2012 Amarok "No ASAM data"

Hi,

I had been working on a 2012 Amarok today. I have gone out to the vehicle to supply and code an additional key. Nothing out of the ordinary programmed key directly with Abrites.

I did a VCDS scan while onsite as the customer did mention he had some trouble starting his vehicle recently. An unusual fault popped up under instruments that there was no .ROD file found.

Both new and original keys work perfectly however as you can see in the autoscan the ASAM fault in address 17

VCDS advised to upload a full autoscan when encountering this issue.

I scanned the car on the latest stable SW 21.3.0 and also the Beta SW 21.7.1

The owner is not the original owner of the vehicle and does not know if anything had been replaced previously.

Just looking for some general insight and any useful imformation about the error would be greatly appreciated.

There’s some strange ASCII characters in the ASAM string. Could it be that the Abrites tool has corrupted the EEPROM?

Some 3rd party tool was used to read/write the instrument cluster/immobilizer memory, in the process a memory location which stores the ASAM ID was overwritten with incorrect data. We have seen this several time and have (in all cases) verified that this was an issue introduced with the 3rd party tool being used. This effects all diagnostic tools and is a mistake that tool manufacturer should address. We will not address this with a workaround or similar. Get the instrument cluster fixed and everything will work again.

Fun fact: At least in some cases the people involved confirmed, that this was due to pirated/illegal copies of said 3rd party tool being used.

Fair enough. I do use genuine AVDI interface and software. Not to say they are not without their own software issues particularly when updating the tool it can have issues that were previously fine in earlier builds.
I do find the VAG software quite reliable to be fair and use it as my go to tool for most vehicles. Any suggestions on repairing the issue?

Thanks for your reply. I noticed this also but have never come across this before. I mean it's definitely possible it occured during key learning but I have used this tool extensively to add keys to many vehicles on this platform without issue previously.

I read through the threads you shared, and yeah they are consistent with identical corrupted ASAM identifier.

I may just replace and adapt the cluster. I will check the service book history to see if there's any funny business going on first.

Avdi support is severely underwhelming. You are actually required to pay for support package to enable you to send them their own logs and report bugs within their software.

I highly doubt they would even offer a solution, if in fact, the issue had been caused by their tools method of putting the cluster into 'service mode' to introduce a new transponder ID.

Going to chalk this up as a loss and just keep it as something to check for first in future.

Just updating this thread in case somebody else runs into the same issue.

First I tried to write new data to the original cluster which I could do, but the ASAM/ROD error was still present.

In the end I just got a new compatible used cluster. Wrote the config data from original to donor and adapted odometer to match.

All working fine without the ASAM/ROD issue now.

I don't believe AVDI corrupted the original cluster. The donor had no keys and I had to put it into service mode to read/write data on bench and no repeat of the ASAM/ROD issue here or ever previously.

Lesson learnt even if I have done keys to 100's of these VDO clusters, in future I'll scan each one first.

Update:
After just a few short weeks of practicing pre-scaning every VW before adding keys and I have run into this exact issue again.
Only difference is this time I found the error was 100% there before I have even plugged my AVDI in.
I questioned the customer and he was convinced that someone had tampered with the odometer before he had purchased the vehicle and looking at the service history it reflects exactly that.
He also told me someone from the area has recently been charged with odometer tampering in the area.
Based on this info I am going to assume the other Amarok was exactly the same scenario just the odometer wasn't as obvious as this one clearly.
