Can anyone help, a couple of months back I replaced an injector on a CAYB Golf 1.6 TDI. yesterday the car was brought back to me with a diesel knock between 1250 and 2500 rpm, after 2500 rpm perfect. They reported the car broken down two days ago with the coil light on, they took a picture of the fault code before the mechanic cleared the code.

the fault was P0601 00 (036) memory check sum error.

After clearing the fault, the car seem to be fine and hasn't produced a code since. What concerning me is the diesel knock which is now present since the code been reset.

Other threads I have read quote its usually a permanent fault with a defective ecu, i notice Rosstech quote Low voltage - which you could relate to an intermittent fault but what's really confusing is how that would cause diesel knock.. any ideas would be greatly received, I cant find anything wrong.

Possible Causes​

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) defective
  • Flash ROM (used in aftermarket "chips") defective
  • Low Voltage

Possible Solutions​

  • Replace ECU
  • Contact aftermarket chiptuner for repair of their chip
  • Check and test Battery and Charging system

Load test powers/grounds of ECM and verify there is no voltage drop under load. To that end, I personally suggest using the 180 LOADpro for this type of testing.

The first thing I checked, was for corrosion on the ECU terminal and resistance on the main lines. I have not performed an insulation test, i cant find my tester. I will see if i can borrow one today.

Hi JMR injector 1 is New, it was replaces late November 2021, main dealer supplied. I was not sure if it was just over compensating.. sound like it may not be..

recommendation, replace i take it, i take it..

Had a similar case on a car some time ago on a similar Golf 6 1.6 TDI. Customer requested to replace a lot, with no avail. Replaced 2 injectors, DPF sensor etc etc even though I didn't think it was necessary...

Finally decided to replace a full set ECU/key/cluster but then the customer decided to bail on me since things were getting too expensive.
To quote, I was enabling him to replace a lot of unnecessary parts.
Good thing is, I'm now the proud owner of two brand new CAY injectors and a key/ECU/cluster set :cool:

No matter , injector rates on pd or common rail is the same trust me. There is also an Audi A6 2.7 common rail..see injector rates.

HI JMR - I tried to carry out the injector minimum quantity deviation adaptation back in November but it doesn't seem to be available for CAYB on VCDS, I had previously raised this with Uwe @rosstech after being advised to do this adaption when fitting a new injector.

Not sure why it not available.

Hi JMR, I tried to find that video but it like trying to find a needle in a haystack on YT. If you got a link it would be much appreciated.

Picked up two new injector's today from a VDO repair centre, ouch, why do they have to be so expensive.. speaking to the guys there, it a common issue, they sell loads.. asked about a repair, they quote, No genuine spares are available so it cant be done.

They did show me an injector which had be overhauled with imported Chinese parts, owner didn't get a year, what a mess.

I will try and find a vid for ou but i ve seen mechanics twisting the head nut at the top of the injector while checking out a vcds injector rate ..until it got to the best injection compensation rate ( usually under 0.99 mg/stroke ). However fixing one injector might throw off the balance of others so you have to play around a bit with it .

Hi JMR, i've had some fun today, I replaced both injector cylinder 1 & 2 with two new VDO / Continental A2C9626040080 ( New ) purchased direct from VDO dealer / Repair centre.. Coded up, reset the deviation values and let the car idle for 15 mins, and then took the car for a 20 min run.. once back i fired up VCDS and received the following deviations Deviation image

The car runs perfect, I contacted VDO dealer awaiting a call back, I called the local VW Dealer they advised changing all four as a set..i almost fell over

the car worth £2500 ish , in two months the customer has spent £1500 on replacement injectors, £200 on tyres, £120 rear pads and discs, M.O.T and a service in total about £2000.

Now i need to tell him he need another 2 injectors at £800, plus today a scan identified 7286 - Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor Circuit..

The car, that just keeps on giving.
