Good Day everyone,

How do I use VCDS to turn on Ambient Light for door when it is closed. IT works fine when door is open. However I am unable to turn it on nor am I able to adjust it or the lights in the door handles. They are always on . The MMI feature is only able to adjust the footwell lights and the cupholder lights (front). The dealer is tryinf=g to convince me that thhis is normal operation. I am not convinced. I have seen on other forums where they say this is a factory fault.

Help!

@ChrisdraggerS3: Hi - I'm trying to understand your question and I'm not succeeding, so I need your help (please)
I assume by "Ambient light", you mean the lamp in overhead fitting (between the left/right reading lamps) that the WD calls W1 - Front interior light.

You say "IT works fine when door is open. However I am unable to turn it on" - but of course you can do this (independent of the door status) via the overhead switch located near the lamp.

So, what extra control function are you seeking exactly?

Don

PS:I don't have access to the WD for your particular vehicle - but for Audi 8V series diagram in my possession, the wiring arrangement for W1 appears to be very rudimentary.

Hi
I am talking about the LED strip that is located just at the top of the Bang n Olufsen speaker.
I am not able to independently turn it on when I go into the MMI>MENU>car>Vehicle settings>Background lighting>Door brightness .
The LED strip only activates when I open the door.
This is not normal operation. This LED strip should be able to activate along with footwell lights and cup holder lights once the headlights are on.

let me know if I have clarified and you are able to help

thanks

@ChrisdraggerS3: Arrhhh......... yes, now I understand, thank you for clarifying.

I think you mean these (pic from a RoW A3 8v):

lL8MFAJ.png

If these are the correct lights, then they are directly wired to the respective door modules - they are not part of the BCM.

I'm more than happy to be advised otherwise by more knowledgeable forum colleagues - but AFAIK, the behavior of these lights cannot be modified - alas

Don

Thanks for your input! I await further confirmation that it is hardwired to the door.

I agree with DV52. Yes B&O Speaker Light is directly wired into door module.
8V has individual pins for Ambient Light, Door Handle Light, Warning/Entry Light and B&O Speaker Light in door module. Each can be activated through Long Coding for individual door module with VCDS.
Ambient in Door would power on with door open, or at night with Light Sensor. During night if MMI menu is activated, light can be powered Off.
Module 09 allows for Ambient and Door Handle to be combined or work separate. If separate Door Handle, it stays on as if it is on Terminal 30, On at Key Unlock, On all the time with car on and powers off when car is Locked.
No control of Warning/Entry Light.
I don't remember seeing anything in 09 for B&O and there is definitely no light channel for them.

If you want MMI control you can consider wiring it to ambient pin but I am not sure if Wattage requirements would be same, but B&O Speaker Light certainly can't be requiring more than Ambient lights.

Hi

I have had a quick look on audi-sport posts about B&O Speaker Light and there are some people who have complained of similar issue to Audi and not getting much help. If you have MMI menu active and have Door option then normal behaviour should be as you expect, to be On with door Open and On during night with headlight etc and dimming control via MMI Background Lighting.

You mention of Door Handle Light as well and I have given my experience of its standalone behaviour above.
Through module 09 You can try and make Door Handle to work with Ambient.. The option is in Adaptation in Ambient Light adaptation group and see how that works out. There are some Ambient adaptation in 09 that I can't make sense of but you can explore each one separately to see what happens.

Like I said above, 4 separate pins in door module for different lights so maybe it is wired to wrong pin. Your B&O seems to be behaving like Warning/Entry Light. You might have to rewire it to ambient pin.

The above diagram has all door lights connections. Note B&O is on 20pin connector and others are on 32pin connector.
The behaviour of door handle as you describe is exactly what I found it out to be as well and as there is no other adaptation for it I would say that is how it is meant to behave if it on pin 3. But if you access through module 09 adaptation, there are few adaptations starting with words Ambient Lights, and one of those is Door Handle Light with Ambient Light. Active that, even if you don't have ambient lights. That will give you MMI control on it and also it won't stay On all the time.

For your B&O If it is on pin3 of 20pin connector and it behaves as you say have described then you can try pin8 of 32pin connector or even pin3, double up door handle. However, I am not considering wattage requirements here But from experience Door Handle pin3 supplies very low power but pin8 is high power, sorry no numbers. Also from experience, the door modules are very well built that if you put too much load on any of those pins in 32pin connector, that specific pin will trip/powerOff and behave normal once the excess load is removed without need to remove error via vagcom.
Goodluck.

hmm......... very much a cobbled-together and greatly simplified WD of J386 - hope I've gotten all the lights on the door panel

TwRunJ7.png
Just wanted to add this regarding B&O light
It is not directly wired to 20pin connector on door module but through a small 4pin or 2pin connector on the way. But you should be able to track it anyway with the wire color coding.

I must declare my experience is only with my own car but I did spend a lot of time investigating how different pins behaved because I had purchased this cheap kit off AliExpress and it required some modifications before the door module was happy with them.

@zabster : thanks for adding the clarification - the problem when creating simplified WD is the decision as to what to include and what to leave-out!!

I am actually impressed with your simplified diagram. Can't believe you went through the effort of creating a simplified version. I took ages understanding the diagrams first time I looked at them.
I wanted to clarify because I don't have the fancy B&O lights. I only have 32pin connector to disconnect when I remove door panel and I can't picture how it would be when you have B&O wired to another connector. Do you remove both 32pin and 20pin or you disconnect the connector in the way for 20pin connector.

SO Audi HQ has responded. They state that my vehicle was designed to operate without the BO lights on while driving with lights on. Only with door control unit SW larger than 300, this function has been integrated and my car has Software 0187 in the door units. I don't know what this means but can it still be resolved or I have to live with it in its current state.

Hi

Sorry I don't understand what that is supposed to mean but maybe someone else can understand this response.
You have the information above to inspect behind door panel and try rewire to a different supply pin and see what happens.

Regards

@zabster: If I can take a stab at interpreting what Audi-HQ told @ChrisdraggerS3 - I think he/she is saying that the supply voltage @ pin T20c /3 on my wiring diagram is not T58 with the SW version for his J386 module.

But yes your suggestion should work - so OP can simply turn-on the low-beam/Parking Lights and using a multi-meter check which pins in the WD have +12V. With these pins identified - then turn-off the low-beam lights and those pins which no longer have +12V are T58 pins (i.e. pins that are +12V when the low-beam (and Parking Lights) are switched-on)
