There is no such button that mere users can press. However, the forum software has the functionality necessary to do so, in compliance with GDPR regulations, and I have just used it.

It's difficult to find now that his username is no longer a link, but he had posted pictures of the interface he was using and needless to say, it was not legitimate.

Never said this boss..but would it hurt if i do admit being a VCDS pirate from 2010-11 until 2015 ? I have like hundreds of pirate scans man, i didn't even know that a real licensed VCDS existed until 2015 , i was thinking that was it :). However, to somehow wahs my hands of it, OBD2 diagnostics took off around year 2008-2009 in Romania and i've become a part of the trend in 2010-11 or so.. :D
EDIT : now that i think back to it..i think we were only 5-6 guys doing street diagnosis on cars for like 3-4 years

No, not at all. I have no problem with reformed pirates. Several people here who I consider valuable contributors are in that category.

That puts a sobering note on my starting plug in diagnostics at the end of the 1980's!

Well..since OBD2 unified manufacturers around the world in or around 2000-2001 -ish , i think it s not that far fetched that it took about 8 -9 yrs before private persons like me began to do this kind of work. I am sure that people in my country were used to less complicated cars for a good chunk of time since 1989 when we started to get some "foreign" cars in the country. That being said , mechanics used to repair the cars by simptoms rather than having help form diagnostic tools. And anyway , from 1990 up to nearly 2000 each car manufacturer had their own obd tool and type of socket. Mercedes had a big 38 pins/14 pins socket , bmw a 38 pins smaller socket ,renault had annother square socket , vw had 2+2 or something like that socket. After unified obd2 standard , the best multimanufacturer tool was Delphi but that tool was somewhere around 3-4 thousand dollars. Then there were the dealers who had their own diagnostic tools and people will go there. So this being said...2008-9 was really the time when private techs appeared in Romania perhaps just as @Uwe got started Rosstech , tired of superinflated dealer prices and the lack of a diy obd tool maybe for his VW s.. And since then , it really took off after 2012-13 when chinese clones of just about any diagnostic tool type flooded the market at crazy low prices. Nowdays you can find thousands of people here that are doing diagnostics as a hobby to make some extra cash. However , my full time job is diagnosis and sometimes clients come to me / or more experienced techs after they went to some novice that would not know to explain what this and that error means , they think that if they can tell a error that it..they fixed it. Many a times behind a said error stands another defect ...and they do not have the experience to check that. This is where i kick thier novice arses :) because i see anywhere between 8-15 cars a day and i take some for repairs and novices they see maybe 1-2 and send them to mechanic shops for repairs.

I started in the motor trade in 1966 and when Vauxhall used the first basic diagnostics around 1987 I thought this is great! Little did I know it was sucking me into a system of equipment purchases ( yes all those different connectors and harness' ) that would drain my bank account for the rest of my life.

Uwe began the adventure in 1999 when he could not work on his own 1997 GTi. In 2000 Ross-Tech was launched selling VAG-COM. Want to read the history? This is a good article:
An Enthusiastic Success

Its dated to be sure.. but still tells much of the story.
