Hi All,

This is likely going to be interesting as I delve into the deeper and more arcane aspects of my car's bad behaviour of late; so hello to all.

My car is a Skoda Octavia Mk2 FL 2.0 TDI VRS. it's been a great car for 155000 miles. Now its saying strange names which I worked out mean get a Ross-Tech VCDS device. And I did.

Now feel just a little bick sick and overwhelmed. I didn't image I had to become a VAG code scientist. I guess I have to try, but only managed to do two things so far. (1) change idle speed and (2) change over the headlight bias. It had somehow been changed to driving on the right when we actually drive on the left. I guess previous owner went abroad. Whatever.

But now my struggle is a lot worse than that by the look of things. I have to resolve headlight coding; it appears to have been removed! I can't understand how that might happen. And I have a DPF issue to resolve and I suspect it won't resolve until I fix a glow plug error.

Youre sure to see me asking some bloody stupid question showing how daft I am. I'll bear it and hopefully amongst all of you out here - all you crazy VAG enthusiasts, I'll meet those who've been down this road I'm on and know the answers, like the holy grail.

This ross-tech journey was really accidental. I thought I would buy a device to let me get into the codes on VAG cars and just toggle switches or something. But the software is like a logic bomb just went off in our living room and themany hours spent in the car idling, looking at these screens is mystifying us, why it is like it is? Taken the wind from our sails.

By the way I have a HEX-NET V2 so shouldn't be short of power. Just short of a code book of some sort.

Hi, and thanks for the welcome.

An outline then; my car is in a kind of partial limp mode. Limited in power but not totally limping. I can achieve 50-70mph and maintain 65mph on level motorway here in UK.

I couldn't contemplate using the dealer to solve these problems now my car is old (2011) and they quoted me more than it is actually worth to resolve the issues; this car now needs to stand on its own four wheels so to speak so I decided to invest in VCDS. I'm sure that is a wise decision even though with my lack of knowledge that's a painful acquisition right now. I am confident it will change though

My isssues are DPF light, EML/CEL light, glowplug light, yellow oil can with Service Workshop message on ignition cycle and finally a check lights light but all lights work. It appears though that one of the headlights cannot get communication.

I would suggest taking a look at what's going on with oil temperature in MVB 007.2 and the status of the DPF in MVB 108.

I added the additional information to see whether it is indicating anything else. I was in fact just trying to confirm I was getting a temperature before the DPF, but I thought I didn't see a temperature for after the DPF.

Oil temp seems a little high considering all the other temps are between 20 and 23°. I would monitor/log the temps during a drive where you got everything fully up to temperature.

The DPF numbers are a bit puzzling. No ash at all at 155,000 miles? Yet quite a bit of soot. Check Differential Pressure Sensor readings in MVB 100. Post what you see there both with key on, engine off, and at idle.

You might also try clearing faults and then attempt to run a regen while driving. Hint: Adaptation channel 013; instructions should appear in a yellow info balloon.

Letting the car idle for many hours is generally a bad idea. Get a battery charger! :)

Well, a charger that can supply sufficient current to keep the battery's voltage from dropping with key on, engine off would qualify, as a "support unit", no?

Well, a charger that can supply sufficient current to keep the battery's voltage from dropping with key on, engine off would qualify, as a "support unit", no?

Oil temp seems a little high considering all the other temps are between 20 and 23°. I would monitor/log the temps during a drive where you got everything fully up to temperature.

The DPF numbers are a bit puzzling. No ash at all at 155,000 miles? Yet quite a bit of soot. Check Differential Pressure Sensor readings in MVB 100. Post what you see there both with key on, engine off, and at idle.

You might also try clearing faults and then attempt to run a regen while driving. Hint: Adaptation channel 013; instructions should appear in a yellow info balloon.



Letting the car idle for many hours is generally a bad idea. Get a battery charger! :)

So I followed your guidance and whilst doing so the DPF fault suddenly vanished. I had been filling to the brim with diesel and soon as I started to drive, I think possibly the moment I put it in gear, the fault disappeared. I had seen a situation developing where the DPF light started not to light so quickly after turning on ignition, so I had a feeling something was changing. The DPF was then cleaned by a national garage company offering this service. It didn't appear to work. But maybe it was working - just not instantly or in a few hours.

