Hello all,

What module controls and saves the electric steering wheel position? Can this module be reset?

Background: Car was not driven for 6 months while waiting for a transmission fix. Battery died completely.

Problem: After battery died, automatic electric Steering Wheel does not return to the correct location when the ignition is turned on. More accurately, steering wheel returns to the last set memory position 50% of the time, the other 50%, it returns to the proper extension, but then dips down. The seat memory positions for the seat work perfectly 100%, but 50% of the time, the steering wheel does not return to the last set position. This is the same for all 3 memory buttons.

Question 1: Is the Steering Wheel memory controlled by the Address 36: Seat Mem. Drvr or is it stored in some other module? This car is a 2001 and has a limited number of modules. If so, can this module be reset? It displays no fault codes.

Question 2: Is it possible that because we had to jump start the car several times, and the steering wheel button was set to on, is it possible some motor or memory in the steering column was damaged? I doubt the motor is an issue, because when manually used, the electric steering wheel works very well in all directions. Does Address 16: Steering wheel control steering wheel memory?

Question 3: Aside from the Address 36: Seat Mem. Drvr module, which is not displaying fault codes,...even if the seat memory works, is it possible the memory switch in the door has failed?

Fault Codes: Except for an engine mount code, no fault codes

FOB Keys: I have 2 sets of keys and one is set to memory position 1 and the other is set to memory position 2. When using each key, upon opening the doors, the seat returns to the proper position for that key. This has even been reset based on the manual, and both keys work.

Appreciate any insight you may have.

John

Even though you say there are no fault codes relevant to this problem, an Auto-Scan would be appreciated so we can see exactly what modules are installed in this car.

I suspect it is in the Driver's Seat Memory for that car, but it looks like those were rare enough that nobody ever documented them.

Can we get you to make Measuring Block maps for both 06 and 36 please?

Is the controller in the drivers door panel or on the seat itself?

With Recaros and does it also control mirror base settings too?

The faults in the Central locking, are most likely screwing with the ability of the seat memory to initiate.
It is not seeing the positions of the door properly before going night nights ( Sleep mode MA draw reduction )

Check wiring in door jams for damage.
Get the factory repair manual to test, and trace the current tracks with WD.

Thank you Jack.

I know the Seat Drivers Module is under the seat. I do not know where the Central Lock Module is located.

Never had a problem with the central locking system....so these codes are a surprise. I recently changed the central lock software code to unlock all doors at the same time as well as have the FOB key lower and raise the windows....and that worked well. Car has never taken on water....in preparation for the transmission rebulid, I opened up passengers side floor to make sure TCM was not wet. No water that I could see or feel. But I never opened up drivers side.

How involved would testing, and tracing the current tracks with WD be?

Jack.....I am very new to VCDS. Do you mean return the Central Lock Software to the default code?

Uwe.....based on the Measuring Block maps I sent, cannot you confirm if the steering wheel memory is controlled by the Driver's Seat Module 06?

Uwe. I am still trying to solve the steering wheel adjustment memory issue with my 2001 A6 4.2L. I sent you maps for the 06 Driver's Seat Module. In summary, two FOBs are keyed to memory settings 1 and 2 and perform perfectly, applying settings to seats and mirrors.....but steering wheel memory works perfectly 50% of the time, the other 50% steering wheel coming out properly but dips down. Also, when starting the car, the steering wheel returns to proper position 50% of the time.

1. Can you confirm or deny if the Driver's Seat Module controls Steering Wheel memory? I am starting to think not.
2. I have learned about a Steering Control Module 4DO 909 611 that does not come up on any scan....does this module control steering wheel memory?
3. Any thoughts on whether the faults in the Central locking, are most likely screwing with the ability of the seat memory to initiate for the steering wheel as another reader posted? Again, seat and mirror memory works fine.

John
