a bit somewhere, it will think it's a 4Motion ECU?

My ABS module is definitely the correct part number (ending it P, it's the same part for an R32 and a 4Motion Bora.) So, it seems like some other module is blocking me from coding the ABS module with a 4Motion code. Graeme in Australia has been helping me, and he seems to think something similar.

I find it somewhat puzzling that an ABS/ESP module that is clearly an "ALLRAD" variant doesn't seem to have the +4 bit set. That bit seems to be the main difference between AWD and FWD codings. Did that ABS module come with that coding in it?

Based on the DTC in your scan two posts up, the ABS was clearly looking for a Haldex module on the bus. Has this DTC gone away now that you have the CAN wiring sorted?

Yes, this ABS module was used. It's almost impossible to find a new one. There's one on eBay from Latvia, but it's almost $1,100. During this project, I've noticed that it's been getting much harder to find these 4Motion-related parts. I already had to suck it up and buy the 3-sensor G251 module from Germany for a similar price, so I was hoping to avoid doing so with the ABS controller. The used ABS part was purchased from a place in Pennsylvania that parts out R32's and GLI's. If buying a new one is the best option, I can probably do that.

The only other used electronic part I am using is the Haldex controller, but it now seems to be communicating. I was able to complete the output tests yesterday, which I hadn't been able to do previously. The 4Motion versions of the G419 module and rear ABS sensors are new.

As far as codes, here is a new scan. Except for a glow plug error that has recently popped up, I am down to a single error after the wiring issues we addressed.

One additional question I had... I posted a question on the UK-MKIVS forums about coding, and someone with a similar 4Motion car posted their factory coding: 0023046

If both the wiki and the VCDS popover don't show the numbers for "Drive-By-Wire" or "Cable-Throttle" under the All-Wheel-Drive section (they're only listed under the front-wheel-drive section of the wiki,) then how could a 4Motion car have ABS coding above 18xxx or 19xxx if the 4096 isn't being added? Is there any chance VCDS is incorrect?

Here is the post from the UK-MKIVS forum. I haven't tried the number they've mentioned yet. The "F" version of the ABS module is the RHD version:

My coding is;

Code:
Address 03: ABS Brakes
Controller: 1C0 907 379 F
Component: ESP ALLRAD MK60 0104
Coding: 0023046

The coding from the Rosstech wiki never quite added up to my factory 0023046 once you add up all the various bitmasks from their guide I ended up with 0023047

0004097 = Drive-By-Wire Engines
+0000518 = FN3 54 15"/16" (PR-1LE/1LJ/1LN/1LQ/1LT/1ZD/1ZE/1ZH)
+0018432 = Gasoline Engine (from 92 kW / 125 HP) & All Diesel Engines

=0023047 (rather than my 0023046)

Not sure what that one bit controls but here are the notes that I made on the binaries in case that helps you track down your issue ( please double-check but I think I'm good with my assumptions)

0101101000001001 R32
0101001000001001 R32 ESP Off

Those "binaries" listed in your post may have required loop changes that would be listed in the wiring diagram - sometimes there are 4 or mre different possible combinations.

Have you revisited the wiring of the ABS module plug yet?

There are loop wires between different pins, that have to match the coding.

Often those faults have "mechincal failure" tagged on the end, but maybe not always.

My car has different wire loops for brake size. The car doesn't know it's brake size, but if you code to a model that can ONLY be used with certain sizes, it must match the coding etc.

I would not do that at point.

Is there any chance VCDS is incorrect?
Sure, there is a chance. The numbers given in the Wiki and VCDS look to have been gathered by observation, rather than from any sort of coding reference from VW.

There don't seem to be a whole lot of scans on the 'net that have your exact ABS in 'em.. :(

I've been using a PartsLink24 account during this project, and the only three part numbers for ABS controllers that are also for ESP and 4Motion are:

1C0907379F
1C0907379P
1C0907379N

"F" is right hand drive. "P" seems to be what was used in the US R32 but it also is listed for a 2004 Bora. I can't find much info in the "N" version.

If I cross reference with the OEMVWShop website which is a good resource for PR codes, the P version doesn't list any specific engine PR codes, but the N version does and they include diesel engines. PartsLink24 doesn't seem to differentiate the P and the N versions.

One confusing thing, when looking for parts, is that you sometimes have to switch the last "9" to a "5" because some sites list the controller 1/3 of the module by its individual part number, but some list the part number for the whole module, i.e. all three thirds including the pump and whatever the shiny metal middle section is.

Is there any chance the ECU is blocking this? I am probably reading too much into this, but should the popover in my VCDS show options for 4Motion and/or 6-speed manual when looking at the Engine coding? I can't find anything to which to compare this:

Those "binaries" listed in your post may have required loop changes that would be listed in the wiring diagram - sometimes there are 4 or mre different possible combinations.

Have you revisited the wiring of the ABS module plug yet?

There are loop wires between different pins, that have to match the coding.

Often those faults have "mechincal failure" tagged on the end, but maybe not always.

My car has different wire loops for brake size. The car doesn't know it's brake size, but if you code to a model that can ONLY be used with certain sizes, it must match the coding etc.

Thanks, I will look into this.

I will say that that I tried every coding combo using the UK-MKIVS thread as a starting point, and no other codes were accepted. I tried using the numbers for every brake size:

0023046 = Out of Range
0022534 = Out of Range
0023047 = Out of Range
0023049 = Out of Range

^^ + 128 (rough road suspension)
0023174 = Out of Range
0022662 = Out of Range
0023175 = Out of Range
0023177 = Out of Range

I also tried them all, but subtracting 4096 like the Ross-tech wiki says, but all results were the same.

I was just reading my Bentley manual, and it also shows 23046 and/or 23174 as the correct coding.

I also came across this line in the Scan Tool section:

“3. Specific ECM part numbers will only recognize the values listed above as valid.”

Does this mean I need an appropriate ECM/ECU? If so, is it possible to recode my ECU? If they can be flashed by tuners, it seems like something like this should be possible. I emailed Malone (I already have one of their tunes) so I guess I will see what they say.

I don't have specs for what codings a particular ECU software will accept. But it is not at all uncommon for ECUs to refuse some codings that are "documented".

Given the nature of what you're doing here, that's probably a good idea. They dig around in the internals of ECU software; we don't.
