Hi,
I am having problems with my car (again!), I took it to our local VAG specialist who has ODIS (legit version) to have the instrument cluster changed, the original one having been fried by the previous owner, they tried but said ODIS was not communicating with the ECU so they couldn't do it (did charge me though for the work).
I went away and got a replacement ECU (second hand) and booked it in to have it changed over.
They tried again and couldn't do it with either ECU's as ODIS was unable to communicate with them, they did manage to recode my spare keys in though.
Either I've been very unlucky with ECU's, something is wrong with my car or their system is glitchy, They couldn't explain it.
Has anyone else had this problem or any ideas as to how to go forward?
Regards
Ben

I have a hard time believing what the specialist it telling you. That ODIS not communicating with ECU.
VCDS is communicating with ECU.
How did ODIS communicate with ECU to program keys?
I would think is something wrong with car not ECU.
What kinda VAG specialist with legit version of ODIS would blame ECU.
Just doesn't make sense. I'd have more faith if they said we don't know why? Cause I believe that to be the truth.
But I wouldn't go down the road of another ECU.
Good Luck

I hate to wax pedantic, but keys are programmed to to the Immobilizer (which is a virtual module in the instrument clsuter in this car), not the ECU.

hmmm.......... in a battle of pedants, I'm not sure which of us would prevail- BUT, waxing equally pedantically, I suspect you intended to say: :)

"keys are not programmed to the Immobilizer (which is a virtual module in the instrument clsuter cluster in this car), not the ECU."

Okay good enough answer for me on keys.

Why can VCDS communicate with ECU if ODIS can't?

Good Luck

Hi
They must have recognized the vin as they were able to code the two spare keys in after I replaced the chips, but just said after the second visit that they just didn't know why it was not talking. They are not a fly by night outlet as they have three branches all specializing in VAG group cars.
I tried VCDS when I got home and that communicated ok, I found out today that the VAG Eeprom programmer tool wont work on Roomsters so no getting the codes that way for a VCDS code in.
It also seems the K-Can commander line of thought is also out as that wont work either (returns wrong codes).
I did contact Skoda to ask them why it didn't communicate but no reply as yet, although I dont think they will.
With regards to the car, I dont think there is anything wrong with it if VCDS can communicate with the ECU when scanning.
