Hi, I have a 2004 A4 3.0 with a low oil pressure warning light. Ive swapped the oil pressure sender. Ive also use a manual oil pressure gauge and there is pressure ranging from about 28 psi at idle up to 60 psi at 3500 rpm. The warning light goes away when I hit about 2300 RPM (Im in a manual transmission so I just drive at a higher RPM to avoid seeing the light). So I am continuing to drive the car. I'm wondering first if these ranges are within spec. And second is there an Oil Pressure measuring block in the VCDS? I'd like to get a more accurate reading from the VCDS. And finally has anyone come across the problem and found a solution. Thanks

Hi and welcome.

Ive also use a manual oil pressure gauge and there is pressure ranging from about 28 psi at idle up to 60 psi at 3500 rpm.
Those pressures seem entirely adequate. In fact, 28 PSI at idle strikes me as fairly high. What kind of oil do you have in this engine, and what was its temperature when you took those measurements?

is there an Oil Pressure measuring block in the VCDS?
Unlikely. Cars of that vintage typically used pressure switches, not analog senders. The typical setup was a low pressure switch that the car (generally the instrument cluster) paid attention to below ~2000 RPM, and a high pressure switch that it paid attention to above ~2000 rpm. It sounds to me like you are having difficulties with the low pressure switch.

In any case, please post an Auto-Scan so people can see how the car is equipped and configured.

I Use 5w40 Liqui Moly. The warning light does not come on until the engine is fully warmed up. I'll warm up the car and do an Auto scan. Thanks.

Instrument Cluster:
MVB 001.3 Oil Pressure Switch 2
MVB 050.3 Oil Temperature (not sure if your car actually has an oil temp sensor)

ECU might also have:
MVB 134.1 Oil Temperature

You would have to check wiring diagrams to be sure, but I do think your car only has the dual oil pressure switches rather than an actual oil pressure sensor.

I have replaced the Oil Pressure Sensor a few years ago which was old and leaking oil. The engine in question is actually a replacement engine as of May 2021 and this oil pressure warning is on the replacement (used 113K miles) engine. So with the warning light on the replacement engine, I have now swapped the sensor out twice (on two separate 3.0 V6 engines). The first engine with the leak never had a pressure problem. Not sure if this helps. Also I dont understand this information.

Instrument Cluster:
MVB 001.3 Oil Pressure Switch 2
MVB 050.3 Oil Temperature (not sure if your car actually has an oil temp sensor)

ECU might also have:
MVB 134.1 Oil Temperature

I drove today on the highway for the first time with the replacement engine and the oil pressure warning light on. The warning light goes away at higher PRMs as I said earlier. The interesting thing is that the light comes back on when I am climbing a hill at high RPMs. So there is a relation between engine load and oil pressure warning light. I think the oil pressure may actually be too high rather than too low. I think you suggested this. But I can't seem to find information on the wiring diagram of the car. The other thing is that there is a forum thread on AudiZine about a bad ground on the engine. Is this Plausible?

Hi Charlie,
I doubt if the pressure switch has the ability to indicate excessive oil pressure. As Uwe has already said, you need to concentrate on the low pressure oil switch and it's wiring.
Regards HMC
EDIT
looking at the information I have, there looks to be only one oil pressure switch above the oil filter. White/Grey wire goes to cluster T32a/16 and I am presuming you only have that wire an it switches to earth via the body of the switch. It also looks like it has an oil level/oil temp sensor G266, does your bonnet switch work? You need to confirm that US wiring is the same on Erwin.

So ill look into Erwin. The Haynes Manual has the same information as yours (white/grey wire to cluster- Ground from body of switch). But according to my AutoScan, the following faults were found in address 17. Do you think the Oil Level/Temp sensor has anything to do with the oil pressure sensor? I can replace that sensor. Does this work path make sense?

3 Faults Found:
00779 - Outside Air Temp Sensor (G17)
29-10 - Short to Ground - Intermittent
00562 - Sensor for Oil Level/Temperature (G266)
27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
01304 - Radio
49-00 - No Communications

The oil temperature and oil level are in the same unit G266. That is where I would start the diagnosis.

OK So I bought a pressure sender at the Audi dealer the other day. # 038-919-081-M. I looked it up and it has a BAR of .75 - 1.05. But on the Audi web site I'm finding another sender Part number 06A-919-081 J that also fits the 2004 A4 Quattro Avant 6 Manual 3.0 01E body. So crazy. The BAR of the second sender is 1.2-1.6. What do you guys think about this. Right now I have the 06A-919-081 J (1.2-1.6).
