Hi everyone.

A few weeks ago, I was sitting in the parking garage in my 2016 MK7 while it was running before heading out, and suddenly the engine ran rough and the check engine light came on. I always have VCDS in my car, so I hooked it up and saw a misfire on cylinder 1. I tried to switch between the coil packs to see if it jumps in between cylinders, but the fault code never showed again. Since I replaced the spark plugs in my last maintenance, I figured it's time to replace the coil packs anyway (60,000 KM) since they looked pretty worn out and it's the number 2 cause for misfires.

I replaced them and haven't noticed any sudden behavior change, but the error never came back again. Today, I was sitting idle and my car didn't run rough but I heard a weird noise every few seconds that kept coming and going. I hooked up VCDS and noticed misfires fault codes that occurred exactly at the time I heard that sound.

Here's a full Auto-Scan. What do you guys think I should check next, considering both spark plugs and coil packs have been replaced and the wires look ok?

Coil packs really shouldn't be needed on five year old car with only 56,000 km on it, at least not unless they are a batch that is known to be problematical.

You say you've replaced the spark plugs and the coil packs. What was the source of the replacement parts?

What do your fuel trims look like?

Appreicate the quick reply.

The coil packs replacement was mainly for ruling out this cause and sort of some preventive maintenance. I got a retail price on them so I didn’t mind replacing them too. Both coil packs and spark plugs are NGK, genuine authentic parts from a well-respected parts store here in Israel.

I’ve seen VCDS YouTube videos on how to check fuel trims. Should I post the results here? What exactly am I looking for?

EDIT: After watching Ross-Tech videos (and included videos) on fuel trims I understand the general idea but I don't really understand the values themselves and what am I expecting. Also, no more measuring blocks so all I could find was:

  • Long-term fuel trim bank 1 idle
  • Short term adaptation of mixture formation bank 1

At -2.5%, that looks entirely fine.

I'd like to see one under load as well, but I'm having trouble finding that in the data for this ECU.

Another thought I had is spark plug wires. I don't suspect it's an air/fuel issue or else the car would throw another fault code.

The spark plug wires is the last thing I did not test.

Are there even spark plug wires in the Golf MK7? The coil sits on top of the spark plug so I'm not sure...

So considering the issue is not spark plugs or ignition coils as both been replaced by new OEM NGK ones, any other directions to look for then?

Needless to say the issue is intermittent and only seems to happen when idle (and weird hissing noise, which I'm not sure it has to do it with or not) so my direction is probably an air leak somewhere...

I tried to look for information online on how to read fuel trims but again it's a very complex matter and all the videos are old and refer to measuring blocks which are not supported by my car.

I can try to check them visually, but not sure how to test them further than that.

I uploaded a video of the engine noise in idle after a 40-minute drive. If you listen closely, you can hear the weird "roaring" noise that keeps coming back.


After I heard that noise, I immediately hooked up VCDS and the misfire fault showed at the same time that noise was playing.

I'm planning to do a compression test in my local garage later this week, so in the mean time I preformed a fuel pressure drop test:


As you can see, in working temperature, the pressure is ~14,000kPa and expands to ~22,500kPa after shutting down the engine and waiting for 6 minutes.

Results look okay to me (comparing to other videos I found online, besides the fact that mine is 14K while others are 4K to 8K) - but please let me know what you think.

As for the oil sample - I smelled the oil cap while performing the test and could not identify any gasoline smell. I read some stuff online, which suggested to smell the oil cap when the engine is cold so I'll try to do that again later today.
