Hello,

My engine doesn't start easily when the wheather is cold ( around 0° celcius°) and most of all consomation of gazole is very excessive.
I have also prblms with my wipes and electrics glasses (just the right side)
VCDS shows that i have a pblm with the glow plug module J179!
Do i have to change it or anything else?
I changed already it a few years now ( 2 years) and now i have pblms with it again

Does anybody knows how to solve this problem definitely?
Here's the full scan i have done today

Hello,

Thanks for posting on the Ross-Tech forum.

If the weather is cold enough, an inoperative Glow Plug system is going to make it difficult to start a cold engine.

"Temperature: 19.8°C" was listed in the fault code freeze frame data, has it been colder than this?

You should also check the coolant temperature sensor. You can use VCDS to check the 'Engine Coolant Temperature - G62' when the engine is cold (over night) and verify the G62 sensor is reading correctly. The coolant temperature should be the about the same as the ambient temperature.

If the temperature reading is not correct, it could contributing to the 'hard start' condition and if the temperature sensor is not reading correctly when the engine is warm, it could also explain the excessive fuel consumption (surconsommation of gazole).

When connected to the [01-Engine] controller, use the Measuring Value Block Group [001], field (4) to display the current value of the "Coolant Temperature (G62)".

P0684 - Glow Plug Control Module (J179): Implausible Signal

- This fault code can set when there is a missing message from the 'Automatic Glow Time Control Module - J179' or the J179 sends an 'Error' message to the ECM.

The Official Factory Repair Information recommends to check the J179, its connections to the ECM, the power and ground to the J179 and if all the above are correct, you may need to test with a known good J179.

01498 - Bulb for Parking Lamps; Right (M3)
30-00 - Open or Short to Plus

Have a look at this Ross-Tech wiki page for the fault code above... http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01498

Hope this helps,

drpeter

Hello Dr Peter,

Thank you for your fast reply first!
Secondly i need to know if a fautly G62 may affect the J179 defaut?
I mean is there a direct relation beetwen the two or no?
Thank you

Hello again...

Good question... I would think... No, not to the best of my knowledge. I say this because a failing or inaccurate G62 sensor should not cause an "Implausible Signal" fault for the J179, relay.

As mentioned above, the 'signal' out of the J179 is either missing or with error, hence the "Implausible" or 'Not possible' part of the fault code.

This can be confirmed of course by verifying the accuracy of the G62, clearing the fault codes and see if the P0684 code still comes back.

Again, hope this helps,

drpeter

Thanks for your reply and your very best reflexion!
I just take the measure of the value of G62 while the weather was 5° celcius and the VCDS shows the water was 22.5° celcius
Tomorrow that means in 8 hours i will turn back and re take a new measure of G62 indication to confirm it's fautly.
For the glow plug i will have to wait for changing G62 for conclude thatis fautly two

I changed already it a few years now ( 2 years) and now i have pblms with it again
was it a genuine OEM part? Or aftermarket? Also , I agree with @DrPeter , bad water sensor throws a wrench in the starting of the engine. Also, you could have a shortcircuited glow plug and that could throw the J179 in the dark. You could check your plugs by taking them out and hook them to a 12 V battery for 2-3 seconds see it the tip gets glowing red.

Hello again all,
I take the measure of the G62 this morning and i have 2.7° celcius while the ambient temperature was 1.5° celcius!
I think my G62 is nearly good! What do you think?
And now i'm going to control my glow plugs first and replace them in case they need to be changed.
After this i'm gonna check my control modul J179 and search one brand new and one of the best quality!
I will post the informations back asap!
Thank you all!

Hello,
I check my glow plugs and they are correct!
I think my control module glow plug is definetively faulty because i have many functions that does not work in my car ( electric right glass rear wipe...)
Does somebody able to tell me his thinking about my G62 sensor?
Is it correct or faulty?
Best regards

The module that controls the glow plugs is NOT the same module that controls things like the rear wash/wipe - so you need to look for either a common failure point or you have more than one failure.

Here is the part number 0 281 003 085 BOSCH
Last time when i had to change my control module the symptoms where the same as now
And once i change it the whole pblms disappear
Are you sure of what you say?
If yes i have to push my check further away!
Please confirm it to me and tell me what control module makes working the glasses

Are you sure of what you say?
Yes 100% sure, look at your Auto-Scan for the information.

The glow plug control module is controlled by the engine ECU at address #1, but things like the rear light fault etc are controlled by the CECM at address #9and the rear wash/wipe by the SCSM at address #16.

BTW I owned various models of 8E A4/S4/RS4 for 13 years ...

Thank you for your fast and sure confirmation!
Can you explain me why there are so many pins in that relay?
And have you an explication for the glasses which worked again once i have changed this relay?
What do you call CECM?

I wasn't clear perhaps:
i mean alimentation relay of options of the car.
I'm not talking about coding module
Have i been understood?
Thank you again for your cooperation

It sounds like you need a wiring diagram (see how that is bold? that means it's a link telling where to get a wiring diagram).

As I said the CECM is at address #9 in the Auto-Scan, the label says "Cent. Elect." which means Central Electric Control Module (CECM for short) - which you can also see if you hover your mouse over CECM (see how that is green bold and underlined?)

Ok i understand you now!
I have to think why control module glow plug doesn't work fine at the same time of cecm!
Another pleasure party omg!

I was hoping it was just a faulty G62 sending pumped-up temperature readings to the J179, but your measurement seems to show that G62 is working correctly (at least it did so when you tested it).
You say you had J179 replaced 2 years ago, and the unit you had installed was a used one - not a surprise to see it go after 2 years.
I agree with @PetrolDave that glow plugs shouldn't have anything to do with right-side mirrors or wipers, but maybe they share a fuse or some other electrical element. And you do have a bulb fault code on the right-hand side as well.
Wiring diagram sounds like a very good idea.

After this i will check my cecm and get back to you too
Thank you for all for your precious helping