I noticed something about the software seems to catch me out and prevent my chosen option from being carried out, if I happen to select another function even on the same data card. I was in fact selecting the adaptation 12233 to try to heat the DPF back into life, perhaps if I could get enough engine speed up and hold it up for 15 minutes or so at a time.

Right now I don't know what the magic keystroke is that triggered DPF to turn back on. I continued to drive over 90 miles until the regeneration appeared to stop. I then did some test and found the figures were now quite low. You asked for some more information on addresses 7 and 100 after engine up to normal stabilised temperature, with engine both running and off. Here's the info plus full report of remaining codes. Does it appear that the ECU knows both the leve and temperature of the oil?

Hard to be sure. That might just be a confusingly named sensor in the fault code description. If your engine has an oil dipstick, it probably doesn't have an actual oil level sensor.

They refer to it as a thermal sensor but I believe I interrogated it in one of the screens and looked at actual info. Level was 'OK' or something like that and temp was in fact temp! I'll find it. What did you think about what it says because it seems to point to instrument cluster? Might I have to open the instrument cluster and look inside?

What's your opinion now about the DPF figures? Is 5mbar at idle alright? Does it suggest the exhaust gas is not getting held up too much?

I have to take the headlight now and see if I can find out why its not communicating. The lights are operating normally except they now do not self-level or provide AFS Bend Lighting! It says there are five errors on it but none of that makes any sense to me. Any ideas?

Question though: Is this the original DPF on the car? The car looks to have ~157,000 miles on it, yet the oil ash volume shows up as zero...:confused:

You are most observant Uwe, the DPF is showing as zero, but before I went to the national garage chain it had a figure there, I believe of 138ml. Garage said that means all the ash must be disposed of by a chemical treatment otherwise the engine can't breath right. I guess they have reset it after emptying out all the crud. The guy was brilliant explaining the difference between soot and ash, as he said there is a ratio between soot and ash based on a formula. He asked whaty mpg I was getting before the trouble and put it in his machine. This was a cube-like appliance that apparently creates hydrogen which they feed thriugh the engine during the cleaning process and then they put some chemical inside the DPF called MANNOL (not sure if trade names are alright here!). The interesting thing is that this work didn't appear to work, but I can be no authority on whether it was just working slowly. After that I put a cheap bottle of DPF cleaner in the fuel according to recommendation. The really interesting thing is how the fault cleared. It was sudden, over a few minutes between key off and key on. I think the change happen when I selected S. Normally I would expect to put my foot to the floor to pull off, but this time I nearly broke my neck! All the power was back and some.

I am not sure how much I believe of the numbers the computer originally supplied to VCDS. It doesn't appear logical that one minute my DPF is stuffed (full of ash and carbon) and the next, it appears better than it ever has been. Where might the ash go? All I saw at the garage was some smoke; not a lot. I therefore suspect that the DPF error numbers may not have really been true. I'll see if I can find anything in earlier scans, but I do recall numbers like 45 and 55. The device that measures the back pressure is just a sensor if I'm not mistaken. So, if that's true and its not a deduced number, the sensor detected something vastly different between key off and key on at the filling station. It's fascinating. I wonder how many out there in the VCDS multiverse have contentious views about how some ECU readings are derived.

I'm taking my headlight out this evening to see if I can see any reason there is no communucation with it. Im suspecting there aren't really 5 faults, but that the power or communucatioin issue causes the other four faults!

Meanwhile onto the oil sensor. Is it possibke that it too must be coded? Curious because there is a pointer to the instrument cluster. The oil temperature shows in the cluster so it seems the sensor is powered and not the victim of a damaged wire that has so often, in my research at least, plagued others with VAG cars. It looks like its due to a manufacturing defect; the wires from the sensor go through some wire stay where they are constantly moving in micrometres over an uninsulated metal bridge and short to ground. This is a totally ridiculous and unnecessary defect that should have been rectified by VAG for affected vehicles in a technical bulletin. It wouldn't require much corrective action. However,, its hard for many owners to start with the assumption of a damaged wire when sensor replacement seems the obvious first course of action. But then the vast majority do not have such a code reader like VCDS and therefore can't even follow a trail like I am, when I consider there is a relationship to my instrument cluster because VCDS further mentions under 'Instruments' a fault there.

