Hi,
I'm looking for some advice/guidance, I have a 2006 Audi 2.0 TDI DSG (BKD engine). It goes into limp mode with the following message.

16683 - Boost Pressure Regulation
P0299 - 000 - Control Range Not Reached
Freeze Frame:
RPM: 2415 /min
Torque: 240.0 Nm
Speed: 75.0 km/h
Load: 94.5 %
Voltage: 13.83 V
Bin. Bits: 11000000
Absolute Pres.: 2499.0 mbar
Absolute Pres.: 1346.4 mbar

This only seems to happen when the car is in 5th/6th gear.

The turbo actuator was removed and checked, it holds vacuum and moves freely.
The EGR cooler vacuum valve also holds vacuum.
All of the turbo pipes have been removed and checked for holes/leaks, seals all look good and when connected there is no movement between the connected pipes.

The vacuum pipes on the black solenoid have been vacuum tested:

the pipe that goes to the EGR cooler vacuum valve holds vacuum.
the pipe which goes to the turbo actuator holds vacuum.
the pipe which goes to the EGR valve holds vacuum.
the pipe that goes to the tandem pump holds vacuum.
the pipe which goes to the MAF sensor does not hold vacuum at all, I assume this is normal?
the pipe which goes to the vacuum reservoir (black ball) holds vacuum.

whilst the actuator was off, the movement in the turbo vanes was checked, the arm moved freely from top to bottom with very minimal effort.

Is there anything I've missed?

I understand there is a boost sensor, could this be an issue based on the message which is being logged?

could the black solenoid valve, where the vacuum pipes connect be faulty? is there a way I can test this?

any advice would be great, TIA

Sounds like it's not making the amount of boost it should. You can check that in MVB 011, where field 2 is the specified pressure and field 3 is the actual (measured) pressure. It might make sense to log that data to see how it behaves short of setting a fault code.

Does the turbo spin freely?

Sorry, I wasn't supposed to copy and paste all of the logging, The error was logged during the logging, it was logged at 2583 rpm (engine speed) so I've filtered the logging for this engine speed.

unfortunately the time is not time stamped, it's captured in seconds, however, I'm confident the limp mode started in the 400 plus seconds, this leaves 3 entries in the log which could be 417.56, 442.9, or 443.07.


I also noticed the control duty cycle only sitting at 76% at idle,

what controls this parameter?

Hmm. That's not quite the data I was expecting to see in Group 011. Field 2 is supposed to be specified pressure, not charge pressure control status. So I'm quite confused by the data in field 2. We you fooling around in Basic Settings in that group?

Hi VM, considering the age and mileage, and also that you have thoroughly checked the compressor side of the plumbing, I would also take a look at the exhaust side of the turbo ; primarily the interface or connection from the exhaust manifold or "up-pipe" to the turbo itself (turbine side). If there is any leak here, it will be difficult to reach or build boost.
Does your exhaust note sound any different when you get into boost?

Hi Stef,

I’ve never listened to the note of the exhaust to be honest, I did inspect the area around the exhaust side of the turbo when I removed the actuator, but I’ll double check again to see if there’s any sign of a leak.

@Uwe, is there any way to configure the values that are displayed in group 11, my understanding is I need to display the actual boost v specified boost?

I believe a chip-tuner can do that. Is your ECU "tuned"?

My documentation says that Group 011 should have both, and that was exactly what was in Group 011 in just about all 4-cylinder TDIs of that approximate vintage, so I'm rather puzzled what's going on with yours.

Hi NEtech, You are correct, in measuring blocks-08, in group 11 there is option which shows boost pressure actual and boost pressure specified.

I will try to replicate the issue and capture the values in the log, i did, log the values at idle, putting my foot on the accelerator and below is what was captured,

are the two columns mixed up? i.e specified always seems to be more than actual?

you will also notice that actual around 5 seconds hits zero, this is the time I revved the car whilst in idle?

let me know if the snapshot below reveals anything or if I need to run it again and capture the values when it goes into limp mode.

the other thing is that I don't get any dash lights, no EML or flashing glow light.

I've captured the log during the car going into limp mode, same error as before, but this time at 2142RPM

If I marry the RPM with the log file and filter it, I get the values in the table below (I've kept some values before this RPM in case there is something relevant here).

i'm guessing that the under boost around where there are a number of 0's in the specified column

OR if the logging columns are incorrect, these 0 values could be the actual values being logged?

1) first question - are the columns the wrong way round?
2) is it correct to say that the under boost occurred at where the RPM is 2142 and 0 value in the boost column?
3) where are these values being read from (what sensor)
4) what should I be looking for next?

Actual clearly doesn't rise to meet specified. Actual is topping out under 1350 when specified is at 2499, which confirms what the freeze-frame data for the fault code showed. Since you've already checked pretty much all the mechanical stuff (plumbing and turbo actuator), my next suggestion would be to hook up a mechanical pressure gauge and use it to verify that manifold pressure is indeed as low as the ECU is seeing it.

Hi Uwe, Thanks for the feedback, I've got a pressure gauge however, where would I need to hook this up to in order to get the reading?

Somewhere on the intake manifold, or to the plumbing just before, but definitely on the pressure side of the turbo.
