My Son's 2011 VW Golf, 1.4 tsi stopped whilst driving it yesterday and wouldn't start. I went down to it around 40 minutes after and it fired right up and runs fine.

Did a scan and got "000135 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure, P0087 - 000 - Too Low - Intermittent" error, autoscan here;

So, low fuel pressure it would seem however, I took it for a 10 mile test drive and all was fine and it was fine last night when my Son was driving so all seems good for now but I would like to get to the root of this as we don't want it breaking down miles from anywhere in the middle of the night!

I checked the fuel pressure which is around 50 bar at idle, rising to over 100 at higher rpm, not sure what it should be or what else I should be looking at?

He will be bringing it to me later today for further investigation, any ideas or suggestions of probable cause would be most welcome?

When it died, was it a clean kill like some one has flipped the ignition off? Of was it a sputtery death that got worse and worse over said death of engine?

Generally speaking, if the HPFP went out, the engine will still idle. But if the lift pump in the fuel tank stopped working then it will truely be a dead engine.

A clean kill, car just stopped dead as if it was switched off but all the electrics working and then wouldn't start, I assume the fuel supply stopped suddenly? but then it was fine when I got to it and was still good today.

My Son's 2011 VW Golf, 1.4 tsi stopped whilst driving it yesterday and wouldn't start. I went down to it around 40 minutes after and it fired right up and runs fine.

Did a scan and got "000135 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure, P0087 - 000 - Too Low - Intermittent" error, autoscan here;

He will be bringing it to me later today for further investigation, any ideas or suggestions of probable cause would be most welcome?
in addition to what Jeff has said,my thoughts are on fuel filter,intank fuel delivery unit and if J538 is getting too hot to touch,it is worthwhile to check fuel filter bar rating which should be 6.6 bar,if filter is being clogged and lastly a manual fuel pressure gauge to check output of intank fuel pump

Interesting, what & where is J538, so I can check for it being hot?

Further to this, car was fine for weeks but the other night it did the same: stopped dead and wouldn't restart however 5 minutes later it was OK again?

Autoscan shows the exact same error "000135 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure, P0087 - 000 - Too Low - Intermittent" but I can not find any fault?

There is a fuel pressure regulator at the back/on top of the cylinder head on which one of the pins in the connector had a little green corrosion that I have cleaned and car appears to be fine now. It also has slight signs of oil or similar stains (maybe leakage?) and it does get hot due to it's location, does anyone know if this is a likely culprit?

Returning to this, for anyone who maybe interested and (hopefully) closure.

Car stopped again, twice more in fact but was always OK whenever I got hold of it.

One thing in common with all the stops was that it did it 2-3 minutes after having started the car, having checked everything as best I could I came to the conclusion that it was a failure to get fuel to the HPFP on the cylinder head and, in fact I simulated the exact problem by disconnecting the in-tank/lift pump electrics and then starting and driving the vehicle - it came to a fairly abrupt stop after around 3 minutes/a mile or so down the road with almost nil fuel rail pressure.

I had established the HPFP and regulator were OK, disconnecting the regulator gave me 130+bar of fuel pressure and when all connected I get a nice, steady 50 bar at idle which rises commensurately with RPM.

So having established fuel was not getting to the HPFP on the occasions it cut out, left me with one of two problems; blocked/faulty filter or lift pump not working. I replaced the filter which was last changed 15,000 miles ago, I actually cut open the old one to see if it was blocked but it looked like new and the internal regulator seemed OK but worth doing anyway as it is a consumable item and needed to be eliminated from the enquiry.

On examining the lift pump, all appeared to work fine with the pump cycling for 3-4 seconds with ignition on and then running whilst engine running. To try to get it to fault I ran/stopped it over and over and it never failed, I have no way of monitoring the output pressure (I don't think there is a sensor other than in the fuel rail?).

I discovered that the fuel pump electrics consist of a controller/relay in the plug cable which I suspected might be the culprit, seemed more likely that something a little more complex than the pump might be the source of an intermittent fault? and as this controller/cable is fairly inexpensive I took a chance and bought a new one.

Immediately on connecting it the pump was noticeably noisier, presumably because running faster? (unless it's singing it's swan song?), so much so that sitting in the driver's seat with the rear seat fitted on top of the pump, you can actually hear it cycle when ignition is switched on - something you couldn't do before, in fact even close up to the pump you could barely hear it running before.

I presume the controller has some kind of variable output to alter pump speed, or is the old one just weak? either way it has been fine since so I'm quietly confident that this was the problem.

I suppose I could reconnect the old controller and check the output to confirm if it is low but my Son's got the car back so it's not here and as long as it continues to be OK I'm not going to bother, thanks for the tips. :thumbs:

Awesome,this is the J538 intank fuel pump controller I aforementioned,your car isnt equipped with low fuel pressure sender G410 so checking low pressure side requires the use of a manual gage,anyway thanks for sharing

Those modules have been known to fail (and occasionally melt/catch fire :eek:)

You are correct; The ECU sends a PWM signal to that module and the module varies the power to the low pressure pump.

I did notice that it was warm to the touch but wasn't sure if that was normal or not?
