I installed Passat B8 (= MQB platform) seats in my Golf Variant Mk6 (= PQ platfom). I tried to buy the seats with the most electronic systems, so this HowTo should contain info on almost all electronic systems in those. I think that this HowTo should therefor be valid for most (or all?) seats from these two platforms.

Understanding seat electronics

A common misinterception is that a "seat module" exists that handles all the electronic systems in the seat(s). This is false. All the electronic systems that come with the seat are independent from each other. Make sure you understand this before starting the retrofit :-) Some people may call the module with address 36 ("memory seat", better fitting from the german translation: "seat adjustment") as "seat module", but this misleading and - as stated before - false. There's no such module. So, when thinking about retrofitting seats, the way to success is to check each electronic system for it's compatibility. I tried to install seats with the highest spec and think the following list should contain all electronic systems that came in PQ and MQB platform. Before retrofittig, ask yourself:

1. Will the seat adjustment (motors for seat cushion height, seat cushion tilt, backrest tilt, seat position, lordosis adjustment with massage function, memory function, easy entry function) be compatible?
2. Will the side airbag ignitors be compatible?
3. Will the seat buckles and seat occupation mat be compatible?
4. Will the seat heating be compatible?
5. Will the seat ventilation be compatible?
6. Will the Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) be compatible?
7. Will the rear footwell illumination be compatible?

While most of these questions are applyable to both seats, some require to take a individual look at the drivers and passengers seats. Don't worry, I will take this into account in the following chapters. Let's go:

Considerations for selecting seats

First, consider going the "easy route": Companys like Recaro offer retrofittable upgrade seats, but they're as expensive as good used VAG ones. I have the Recaro ErgoMed installed, but wasn't so happy because it lacks a few electronic systems: no memory function, no massage function, and worst of all: It has it's own heat switch. So the heat switch on the climate control panel becomes dead. Even tho there's a workaround for this - you can install a temperature NTC in the seat cushion to make it work again. To be fair, it also adds a cool function: adjustable bolsters. These aftermarket seats are way easier to install, because they're more or less plug-and-play.

If you want to go the "hard route", read on:
- The materials (leather, alcantare, a mix of both, etc.) and it's color shall match the car
- Shall be ergonomic. There's a german association that publishes a list of cars that use ergonomic seats: https://www.agr-ev.de/de/ratgeber-produkte/produkte/2903-autositze#vw1
- The seat's dimensions shall fit the car (check height x width x lentgh)
- The seat mounting position shall be compatible. The Passat B8 seat can be bolted on the Golf Mk6 chassis plug-and-play. However, without making a adapter plate, the seats are then slightly (maybe 5 to 10mm) closer to the center console. Also, with head rest fully extended and the seat height up all the way it touches the head liner. Both issues didn't bother in my case.
- The mounting rail shall be compatible (Golf Mk6 and Passat B8 were compatible, so I guess most VAG seats use the same mounting holes)
- Shall allow installation of a underseat drawer (might not be possible on cars with installed "seat memory module" because the module takes that space)
- Shall allow installation of a fire extinguisher (might also be not possible for the same reason)
- Shall allow a foldable passengers seat (to increase cargo capacity)
- Must have side airbags, if the current one had them.
- Shall have massage function (which is only a seat adjustment module's software function that triggers the lumbar support to make some kind of up+down+in+out movement). Pretty lame imho.
- Shall have Easy Entry function (which is a sub-function from memory seat module). Also kind of lame, but maybe I'm not using it correctly.
- Shall have the "ergoComfort" badge. Afaik this doesn't mean that the seats have better cushions or something, but simply that they have a a defined minimum equipment (for example extractable thighs support - even if its manually operated). Problem here seems to be, that seats with thighs support are not available in conjunction with ventilated seats (afaik they use the same space under the seat).
- Shall have seat ventilation (also called climate seats)
- Shall have heating function
- Shall not be "partly electric" (8-way), but "fully electric" (12-way) seats. See table for PQ cars (not sure if 100% correct):
8-wayseat cushion rear (up + down)
seat position (front + back)
lumbar support (in + out)
backrest (front + back)
12-way+ seat cushion front (up + down)
+ lumbar support (up + down)
Not available are the following adjustments are in Passat B8 (but maybe in other MQB cars):
  • adjustable seat side bolsters
  • adjustable backrest side bolsters
  • adjustable thigh support
  • headrest vertical position
  • headrest horizontal position

1. Will the seat adjustment module be compatible?

While the passenger's seat is also available "fully electric", afaik in PQ the memory seat function is only available for the driver's seat.

