I have a w12 D3 that i picked up last year. Now that I have finally ordered a new tail light after caving in - initially the Light Bulb light lit up and so did the "BRAKE LIGHT" error. I have now replaced the tail that was giving the issue but now have new issues :eye_roll:


Init. Symptoms:
Car was doing fine in the snow then boom BRAKE LIGHT and the light for the bulbs went on at the same time. Driver (US) trunk light popped a bulb and the qtr panel light went off as well. All lights returned to normal op after a restart. I replaced the bulbs in the trunk light with one from an extra i had laying around and all was fine until I shifted the car into reverse then got the BRAKE LIGHT error again. The light seemed to work (minus the 4 leds) for a bit but I noticed recently that the whole light just didnt work as soon as i was in reverse but worked while braking only. Now the light gives no errors even with the light on until I put the car in reverse, then I get the Light bulb light on I cant stand it anymore. What should I look at fixing or can i just code the check out? the light seems to be working fine.

Also another side thing to note. While running the scans with the car in Accessory mode not running it killed the cars battery twice. If I drive there's no issue but for now I have to go jump it again and let the battery charge.

This is a 16 year old car. Have you checked for corrosion and contamination in the tail light assemblies and the wiring and connectors between them and the CCM? Don't forget the connector at the CCM itself.

Ill give that a look. I finally got the car started again and went for a spin. According the the girlfriend (and my own pre-trip inspection) the lights all work properly while stationary, while driving and while reversing/indicating. However I still have that error with a lightbulb and an X with an indication that its on the left side rear quarter panel light. When turning left it "clicks" twice as fast. The error immediately shows up when I put my foot on the brake to change into gear and is persistent after that, disappearing each time the car turns off/on. I saw 2people say they had similar on other forums and a quick 100m drive fixed it. I will clear codes again here in a moment and drop the updated scan if anything is different :(

I had a similar thing many years ago which turned out to be corrosion on the actual bulb holders in the cluster causing one bulb to 'earth' through the other, cure was to remove the cluster and thoroughly bench clean all the holders after removing the bulbs.

I have seen those suffer heat induced corrosion damage to the plug and bulb holder, for some odd reason usually on the left. What about the ABS pump saying it is defective?

I will check this tomorrow. I got a new battery today so was trying to get those lights working properly. They *work* they just aren't happy for whatever reason still.



I am still wondering if This could be the issue but I haven't had the time to fuss with it lately - hence the necroposting. I got yet another left, quarter panel mounted tail light still no cigar. I will try getting an inner (trunk mounted) light asap and give that a shot. It seems that and a new CCM helped the person in the linked thread - here's to hoping it's not yet another costly repair like the leaky transmission or blown up coolant line... or you know what, never mind *opens wallet* my "open or short to ground" also says 009 - Open or Short to Ground so I'll try that new light when I get a chance. Maybe Uwe will help me with a sweet discount code for my license transfer for the holidays ;) only joking but I will try to be more active here and will keep posting updates as they happen but the trans was the top priority to fix so had to wait on some parts and then moved across the country

Yet another update as promised. I was finally able to (I think) pinpoint the issue with the ground. The drivers side inner light (reverse and fog light on the trunk-US Spec): I took the light off the car, opened it up, and there was tons of corrosion in there. I also took the plug on the inside and noticed that one of the pins was bent and another one was stuck inside the other end of the connector (ripped off, could have been when I opened it, could have been a previous owner or shop)
I will order a new light here soon and post another update.

An update to the situation finally: I had someone at work solder this back together for me because I apparently cant solder to save my fucking life. The light (and all the lights) are currently working. Turns out it was in fact, that ground wire (brown) I also was able to finally tend to the parking sensor that died on the front of my car, but not after disaster struck where i tapped a pillar with the rear not realizing the sensors werent working but also destroyed the washer fluid lines going to my headlights. 6.00 and some heat shrink later I have for the first time in a long time no warning lights on my d3 - aside from needing to fill my washer res with fluid but I am currently waiting on the LiquiMoly concentrate from FCP Euro to get that done :)
