Hello: I am a newbie and struggling with the secondary air test. Let me give an explanation of what I have done so far and the history. This is for a 2007 New Beetle

1) Started with The check engine light came on with an 02 bank 1 sensor 1 error.
2) Replaced sensor and cleared error code.
3) Car was driven based on recommended prescribed procedure for car to be ready.
Did not look at the ready icons on the code reader before going to get the car smoged.
Went to get the car smoged and it failed SAI stating it was "not ready" was informed to replace the air pump
4) The air pump and conbi valve was replaced.
5) Car was driven based on recommended prescribed procedure for car to be ready.
The code reader was used to check the ready status of the secondary air and it still indicated "not ready"

I decided to purchase the Ross-tech software to set ready as no codes are showing up only the "not ready" icon continues to show.

6) I ran an auto scan and this is what it shows (see below). When I go to the secondary air test section, it doesnt respond. It doesnt start at all.

Please can someone review and let me know what could be happening and any guidance towards what I may need to fix to get the secondary air to be ready.

Getting the readiness to complete can be a quick or slow and frustrating job and it varies from car to car. Are you doing the tests manually or in auto? From memory the SAI system is Basic Settings 074, often I find that a lambda sensor readiness failure will not let the SAI complete because the sensors measure the systems affect so you need to complete that readiness first and I think it is BS 044 ish? If you ever run through the blocks manually from 001 to 256 you can find a few other tests not shown and some which have no explanation often right up in the 200’s BUT if you ever do this, DO NOT carry out Basic Settings 060 with the engine running or you will store a throttle body code and clearing it will clear the readiness settings you have completed. I find that carrying out adaptations 001 to clear learnt values (I do this three times) and then clear the codes, set the TB in BS 060 and then set the readiness a block at a time starting with 028 makes it work. Obviously on later systems you can’t do this.

I drove the car and upon return I checked the readiness status. They show all green except for secondary air. If you can explain why I would need to manually go back and manually run the tests on the 02 sensors to achieve the readiness on secondary air? I believe that the ECU is not sending the signal to the combi valve. But yet there is no code stating insufficient airflow??? Confusing.

Hello: I am looking for a replacement ECM for my beetle. Any suggestions on where to buy or get it repaired? Any referrals? Anyone here selling one?

You're looking to replace the ECU because the it won't set one Readiness bit?

Context:

I'd replace the Oxygen Sensor that you got from Rock Auto with one from a VW dealer first! I seriously doubt that replacing the ECU is going to solve the problem in the above thread. I'm by no means certain that it's due to a dodgy replacement Oxygen Sensor, but I really doubt it's the ECU itself.

I should have posted first, that I was not able to run an auto scan. Gateway communication fault. So, I ran installation list to get help with 2AI. Need car to pass smog. Could that fault stop the O2 sensor from becoming ready? Thanks for your help so far.

Well, you were able to run Auto-Scan by selecting the proper chassis, as evidenced by the Auto-Scan you posted in the other thread. As for "Gateway communication fault", something like that is expected if you try to use Auto-Detect on the Auto-Scan screen because the that generation of Beetle (1C chassis) does not have a Gateway Installation List.

Could that fault stop the O2 sensor from becoming ready?
No, but a Chinese Replacement Auto Part sensor from Rock Auto might. ;)

-Uwe-

PS: I'm going to merge your threads.

Run the readiness monitors in the shop, clear codes and run ECM 01, then Basic Settings 04, then run 077 at idle, see if the SAI runs that way., process takes about 2 minutes, if SAI passes set the rest of the monitors in the shop.

If SAI monitor doesn't pass check the codes to see what failed.

Installed O2 sensor purchased from dealer. Still can’t set ready for 2AI. First test does not change, no matter how long I let it run. The OBD adapter blinks green/ red. Is that normal? Do I need to send computer out for repair? Thanks for all your suggestions.

After trying to set SAI readiness you get no codes for SAI?
How about output tests. Does pump run? Does SAI kombi valve click?
Why no response about TSB https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10159350-0001.pdf
If you believe ECU is not sending signal to Kombi valve do output tests for kombi valve.
You keep going back to bad ECU maybe? But swapping ECU isn't easy!
You need to know it's bad after checking wiring and output tests send no signal out to Kombi then maybe ECU?
Good Luck

The car dose not have a sensor at the location in the TSB. How is the air measured with my set-up? Also, I can set all of the Readiness, except SAi by driving the car. But not with the software. Some of the test I am able to achieve the last field, to move on to the next. Others do not indicate if the needs to be started by me . Or I need to initiate. Sorry I am a newbie. I know with practice I will understand and be able to use the software as intended. I enjoy problem solving and your suggestions are appreciated. What steps can I take to better understand coding and communications for Audi / VW. I just bought a Q5.