Seat memory function

Before retrofitting, it's good to understand how it works. And let me tell you: Using the memory function isn't intuitive. For example, the states of handbrake, doors, mirror adjustment knob, terminal 15 etc. are relevant and make a difference on if you're able to store the position. You can even link the memory seats to your keys, so they adjust in dependency on which key is used to unlock the car. Good luck using the memory seat feature without the user's manual - in which this chapters is explained in 2 whole pages. I strongly suggest downloading that chapter from VW's "digital manual portal", f.e. using a Sharan 2019 VIN. There you can view it and download it in pdf format. If you guys want, I can share it here - let me know.

The seat memory function comes with the following sub-functions:
I Side mirror memory function
II Easy entry function (optional)
III Massage function (optional)

All those functions are hosted on the "driver's seat memory module". The one module for PQ that supports all of the above listed functions seems to be 3C8959760F, so I went for this one. When comparing the wiring and connectors to the MQB module of the Passat B8 seat, I noticed that they're almost the same. The only difference: In PQ there seem to be two different positioning motor wirings: 4-wire and (in later years) 2-wire motor connections. I thought "it's simple: 2-wire motors for non-memory seats, and 4-wire motors for memory-seats (--> 2 wires for powering the motor, 2 wires the read the position)". And that was correct. But a few years ago, they seem to have started using a new technique (for PQ as well as MQB cars) that saves those two additional wires: "Sensorless Position Control", also called "Ripple Counting Technique". Since the donor 3C8959760F came from a Sharan with 4-wire system and the Passat B8 uses the newer 2-wire system, I expected that the module would store a faults like "position sensors: no signal". But to my surprise, this wasn't the case. I simply put said module in the Passat B8 seat and it worked flawslessly (except the lumbar support, but i'll get this later)! I didn't do any coding or adaption. For this reason I think that the module automatically detects if it's connected to a 2-wire or a 4-wire system.

seat-adj.png

I Side mirror memory function

Also part of the seat memory function is the side mirrors memory. That means, that the side mirrors position (vertical + horizontal) are also saved. My Golf Mk6 came with "electric adjustable mirrors with passenger mirror lowering in reverse". That means, that the passenger mirror already is a memory mirror. That means, I simply had to make the driver's mirror also a memory mirror. The driver's door control unit (address 42) needs to support it. Check it by trying to enable Byte 1, Bit 0 ("seat/mirror memory installed"). It should result in a fault code "66821 - potentiometer for mirror adjustment, B11FA 29 - unplausible signal". That's because the module can't read the signals from the two potentiometers (for vertical and horizontal position). To retrofit it, you need to:
A: Change the mirror glass baseplate from non-memory (3D0959578B) to a memory (3D0959578C). These part numbers should work for almost all PQ platform cars, but better recheck it for your specific car.
B: Change the baseplate connector to 8-pin version. Not available as spare part, because the whole wiring inside the mirror is not meant to be repaired or replaced.
C: Install two wires from the driver's side door module --> baseplate. ELSA doesn't cover this wiring, the pinning should be: Pin 1 --> Pin 7 and Pin 9 --> Pin 3. Nut 100% sure - If anyone could confirm, that'd be great.
I suggest to complete tasks B and C together by buying a side mirror harness pigtail from aliexpress, that did the trick for me. Looks like this:
loom.jpg

II Easy entry function

Afaik this function means two different things, depending on if it's about a 4-door or a 2-door car:

- In 4-door cars it means that the seat moves back about 10cm, so getting in and out is easier for the front passenger
- In 2-door cars it means that when folding the seat, the seat moves forward so getting in and out is easier for the rear passenger(s)

I read it can be enabled by coding/adapating, but because it worked without me doing anything, I didn't have to get into this topic - so not much info here, sorry.

III Massage function (using lumbar support)

This is unfortunately very simply solved by VAG for VW cars: it simply uses the lumbar support and makes it move up, down, in and out. Lame. In the better Audi models, that's an own system using valves that do real massage. The function is triggered by pushing button no.3 in the "memory seat controls". If you're using a non-memory driver's seat adjustment module, this button is instead used to save a 3rd position. Even the wiring is the same. That said, on memory seats the button no.3 is exactly the same, but instead of having the number "3" printed on it, it shows the "massage" symbol.

mem.png

The lumbar support of course also can be controlled as usual using the 2-axes button on the side of the seat. It seems that there's a difference in this button, because there's two faults ("02335" and "02336") that say "buttons for lumbar control: mechanical fault". I didn't work it out yet, but my guess is that there's some difference between the PQ and MQB version of that button. I will install the PQ button in the Passat B8 seat and see if that does the trick. Will update on this topic.