It would definitely be interesting to know if there is a coding for oil level thermal sensor.

Here's a bit of info I extracted that you will be interested in Uwe. Is it fair to conclude from this that the lines for both level and temp are intact?

Just a quick question really. Did you get to feell at home with VCDS realtively quickly from your first intro to it? Are you from a garage background or an Audi enthusiast more than anything? I just had an interesting experience with the software. A while scratching my head until I put it in DOS mode and appreciate the software as rather raw power than anything highly consumable by ordinary citizens. Several times I tried to get my DPF to regenerate both by driving using 12233 and also idling using 27971 and got nowhere with either. The software didn't confirm I was carrying out the commands issued. I am also unaware on this next point whether there is a sequence to this command which can easily get cancelled without any warning if one perhaps uses functions like log or graph after requesting regen. I am imagining a top down sequential approach but when I noticed that other functions still appear accessible after issuing those commands I wondered whether they are functions that ought to be activated first.

Anyway, you might have read above my experience of the DPF suddenly coming back to life. I cannot think what I did differently when requesting 12233 to regen DPF whilst driving than the several times I had tried exactly the same thing before. All that took place was a seemingly failed chemical job at a national chain of garages that say DPFs don't need to be scrapped as long as the ash they contain can be moved and didn't turn into something resembling concrete! Well, I didn't see any clouds of ash whilst this hydrogen and chemical process was being done; just a little greyish white smoke. The garage put a litre of some chemical inside the DPF with a kind of spray gun. Then they generated hydrogen and fed it to the engine for about 20 minutes. At the end of that I understood the DPF would come back over the next few miles, but that didn't happen. That's where ROSS-TECH VCDS came in. So frustrated and not inclined to just believe everything written about the necessity to junk blocked DPFs, I felt I had to get closer to understanding rather than just accepting, especially as I was reading more about the role of chemicals in restoring DPFs. Anyway, over 200 miles after the failed Hydrogen DPF clean, I had lost all hope of an easy and obvious solution. After getting my head round VCDS just enough to perform something useful with it, there was a big change. @Uwe asked me to get some information about DPF differential pressure, and it was whilst I was out driving at an enforced snai-like pace, that everything changed. Uwe must have suspected things were not all as they appeared to be. I managed to get my car to drive along the motorway and maintain >4K rpm, then pulled in for fuel. It was on the next start that everything changed; not just back to normal but feels more powerful than it was before any trouble started. Funny thing is after I had serviced my head gasket (which was a rather involved job due to the way the engine is designed), I had cleaned the whole engine bay with a power wash having blocked up oil and water channels and put tissue in the cylinders, when, after I got everything back together, a friend asked was I sure I didn't get water in the DPF!. A bit late by that time, but needless to say the engine started without too much complaining. Maybe there was water inside. It wasn't obvious there was. I had done a lot on this service. I called it a major, includng change the plastic manifold because it had worn out. Not sure if you know the plastic manifold design? Its a design for failure because the intake flaps rotate on a metal rod that runs directly through the plastic without any bearings or bushes. That is essentially negligent omission by VAG. To change the manifold is not much work short of checking the head and changing the head gasket, so I decided to do that because I could service the valves and ports. I got the head polished up and cleaned, removed and cleaned the valves and refitted with new stem seals. I opened and cleaned the throttle body and the EGR and looked inside the electronics where gears and electronics combine and cleaned all of that too. But I made a mistake there too. I think the ECU turned off its functions for the EGR and the throttle body didn't work either! I think there's a dark side to how engine mangement is done. Its very clever, but if you're not alert to the possibility of msyterious happenings you can spend a long time looking for something that doesn't exist. I think there's something to be said for disconnecting the battery when doing any kind of work like this and shorting the ground and positive leads together for a few minutes. Some say one only needs to turn on an electrical consumer and residual energy in ECU capacitors is discharged and so too is the memory.