2. Will the side airbag ignitors be compatible?
Driver's seat and passenger's seat airbags work the same. They could be connected plug-and-play. No faults in airbag module.
sa.png

3. Will the seat buckles and seat occupation mat be compatible?
The seat buckles are simple NO (Normally Open) contacts in Euro spec Golf Mk6. That means, when the seat belt is applied, simply a switch is closed. In the Passat B8 seats I bought, they work the same. So it's plug-and-play. However I read that in some non-Euro spec models, the seat buckles have a resistor in parallel for open wire detection. This can be found out easily using a multimeter.

The seat occupation mat (which is only installed in the passenger seat) works as a switch that in Golf Mk6 is connected in series to the seat buckle. In Passat B8, this is not the case. Instead, the seat occupation mat contact is directly connected to the Airbag module. I tried to connect it in series with the seat buckle, to have it connected "the Golf Mk6 way", but it didn't work. When driving, the "passengers safety belt not fastened alarm" is active even when the seat is unoccupied. If anyone has an idea how to fix it, let me know. For now, I simply bridged the seat occupation mat.

4. Will the seat heating be compatible?
In PQ there is a seat heating module which is installed under the driver's seat, that connects to both driver's and passenger's seat heating elements and temperature sensors and is controlled by the climate control module.
In MQB there is no such module. Instead both seat's heating elements and temperature sensors are connected to the BCM.
I tried to install the heating module under the Passat B8 seat and connect it "the Golf Mk6 way", but it doesn't work. The climate control module doesn't show any faults, but the seats don't warm up. If anyone has an idea how to fix it, let me know.

5. Will the seat ventilation be compatible?
Driver's seat and passenger's seat ventilation work the same, no matter if PQ or MQB.
In PQ there is a switch for it on the side of the seat that directly controls the two fans. The switch is simply connected to 12V.
In MQB the two fans are connected to the BCM and are controlled by buttons on the climate control unit.

I didn't find the time to do this yet, but I'm optimistic that simply the PQ seat ventilation switch must be retrofitted into the side of the seat and connected to 12V to make it work. Will update when I did it.
Side Note: Since I chose "ErgoComfort" seats that come with the extendable thigh support, they didn't come with ventilation feature. Which is basically one fan in the seat cushion and one fan in the backrest cushion. I decided to retrofit it anyways, leaving out the fan in the seat cushion.

6. Will the Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) be compatible?
Driver's seat and passenger's seat electronics work the same, no matter if PQ or MQB.
It's simply connected to 12V. Easy! You can attach
a) a DVD-Player-Screen-Combo
b) a iPad adapter, which also requires a mount and an iPad. I decided to go this route, see pic:
ipad bracket.png

7. Will the rear footwell illumination compatible?
Driver's seat and passenger's seat electronics work the same, no matter if PQ or MQB.
It's simply connected to the front footwell illumination. Or BCM connector B, pin 50.

And that's it :-) Not exactly plug-and-play, but the option to fit various MQB seats into our PQ cars allow us to get creative. I'd love to see your retrofits!

If you're in the position, could you connect the MQB module, and connect only the +30 and GND and see if the adjustment and massage works?

Great guide, really interesting. That iPad holder seems a bit bulky, do you have a photo with it installed on the seat?

Nice and clear topic. But, I can't find if the seats just bolt in or if they have to be mechanically adjusted.

I'm hoping you can help me, I have 2 (yes, two) sets of MQB seats, each from 2019 Tiguan's. One set is driver only fully electric and passenger manual with heating, the other set is R-Line both fully electric.

My problem is that one of the seats has stopped working fully. I'm afraid to use the memory buttons on the other 2 seats because of this.

Seat 1: The seat I have working with so far. From Tiguan 1. Appears to be the same as R-Line just no emblem or white stitching. Full electric with memory buttons.

Seat 2: The drivers seat from Tiguan 2. R-Line emblem, white stitching full electric with memory buttons.

Seat 3: The passenger seat from Tiguan 2. R-Line emblem, white stitching full electric with memory buttons.

I was testing seat 1 with direct battery power and it was all working until I tried using the memory buttons. When I pressed a memory button, the seat started moving for 1 second and then stop. I did this a few times and tried to set the memory buttons. Still had the same response, seat move for 1 second and stop.

I stopped trying the memory buttons and continued using the manual controls for another 30 seconds or so. Suddenly the seat completely stopped responding. I have a lot more detail in this thread I created https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/37493/