Everything was reassembled using ZX1 nano-particle oil and the daft manifold had special grease on flap rotation rod plus I also installed the special over-rotation limiter I discovered from watching Humble Mechanic. So when everything back together it was very deflating to find the computer had faults in almost every moduie. It appears to know when parts have been disconnected and records the failure to respond to calls from the ECU as a component failure, despite reconnecting all the modules. Of course, I had made a mistake of letting the ECU see the parts had been removed. Cutting down a long story I got all the codes sorted out using consumer grade tools except the codes I still had when I invested in the ROSS-TECH device. Now my DPF has inexplicably cleared I have only one code on the engine module (which relates to implausible signal from oil sensor - and doesn't set a check engine light) and five mysterious codes that occurred after I removed my headlight with the battery and ignition still on. Silly fool me. But now I know VAG is watching our every move!

Just got these two puzzles to solve now and I feel lighter in my mind knowing I now have no fault that precludes the car passing it's annual MOT. If I had not got a result with the DPF it would have been an automatic fail and the cost of the dealer estimate was more than the value of the car. How anyone can think there might be nearly £5K of work and parts involved is shocking. I believe this is how the manufacturer puts pressure into funding dealers and instigating sales of replacement vehicle. When one is without knowledge one is fully stuffed; there is no other authority that can inform you. Worse than that, any hunt you might go on with independent workshops is very suject to their knowledge being up to scratch, before one starts funding them. And this is how I came to invest a not insignificant sum of money in the ROSS-TECH VCDS. In the longer term, to avoid stealers and be in sufficient knowledge about faults, it seemed to be a no brainer. Even on first use and solving the problem of the DPF has made it worth while. Now the tool can only pay me back the longer I own it and put it to good use. I am hoping to learn more useful codes to enhance my Octavia VRS but it seems there are secret codes that one must discover. In my VCDS at least, not a lot of enhancing codes are there, in spite of the car essentially being a Golf RS / Audi A4.

I find it all very curious and interesting. Now I have had some success I feel energised and more enthusiastic about VCDS. Not only the VCDS, but it appears to me there is a Company founder here who seems to have a depth of knowledge how to follow a trail and what to instigate.

I noitice that some people with oil sensor fault talk about coding it out, but what about re-coding it? I've seen some people appear to indicate that one can rewrite the same code for a component and it has the effect of renewing the code or repairing a corrupt code. Can anyone here walk me through the steps I need to follow to code something like an oil sensor? I have a sensor that appears to record both temperature and level. At least I see the temperature in the dash but I also get the yellow oil can that says sensor - workshop! So, effectively the temperature seems OK, but the level is not showing properly or should I say its just not showing.

Yeah, I think that's OK.

Question though: Is this the original DPF on the car? The car looks to have ~157,000 miles on it, yet the oil ash volume shows up as zero...:confused:

Initially Uwe, I was of the understanding that once ash has filled the DPF that's the end of the DPF, but now, I suppose like so many things, I have a little more knowledge that that's not necessarily true if one services it the correct way. Have you come across this inconsistent DPF ash volume before?

I'm not aware of anything that can be "re-coded" about this sensor.

Sure, when people have lied to the car and told it they've installed a new DPF, when in fact they haven't. Cleaning can be very effective if the DPF is plugged up with soot, but I'm not sure how well it works for ash.

Thanks Uwe. That's very interesting. A new concept in marital relations; lying to one's car! But seriously then, sounds like this is worth investigating a bit more and see what the actual position is. If National Garaage A had done a procedure that eliminated soot and ash with this hydrogen and chemical process then perhaps there's no difference between a used DPF and a new one except one is not new and the other is. From the car's perspective it may not be any different but from a safety point of view or actual emissions then its worth knowing more. I know that I did not observe anything like ash coming out the exhaust when the procedure was being carried out. Maybe others who have had a commercial clean have observed this. All I saw was something like some greyish white smoke. Maybe ash is vapourised.

If Garage B does a procedure to clean the DPF but not soecifically any solution for ash, then lie to the car, I anticipate that could be problematical. I'm not completely sure if there are not circumstances that can trigger DPF light that are not completely accurate. Maybe something like a head gasket leak that is then fixed or something like that. I wonder if any other members might have experience on this. I'll put some feelers out on other VAG dedicated forums. I guess its about education. I suspect Garage A couldn't cause an obvious risk to a customer of their car catching on fire by doing the procedure. Presumably they have VCDS so must see the same warning Ive seen about this. I see also there is no functions that stops a regen being requested if the DPF is already well below service limits. I'm interested in this subject Uwe so I'll keep my focus on it and see what I can find out.
